Print & Play Admagic - Damaged tokens. If I sold these to you would you be upset?

As an aspiring board game designer, having local support is an advantageous tool to have in one's…read moretoolbox. I've used several of Print & Play's services on multiple occasions: everything from purchasing various bits and bobs (meeples, tokens, etc), to printing custom cards, hex tiles, and even game boards. Apparently they even do 3D printing now, as well! Turn around time for most orders is around 48 hours, and the convenience of being able to drive up and pick up my order on a lunch break, bypassing shipping fees, is huge, and gets the components into my hands swiftly, allowing me to continue brainstorming and testing. That is, until I get a new idea, and have to print everything over again! /facepalm I would say prices are very reasonable; I've seen similar vendors online that charge the same or more, plus shipping, for the same quality of components, so I've yet to find a competitive alternative. My only negative experiences with Admagic were years ago, when two separate custom card deck orders ended up with upwards of half of the deck misprinted or improperly cut, resulting in ugly, off-center, virtually unusable cards. It took some sorting out through several (rather frustrated) emails on my part, and a discussion with the owner, Shari Spiro. Fortunately, we had serendipitously met at PAX a few years prior, and had exchanged information when we discovered we lived in the same town, and I was in the process of designing my own game. Once everything was sorted out, I was satisfied, and continue to use Print and Play's services to this day. Board game design feels like a "one-step forward, three steps back" process at times, but I'm glad to have Admagic there to help me pick up the pieces...as well as print new ones! Just be sure to check your orders for quality and accuracy.

There's a strange phenomena in the architecture world involving the anxiety of printing and…read moreplotting drawings. Somewhere between CMYK meeting RGB and dpi meeting canvas size, the painstaking process of plotting photoshop and indesign files is enough to turn any mild mannered designer into what I can only describe as a pseudo bride-zilla monster. Add in the stress of it being a 50 - 80 square foot thesis presentation poster and multiply it by about 20 students, the horror is enough to send most running in the opposite direction. Far, far away from the mob of incoherent babble about line-weight and opacity levels. Enter Ford Graphics, who not only stepped up to the plate to help my classmates and I out, but made sure our work looked as professional as any design firm in town. They put together a package for us that included test printing, plotting, mounting our posters on foamcore, and delivering them to school before our final reviews. Everything was done with the grace and professionalism one looks for when working with a company. Fast turn around and prompt replies when panicked questions were called in only added to my overall impression of the place. Tucked away deep in NW Portland, they can be a bit of a challenge to find, but well worth the search. Because for architects, the reality is that simple pieces of paper are a big deal... they hold the images of our imagination. And true shops like Ford know you can't deny that reality... or the CMYK color model it employs.

I come to ARC even if all I need is a letter-sized, black & white, résumé printed, and I would go to them for presentation posters without a second thought.

The female employee was very helpful and pleasant to work with as I spent several hours there printing off documents in color as I was putting my packet of documents together in order to get them shipped out that day. After my photo was printed the lady wrote the date on the back of the photo, as required, in gel pen, which led it to smudge terribly. I brought that to her attention that they were very particular in the application process. I don't want to wait 8 months for my application for it to come back denied because they didn't use the correct pen. The lady agreed with me and reprinted the photos. She reprinted them again and then proceeds to use another gel like pen that created the same outcome- a smudged up date on the back. I said "it's doing it again.." Bryan, the manager, was within ear shot, listening to all of this, comes over behind the counter and says "what's going on...?" Lady worker says- "the pen keeps smudging-" He takes the photos, uses an alcohol wipe to take the gel ink off and begrudgingly writes the date in a sloppy manner, leaving tiny smudges of the old ink on the photo front and around the edge of the photo. Thanks? Meanwhile I had requested them to print a color photo of a receipt, she prints in grayscale, I asked for a printed copy of my drivers license and passport together in color- she makes the copy but the two pieces of ID are overlapping each other and part of my drivers license was cut off. I simply asked them to reprint these as those would most likely be denied causing my whole application to be returned. Bryan seemed to be annoyed with providing customer service as I asked him questions about needing to sign the back of my photos just to clarify. Instead of being kind and reassuring he was snarky and said "I've done 500 of these" I know what I am doing kind of thing...then he almost throws away the old UPS envelope that I brought in. The lady said they didn't have big enough envelopes so we had to ship it in the old one... I said "we need that envelope- you don't have the right size." Bryan, gets the envelope out of the garbage can and then begins to put my documents inside. I was watching him doing it and making sure was all good. Instead of a "thanks for coming in, you are all set..." he says rudely "we are all done here....you have your tracking receipt...." I turn around and leave "okay thanks..." I'm not sure why he was so annoyed but I must have hurt his fragile male ego. I don't recommend this place, make the drive to Portland.
