A very special place…read more The building is unique, the teachers are caring and professional, and the school has a community-like vibe that I simply have never seen in a school before. It is so warm and inviting. The students have a meeting in the morning-with the whole school-and teachers and students are congratulated for their hard work as individuals and groups. This isn't just for those kids with the best grades but for kids who have made great progress or done kind acts as well. Its a very compassionate place. This is a diverse school and allows many opportunities for all kids. The wonderful field trips, extracurriculars, and interesting classes/lessons that are added in can really motivate kids. Learning to make pottery, playing the drums, or performing in school plays can give kids a neat push and help them learn to work towards their goals. The principal and vice principal are wonderful and really involved. They visit the classrooms and the kids know who they are. Students are encouraged to think critically. This is how all schools should be!

Located in the knobs is one of the most beautiful catholic church's in southern Indiana…read more St. Marys opened the new church a few years back, however the old building remains resulting in a beautiful story of faith. You can go to the St Marys website for mass schedules and parish events. Their is ample parking for those attending and handicapped parking as well. The lots are big and there are steps leading from the parking lots to the church. I would recommend dropping those with walking difficulties at the door. They have a very nice recreation area and one heck of a basketball gym. If you are ever in the knobs and need to go to mass, I highly recommend St Marys

I decided to do some driving on this long Memorial Day weekend and headed down into Southern…read moreIndiana for a little while. As I have friends in Cannelton, I opted for a quick trip through this town and became intrigued by this school building marked with a "Free School" plaque. I discovered amazing history. Originally known as "Free School," this building is now known as Myers Grade School. It was built in 1868 and is the oldest public school to be in continuous use in Indiana (and some believe the country). It continues to be used as an elementary school by Cannelton School District, though in the late 19th century it was Cannelton High School. From what I understand, it also goes by Cannelton Elementary School. Think about that. Built in 1868 and still in use as a school! Cannelton has a relatively small school district with an early learning center, an elementary school, and a junior-senior high school. The entire school system has 279 students. The school was renamed Myers Grade School after the retirement of a popular teacher - Oscar" Daddy" Myers. The school still has the original slate chalkboards, original staircases, and original woodwork. However, Myers Grade School also has computers in every classroom and internet. Since it's an active elementary school, you can't simply go in and tour it. However, it's a fascinating part of Indiana's educational history and the city of Cannelton actually has information about the school on its website.

The first and second graders put on a play by Miss Barnett on December 13th and as a grandma I've…read moreseen many plays and my own children's there and this was by far the best I have seen she really did an absolutely wonderful job teaching the children, the parents helping in Singing in and practicing their lines and their songs and just everything about it was the most precious thing I've seen and I was not having a good month of December and this made it a lot better for me I thank you mrs. Barnett and I think all the first and second graders and I hope this is shared with you you are all loved and blessed thank you so much for all you do and maybe when it gets a little warmer I would love to help you read you your sleigh!!!
