Once he took the tour of Trinity he was sold and told Mom and I there was no reason to visit St. Xavier!!! First time visiting St. X, I had heard that the St. X campus was quite impressive and indeed it is. Although I didn't have an opportunity of touring the entire campus it's easy to see that their infrastructure is massive. Very fortunate that Louisville offers a wide selection of fine schools throughout the city.

A friend and I went to the 7pm showing of "TMI: Sex Education". It was hilarious! The show is…read moregeared toward middle school students and teaching them the basics of sex education in a funny, light-hearted manner. I was hoping it would be a little more risque, but since they received a grant to use the show in schools they have to keep it clean. The show features a classroom of puppet students who are all embarrassed to be learning about sex ed. We laughed a ton as the puppet teacher made the puppets and the audience repeat different sex terms! The puppetteers did a great job with voices, timing and manipulating the puppets! The venue for the show is in the Highland Community Center on Breckenridge St. If you look at the building from the outside you will see it is an old church. It is very charming and has loads of character. When the church population dwindled they looked for tenants to help with the building costs. That's how the Squallis Puppetteers found their place. The "Hall of Puppets" has some of their VERY large puppets and is on the second story of the building, available for you to go and see/take pics with. It has some awesome puppets, including a huge Hunter S. Thompson that was part of Forecastle Festival! The music for "TMI" was done by Jim James, of My Morning Jacket. He is apparently a good friend of the puppet masters and it made the show even cooler! (MMJ also recorded a record in the same building-fyi) I asked about the Squallis Puppetteers adding a more adult-themed show and they said they have had several similar requests. I'm hoping they are able to do so because I know it would be spectacular! It's a cheap $5 way to have a few laughs and feel like a kid while watching a puppet show!

They did not accept cash so we had to scan an app with our phone and charge it to our credit card. Seemed like and excessive price to pay for a high school game. We got a seat in the bleachers and as soon as we sat down they began to blast music so loud we couldn't hear anything. They continued to blast every time one of the teams scored or there was a time out. I suppose the kids like it, but it will be our last time to attend. We've been to other schools that played music at games, but not the overkill like it was here.

Way back in the 80's (yes, the 80's, children), I was a wee high school student and I attended the…read morehallowed halls of this fine institution. The overall philosophy of the place was akin to 70's free love, communal education. We addressed our teachers by their first names. My English class was held in a room with few tables and no desks. There were sofas and floor cushions everywhere. Most of the teachers were awesome. There were a few boneheads (you know who you are). Martha Ellison and Doug Proctor were a finely tuned educational machine. They churned out many creative, balanced, independent thinkers. Once they were no longer involved with the Brown School, everything seemed to slide downhill. The new regime swung in the direction of traditional education with standardized testing driving the process. It seriously sucked. I was fortunate enough to graduate the year that this regime took power. I was also fortunate enough to reap the benefits of the patient, devoted teachers at the Brown School. Special thanks go to Lois, Karen, and Gaye. They know know why. The dream team of Martha and Doug get five stars. Today, the Brown School hardly pays homage to her roots. So, we'll settle at three stars and call it even.
