Two words... electric chargers. We were staying nearby and decided to try them for breakfast so we could get a little electric boost. This adorable B and B was quite refreshing. We had a great breakfast, virtual tour, and hike on the property. The new owners are so accommodating, we could not wait to come back and experience true mountain charm. This is a unique place to stay for a getaway in West Virginia. The Inn is located about 8 miles down a single-track, winding road, so it really feels off the grid. You look out your window at trees, forests, and ridges. The owners have created a warm, friendly environment, with many decorations that make for a rustic feel. Overall the Inn is a really nice place to stay, but here are a few things to consider: - The driveway is a lengthy (0.2-mile), gravel-covered, steep hill. We have an SUV and each time we went up the driveway our lights went on indicating unstable traction. Keep this in mind if you have a smaller vehicle or plan to go in the snowy months. - Breakfast is complimentary and dinner is provided for an additional fee ($30 per person per night and $45 on Saturdays). The food is delicious and all home-made. Ed is a fantastic chef - see many pics posted below. However, he makes a set amount of food per-person and there is no extra food. The first night we were there my wife and I had done a long hike in the afternoon and we were very hungry. Dinner was tasty but it was not enough food for us. When I asked if we could have more Ed said there was none. So consider your personal needs when thinking about meals. Since the Inn is so secluded, it is not easy to drive to a restaurant (20-30 minutes at least). - Breakfast is at 8am and dinner is at 7pm. This is a reasonable schedule for most people. My wife and I are early risers though and found ourselves up long before breakfast, so it ended up feeing like we had to wait around before starting our day (there is a coffee & tea station setup that you can go to at any time of day). Again, this will work for some people but not others. - The wifi is spotty. It's good enough to look up directions on Google maps but you can't stream a show or movie if that's your kind of thing to do on vacation. - There were a few extra charges that we didn't expect. For example, dinner Saturday night was $45 per person and Ed offered us wine with dinner (he is a sommelier and has a great selection). We were surprised to see that the wine was $15 per glass when we got our final bill at checkout. We could have asked of course, but we didn't think of it and Ed didn't mention it. read more

Great place! We just returned from our third visit! Ed and Carol outdo themselves in catering to our preferences for dining. We elected to enjoy a Sunday evening "Casual Dining" experience. My wife ordered Baked Chicken while I enjoyed Ed's Baked Salmon. The breakfasts were superb, with delightful conversation. Because this was our third visit, Ed presented us each with our own hand-carved Walking Stick. The gentleman who crafts these beautiful pieces has left us this year, he will be sorely missed. On our second and third visits we stayed in this Hide-Away Cabin. This is a stand alone detached, fully equipped rustic cabin. All the pots and pans necessary for cooking on the gas stove. Man! Is it cozy! This (not so little) place sleeps five with the huge pull-out couch. The wrap-around porch has a swing glider overlooking the mountains. The master bedroom in the cabin has a walkout screened porch. The ample supply of heavy quilts came in handy for sleeping and wrapping into for some reading. It's just a short walk to the main inn for our meals, where books, movies and music CD's are plentiful. The regulation size pool table is downstairs. What a beautiful place this is!! We came away with our walking sticks, a handmade bird house for our back yard and the memory of being off-the-grid for three days. The morning of our departure there was a light snowfall, enough to cover the ground for this pic. The roads down the mountain were just wet by the time we packed up and left. We stayed in the eagle's nest suite which had features like private 2nd floor deck with stunning view of the valley, one of a kind twisted branch chandelier over the 4-poster bed, dramatic vaulted ceiling, trophy buck mounted over the grand stone fireplace and a star-gazing arched window above the patio door. And speaking of star-gazing, the Inn's remote location offers the ultimate in nighttime viewing of the Milky Way in all it's glory! They have every mountain lodge amenity from the outdoor hot tub down to walking sticks for the hiking enthusiast. Several trails actually originate on the property and offer stunning views from the mountain ridge above the Inn. Ed and Carol are both gourmet cooks and treated us morning and night to mouth-watering meals and treats. It was worth the trip just for the food! But add to that the game room with pool table, board games, extensive reading library, beverage fridge that is always stocked, hot beverage bar, and a cookie jar that always seems to have tempting treats available - you've got pretty much anything you could want. We drove a Tesla to this mountain resort, which is quite a ways from Tesla superchargers. The provided destination charger worked well and we were on our way the next day with no issues. read more

What a fantastic getaway...and I do mean a "getaway" -- this secluded/romantic retreat is truly away from it ALL, which was exactly what my wife and I were looking for to celebrate our 22nd anniversary. We stayed in the "Eagle's Nest" room with attached balcony where we spent the night star-gazing while drinking wine that was recommended and provided by Ed. To start things off, our communication with Ed and Carol was outstanding...no more than 1/2 a day from email to response. We also signed up for the Saturday wine tasting and multi-course dinner. Ed was very accommodating to our food desires and altered the menu specially for us. The wine tasting was both educational and very tasty...I asked Ed several questions to capitalize on his experience as a wine sommelier. While Ed did mention his non-profit work in Africa following a story I told about Cambodia, he in no way "solicited" our help personally or financially like another reviewer commented...this was not an issue. My wife an I arrived early on Saturday which allowed enough time to go hiking directly behind the Inn. The hike was challenging enough to get the heart pumping, but not too difficult to enjoy. We climbed to the top of the ridge to catch a beautiful view of the valley before descending down for the wine tasting and dinner. As mentioned, the wine tasting was great and set the tone for a wonderful multi-course dinner and great conversation with Ed and the other guests. Fantastic quality all around...very delicious. We then were left to ourselves to explore the property and enjoy the night. My only complaint was the weather...super hot weekend, but it did cool off nicely in the evening. My only regret was that we could only stay one night, which was not a problem for Ed and Carol. Bottom line: We will most certainly be visiting again...this time when it gets a little cooler. read more

My wife and I went for a get-a-way weekend. Given what happened, it should have been a bust, but instead was great. It rained the entire weekend, I don't mean sprinkles, but rather that part of WV was declaimed a disaster zone owning to the amount of rain. Yet, we watched the down pour from the comfort of the lodge in complete relaxation. Braved the rain once to dash over to get a massage which both my wife and I declare to be the best we have ever had. Ed had to be away because of a death in the family, yet the food was fantastic. Ed and Carol are fantastic hosts! The cabin suites were a place my wife and I could relax and enjoy a quiet get away. The food Ed prepares is excellent and his knowledge of wine that pairs well with the meal is expert level. I was able to book a professional massage while staying at the North Fork Mountain Inn and it too was an exceptional experience. I didn't even have to leave the property for the massage. The massage therapist came to me and made things really easy. The views of nature and the mountains are best in the area. I would recommend for anyone wanting to get away to come visit the North Fork Mountain Inn. read more

AVOID! I literally spent $800+ to be solicited my entire vacation. The owner, Ed, runs an evangelical non-profit that does work in Kenya. He uses the Inn to drum up donations and free work for the non-profit. Every meal I ate, every time I sat trying to relax, even at 6am on a Sunday morning, here came Ed in a dashiki, explaining the good work his non-profit is doing for women and children. At one point, after I made clear that I just finished law school and have no money, Ed asked if I wanted to be a board member of the non-profit. NO! What I would have liked was to have been able to enjoy my post law school vacation free from Ed following me around with an invisible collection plate. Moreover, the food was overpriced, and Ed fancies himself a chef. Of the 5 meals I ate there, 2 were good, 2 mediocre and 1 inedible. The Inn gets one star for its beautiful setting and because Yelp won't allow me to give it any less. PS. Apparently this solicitation act has worked in the past. I was told a previous inn guest donated $40K. Talk about no good deed going unpunished! IT IS NOT OKAY TO HOUND GUESTS!!!!! read more

My wife and I had a very nice 5-day stay at the Inn. This place delivered for us and that certainly calls for 4 stars plus. For us, the best part was the proximity to the fabulous north fork mountain trail. Carol, the innkeeper, drove us down to the trailhead so we could do a one-way hike. There are plenty of other great outdoor opportunities around the inn as well. Carol and Ed are super nice and have made a comfortable, relaxed place. You feel welcome in any of the common areas in the inn. The Inn is just 3 hours or so from DC but is very remote. Considering your isolation, you're not going to find better food or accommodations in such a wild setting. Location is everything. We stayed in the cabin which lacked mountain views but provided us isolation and the ability to cook for ourselves. The teflon was flaking badly on the cookware and there was also a faint smell of gasoline since there is a garage below the cabin, but these are minor points to an otherwise nice place. Contrary to what other reviewers have said, we weren't crazy about the food. Don't get me wrong - we liked and appreciated it, just not as much as other reviewers or even folks we ate with at the Inn. For instance, no locally-grown, fresh food seemed to be served. That could just be a function of a lack of availability. We went to the closest grocery store in Petersburg and the selection was horrible. All-in-all, I'm really glad that the North Fork Mountain Inn is there. I'll go again and I'd recommend it to anyone, particularly if you're interested in outdoor activities. read more

This was our third trip to the inn. My husband and i came during Valentine's Day when we first started dating. We married at the inn last year and just celebrated our one year anniversary there. Ed and carol are always welcoming and attentive to our needs. Dinner and breakfast are wonderful and the wine tasting is fun! We added massages to our trip this time. They were the best we've had and will be an addition from here on out. We are very busy and have 7 kids at home, so we look forward to the quiet and rest that the cabins and suites provide. There is no Wi-Fi or cell service in the cabins or suites, but there is Wi-Fi in the inn and a number to reach Ed and Carol in case of emergencies. My husband and I look forward to spending our next anniversary at north fork. read more

This inn was so great! If you truly want to get away and get unplugged this is the place for you! We didn't have a view of the mountain from our room but it didn't matter. The inn was spectacular and our room was awesome! The food was also very good and they were so accommodating! They make you feel like family! When we got there Carol had fresh homemade cookies waiting for us and Ed was quite the chef! We will definitely be staying there again! We booked the whole inn for a midweek corporate retreat. Before we booked, when arranging meals, we asked about other restaurants in the area. Proprietress Carol told us (without arrogance) that she'd be happy to recommend other restaurants in the general region, but we'd probably find they'd deliver the best meal if we were looking for "fine dining." And she was right. Being fairly familiar with the area, I can say the two dinners we had were far beyond anything else I'd experienced in the region. But of course, dinner was a small part of the reason for 5 stars. For one thing Proprietor Ed is a master sommelier. Seriously. No really, it's true. Even though you'd be lucky to actually buy wine in a bottle smaller than your head within 50 miles of this place, and even though most restaurants in DC, Baltimore, or even Manhattan don't have an actual passed-the-test master sommelier ... here is Ed the master sommelier serving up a wine tasting just for fun. The rooms are nice, spacious, clean. I lucked into the mini-suite, and it was refreshingly uncluttered, had a fireplace, a killer loft, etc. Service was exemplary, Ed and Carol were most accommodating to any special request we had, and were consistently concerned with making sure we had everything we needed. And I'm giving a rave review to the place in spite of the fact that I was inside working for the entire stay. If I could have actually hiked the feeder trail from the Inn up to the beautiful North Fork Mountain trail, this place would probably be pushing 6 stars .... read more

Next time I want to get away from it all I'm going to North Fork Mountain Inn, again. Firstly, the location is top-notch. This is not your typical area B&B, usually located inside a small town and surrounded by other buildings - or not too far from civilization in any case. Nope, this place is tucked away in the middle of the beautiful West Virginia forests, and close to absolutely nothing. So if you want a real escape into natural beauty, this is your place. The property itself is very nice, well above average. It's actually pretty big but manages to feel cozy. Loads of character, and very nicely decorated. The rooms are in excellent condition, modern in all the right ways and rustic in all the right ways as well. All in all, a very charming place. Treat yourself to the wine-tasting session and formal(ish) dinner on Saturday nights. They know what they're doing, these owners, and they take the wine and food seriously. If you're the outdoorsy type, there are many activities they can help you plan. There is even a massage service by someone who seems to be a renowned masseur. Me, I settled for sitting on the porch and watching the sunset. Oh, a word of warning: the 'driveway' from the road to the property is a steep gravel-and-dirt road. Doable in most cars, but if you're riding a motorcycle (very common in that area) you'd better not be on a Harley. Or a sports bike. Or anything that doesn't easily do rough terrain. So in summary, five well-deserved stars. Fantastic experience. read more

We had 3 people booked into a suite for one night. I appreciated the owners waiving a two-night minimum to accommodate us; it was our only option. In fact, every interaction with the staff was very friendly, a model of hospitality. The location is remote, isolated, and especially scenic, in an area of West Virginia with multiple outdoor recreation resources. The driveway up to the lodge is not for wimpy vehicles. There is no cellphone reception, though wifi is available in the main lodge. Our suite featured a bedroom and a loft, very clean and cabin cozy, with a fireplace and jacuzzi. The layout is awkward, as the bathroom is integrated into the bedroom and there is no door for privacy. (There is an available room divider.) I slept in the loft on a foldout couch. As would be expected, the mattress wasn't the greatest. (However, the sheets were marvelous - all 3 of us raved about them.) I'm not a fussy sleeper, so I was fine, but others might want to avoid the couch - particularly at these steep prices. Breakfast was very good, and the 2 vegetarians were well fed. Leaving on a Sunday, we were invited to take as long as we wanted to check-out. Not for the budget-minded, but this inn provides a memorable experience in the heart of "wild and wonderful" West Virginia. read more

Had a relaxing time staying in the suite of this bed and breakfast. Ed and Carol are great hosts. From the breakfasts to the dinners they were amazing. You won't find a nicer place to stay or eat in West Virginia, especially one with an awesome view of the Smokehole Mountains and the river valley. The hiking trail was a lot of fun with great views at the top. If you're a wine connoisseur Ed is a Master Sommelier with a great wine selection. It was nicely located to a lot of different activities from the hiking in the Smokehole National forest, to the local cavern tours, and even a canoe trip down the river made for a wonderful time. Great views from the porch of the inn during morning coffee before breakfast so make sure you arrive a little early in the morning before breakfast to relax and take in the fresh mountain air away from any noise, traffic, or civilization. I highly recommend this place to everyone I know and can't wait to go back. read more

This is by far my favorite bed and breakfast ever. I had the pleasure of staying here twice and I would go back again in a heartbeat. Nestled in the deep woods of West Virginia, this inn gives you the get away you really want. I highly recommend the Smoke Hole room because it has a canopy bed with a private jacuzzi. There is a pool table and games downstairs, a library full of interesting books as well as a horseshoe pit. If you want to wander off from the main cabin, there is a nearby hike as well as many place to go for canoeing and white water rafting. When it comes to dinner, eat at the inn. They make wonderful food and you don't have to trek 45 minutes to Petersburg. The inn keepers were very polite and made a wonderful breakfast - they were open to my vegetarianism and planned accordingly. If you are looking for a getaway from DC, this is the place. read more

Secluded beautiful Inn! Carol and Ed are friendly. His ribs were very delicious! The room were spacious and we enjoyed the screen door to the patio. They provided robes in our room, chocolates and the toiletries were fabulous! We rode out motorcycle from Frederick and the roads are well taken care of. They provided a map of the trails leading to the overlook and water/soda's are free! Just beautiful views! The bed was not very comfortable. Too hard for my taste. I enjoy eating with the other guests and meeting new people so I would have liked to have the option to sit with other guests. The lay out does not work well for this. The fruit bowls were yummy! Overall the Inn was beautiful, the Inn Keepers were cordial and the stay was memorable! Thank you! read more

We were looking for a place to spend a night during a ride through the mountains of West Virginia and found this via an Internet search. It is definitely off the beaten path but after reading the reviews we thought we'd give it a try. There is a couple who own and run this place, Ed and Carole and the Ed is the cook. The reviews said the meals Ed served were great and the reviews were right, I would come back again just to eat. This place is way out of the way but anyone who wants to see some pretty mountains, have some peace and very quiet and enjoy some really good home cooking should give it a try.. read more

We really enjoyed our stay at North Fork Mountain Inn. We arrived on Friday evening after hiking through Seneca rocks and Spruce Knob. Our room which was very attractive . We stayed in the Seneca rock room. Friday night was casual dining and it was excellent. Saturday morning we had an very tasty breakfast which was an omelette made to order. We asked Ed if he would make us some lunch for our hike which he did even though we gave him very little notice. Lunch was delicious and the hike was wonderful.. We hiked up to North Fork Mountain following the map that was provided for us by Ed and Carol. It was well marked and we felt more than comfortable and safe.Saturday night was a gourmet dinner which again was thoroughly enjoyed by all. My husband and I went out and used the hot tub and looked at the stars which were outrageously beautiful. When we left on Sunday after a great breakfast we really felt like we had a weekend that we will remember and look forward to repeating. read more

My husband and I went to North Fork Inn for our honeymoon. It was our first BnB experience, and we are happy to say, we are now BnBers for life. Upon arriving, we saw a herd of white tail deer. The atmosphere was perfect for a couple just looking to relax. The rooms exceeded our expectations, and were all very comfortable. Carol was a fantastic inn keeper, and accommodated our needs. We found out that Ed typically cooks for the Inn and was away, but we were very impressed with the Carol's cooking. We liked the food so much, we took home several recipes. We enjoyed lounging in the main area, relaxing in the hot tub, sitting next to the fireplace, sitting out on the patio reading, and knowing that we could hike around if we wanted to. We were able to book massages, and were completely impressed by the set up for one of the most healing massages either of us have had. We have since recommended this BnB to all our friends and family. read more
