After 30 minutes of waiting with only about 8 people at the bar we decided to leave since it seemed we were never going to get service. We all come from the service industry so we understand when you're busy. But when you make eye contact with us multiple times, it's intentional. Other groups left for the same reason as well. We live in the Twin Cities and needed a peaceful place to relax that was close to good restaurants and shopping (for me) and ice fishing and cross-country skiing for both of us. I travel extensively for my job and didn't want to stay in a hotel or have to board our dog. This is our first VRBO experience and it was amazing! Ashland is a quaint town that has a wonderful Chinese restaurant! The town is located on Chequamegon Bay which we followed in our car one day and ended up in Bayfield -gorgeous! From Bayfield you can take a ferry to Madeline Island which we plan to do this summer when we return. Bayfield is a shopper's paradise with so many unique shops and boutiques. We stopped by the Apostle Islands information center and learned about touring the islands. Another adventure awaits this summer as I have never kayaked but am convinced it is the best way to experience these beautiful islands. The owners refer to the lodging as a cabin -but it is truly a home with all of the modern amenities! A huge deck was the perfect spot to sip on wine and watch birds, deer and we even saw a fox! The fireplace kept us cozy at night and honestly we had a hard time leaving to return to the hustle and bustle at home. I hope my review is helpful for people wanting privacy, a glimpse at nature and so many options for day trips to Bayfield, the Apostle Islands and even Duluth which I learned is less than an 1-1/2 hours away.

Use of the grounds, your own private dock, a row boat and paddle boat are at your disposal. Very scenic, extremely clean. I would totally suggest staying here. I am writing this review as I sit here overlooking the lake from the living room of the cabin…read morethrough the wall to wall row of windows. Every visit to Stone Hill just gets better and better! Since my last review my family has grown and now my toddlers (2 and 3 years older) are along for the week. We have spent each day fishing, going down to the beach, visiting with Helen - the amazing lady that owns Stone Hill Resort - and playing on the playground with the children. The beach and sandy entry to the lake is AWESOME for the kids and the shape and turn of the dock makes a natural swimming area that has a max depth of about 16" making it a PERFECT way to introduce the toddlers to the lake and swimming in it (while you can keep them in an area that is fairly controlled for safety). Stone Hill has a pontoon boat that you can rent for the week (well worth it and SIGNIFICANTLY cheaper than the in-town rental options). Each cabin unit comes with an aluminum fishing boat. Since I last reviewed Stone Hill they have added direct tv and wifi. It is done in a nice way with nothing rustic being taken away but instead supplemented with these additions. This is the singe BEST vacation rental option in northern Wisconsin, still a slice of old Hayward, WI Resort history and an amazing 5 star experience every time I come.

I originally hoped for a pontoon boat but they didn't have any when I booked. After checking in, a cancellation came in and we were able to get a pontoon rather than the fishing boat (which I would have been very happy with) and they couldn't have been more gracious or accommodating. I could really tell they cared that they didn't want us to be uncomfortable and were genuinely happy we could use a pontoon instead (with a shade cover in August!). They gave us such helpful information and we couldn't have had a nicer day. Unbeknownst to them i would be proposing to my girlfriend the next day, and this experience on lake Nelson simply added to this beautiful experience (she said yes!!) Next trip we'll be staying AND boating at Nelson Lake Lodge. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for a wonderful, easy, professional and in this day, remarkable, experience!

There are two rental cabins that are attached (connected) perfect for large family gatherings as each cabin has a bunk bed and another separate room with bed. Shower and bathroom, full size fridge, and a stove. There is another log cabin available but I did not see that one. Also, there is a bar with a pool table that can be rented for family gatherings as well. There is a private ramp (boat launch) and multiple docks right outside the cabins that are only 30 to 40 feet from the water. This place is magical. Come here from the city to completely unplug and unwind in this wooden paradise. I can't say enough about this place or Lou snd Colleen!
