My wife loves orchids. I have purchased from this place so many times....many times through the website. Perfect if you're busy. But, if you can come out to the shop, do it! I have been coming out to the shop for the last couple of years since I retired. The selection is so good! There are literally hundreds of plants available. And, the people here are so nice! My last two visits, a lady walked with me...showed me the diff between really healthy plants, and why they are good choices. They are so knowledgeable...lots of fun...couldn't help myself...every time I walk through here, I end up getting twice as many plants as I had intended. Today I came to get my wife a couple for Valentine's Day. I found what I wanted...then another, then another. I had five by the time I got to the check out desk!! I recently ordered two orchids described as "mature size". What I received were tiny orchids in 2" pots, with root systems much smaller than expected for something sold as mature. When I emailed the company expressing disappointment, the response I received was curt and dismissive. Rather than addressing my concern, I was told the plants were "mature enough to produce a flower" and that orchids "like to be in small pots." After receiving this reply, I googled "Norman's Orchids complaints" and discovered many similar complaints. Overall, my experience left me feeling misled as a customer. If you're considering ordering online, be aware that description of "mature size" may not match what most buyers would reasonably expect, and customer support may dismiss you altogether. read more

I purchased two orchids online. They were in bud/spike so I paid a little more. One of the orchids arrived with the spike broken off so no flowers. Highly disappointed. I emailed the support team several times with pictures but did not receive a response. My WORST EVER experience with an Orchid merchant in 50+ years of growing. Placed a sizeable mail order of "mature size" plants in May 2025. Order wasn't shipped until 5 weeks later. I was promised two blooming plants in my order but they sent non-blooming ones instead. Five of the plants I received were previously bloomed plants, some without any new growths at all (not near blooming size as the "mature size" claim suggested). And, most of these had few (if any) live roots. I retuned the 5 plants (at my own cost) and after further prodding, they issued a partial refund for the returned plants. They have offered no explanation as to why the refund was a couple hundred dollars less than what I originally paid for the plants, and have been totally unresponsive to my further inquiries.. read more

I recently did another order and want to give an update. For the two plants in my last order: The new growth for the phrag matured, tried to push out a spike but blasted. There is a new growth and I am hopeful since the roots are very good. I cut out the leaves with dots soon after I notice the new growth was growing but believe the plant was not diseased. The paph put out three leaves and some roots. I am hoping it will bloom next year. I don't think it was premium mature based on how it grew. But it is healthy regardless. Overall, after a little over a year, my conclusion is that the plants are healthy but may be slightly overstated in their level of maturity. I decided to give Norman's orchid the benefit of doubt and made another order. I did send a follow up email and asked them to send strong plants. Again, the plants were shipped very fast and packed nicely. All four plants are in very nice condition. Three paphs are in moss. It surprised me a bit since last paoh was in bark. Based on how the roots were wrapped, it seems they were imported in moss, potted and grew in the nursery before being sold. The roots are firm but no new growing tip yet. I am OK with that and repotted all three paphs to suit my growing conditions. The phal was in moss as well and is definitely mature size. The media was very wet. There are lots of roots but I had to cut out quite a few unhealthy ones. I am pretty sure it will grow well after I reported it. Overall, I think this nursery will be really good if you know how to take care of orchids in your own environment and are willing to repot and condition the plants. I also think following up with an email helped my second order. Based on my two orders, In my case, I don't have a greenhouse nor use pesticides or fertilizer. I don't think the plants would have been healthy or survive if I kept them in their original media. I hope the information helps you. Be aware! I went with my parents to check out this place. After looking around for a while, my dad picked out a plant he liked. Some of the leaves were yellow so my mom asked the women who was helping us about it (she was very friendly), she told us it was normal but went and asked the male owner as well. She assured us that it was fine. We suggested that maybe we grab a different one but they assured us that it was normal and told is it was the "better" one of the two. It was a bit dark where we were at the shop but as soon as they got it home my mom noticed a bunch of odd spots on the leaves. The next day I called and a man answered the phone. I tried to explain the situation to him and he cut me off and instantly gave me attitude and then, with attitude, he said "is this a hobby plant? How were you even able to just buy one plant? We'rea wholesaler". I explained that I didnt know but that we were able to buy a plant for $45. He continued to interrupt me and I finally said "I'm sorry but I dont appreciate the attitude I'm getting. Im just trying to ask a question and get some answers". He yelled at me and then hung up. My mom ended up callimg back. They didnt answer the phone so she left a message explaining what happened while we were there and the how the plant looked. She asked for a call back and she never recieved one. The scary thing is, they were prepping for a show this weekend. Are they going to be selling fungus filled plants to unsuspecting buyers?? I went for a visit a few days ago. Orchids were nice but the owner made me feel so taken advantage of from buying from them. She spent the whole interaction non stop commenting on how much she's discounting, how she only gets a few of these plants, rare 1 in a hundred, if you don't buy today you won't find it again next time, $425 for 10 plants is such a good deal, i only take in high end clients and movie jobs, I don't even come out here for sales normally cus I don't deal with the small stuff. I mean, she would not stop with the cliche sales tactics. The plants sell themselves. I bought the plants and left feeling so gross and now, every time I look at the plants I am reminded of the interaction. It felt much like dealing with a novice car salesman from the 90's. If the business is reading this, I wish you well and continue to support you, but hope this message can offer insights on ways your customer service can improve to make each interaction a positive and supportive one for your customers. read more

I ordered and was forced to pay for one day shipping to a location 1.5 hours away because of how their internet shipping choices worked, OK. Then they 'forgot' to ship it. I got it the next week, not a problem. Two of the orchids were badly root bound. The cattleya hybrid was so root bound I had to cut it out of the pot and found that many of the roots were dead. There was little moss left in the roots. The plant also has black spots and they've chopped off part of the leaves. I sent the attached photo to them and received this reply, "Please be advised that the grower review the pictures. The plant has healthy roots." I paid $191 for three plants that did not look as good as orchids from big box stores. Caveat emptor read more

I've ordered 12 orchids from these folks. 8 or so were fine. One was in so poor health with root rot that it died. Two or three were incorrect plants. The worst came with mealy bugs (which I did not spot until several of my existing plants were infected). I am still fighting them a year later, having lost the infected orchids.com plant and two others. With a little cajoling, I was offered purchase credit for the mistakes and mealy bug plant. However, given their questionable inventory control and the mealy bigs, I won't use the credits and no longer do business with them. read more

I buy all my orchids from Norman. I have been coming to this nursery for about a year now, and love the fragrant phals. All staff have been great and are very helpful. As for the negative reviews about Norman, I have never had a negative encounter with him. He is always friendly and makes it a point to greet me. So, not sure why people posted reviews like that, but I certainly have not had any negative experiences. I purchased a Blooming Gift 3 month orchid of the month club and I have big concerns regarding the orchid that was sent to me. The price of the orchid is very small compared with what I paid for the gift club, which was less than shipping, which was around $30.00. In addition the orchid flowers died in one week. Two weeks ago, I sent an email to orchid support. I did not receive any answer, and I sent more emails. II never got any answers. I called more than 50 times, and nobody answered or called me back. I emailed and asked if they had any healthy plants to replace this bulbophyllum that is so shriveled I think its probably not going to make it. The response I got was that it is 5 plants in one. Suggesting I should just be happy with having 5 pretty much dead plants. Im doing everything I can to revive it.. . The second part of their response says that there is no fungus on the "little fairy." It definitely has some type of disease/rotting so I'm putting it in physan to see if that can help. I bought a somewhat expensive orchid being sold as a seed-grown species plant. It bloomed shortly, and the flowers are wildly different from the shown picture as well as the species parent. It is a perfect match to a known hybrid I already have. I contacted Norman's to ask if I could exchange it for one of the others or do a return since it was not what was described, and I was told it was a normal variation (it was not) and they would not accept a return. This was my first buying experience with Norman's and unless they changed their policy on my situation, I will never be a buyer there again, nor would I recommend them to anyone else. This is one of the oldest orchid nurseries that I've ever visited. It's run by an amazing horticulturist who has decades of experience in the field. Norman has such incredible information and breeds orchids not only for aesthetics but disease resistance as well. The value can't be beer for the large selection of incredibly rare plants that would be double the cost elsewhere. His sister Jamie assists with providing incredible eye for the best plants as well as advice to keep your orchids looking beautiful. Paying over $70 for 1 orchid, I thought I would have received a premium healthy-looking plant. However, that is not the case. I found a snail inside the pot, a rot back bulb, and the whole root system was covered in green slime algae. This is my second order. My first order had a problem with mealybug, but I didn't contact them because I think I can control the mealybug. This time I can't let it slide like that. I notified the business and essentially got emails back saying that I should be grateful with what was sent. DON'T GO HERE!! Orchids and nursery are infested with mealy bugs and worst service imaginable. Even if you don't see mealy bugs on the plant you buy, every greenhouse open to the public was infested on a recent visit. Additionally when asking for help to locate something from their website orchids.com, their response was we are at lunch you can wait an hour. Better off ordering from other orchid companies that are friendly and don't have infested plants. read more

Ignore the bratty reviews and go. This place is fantastic! I've raised plants most of my life and yes this is one of the better nurseries in the LA area. They carry a wide range of orchid species and have a solid collection of pots and mounting barks. Every one there was kind and very helpful. Just when I thought plant shopping couldn't get much better, one of the gentlemen introduced their adorable Siamese kitten Georgie with my Mom and me. They also offered to take our photo in their Phal. area and shared great tips for growing types we had at home too. I'll be coming back soon. This nursery has the most diverse collection if orchids that I have ever seen for sale. It is a couple big greenhouses that you can explore and choose from. Just visiting is a fun experience on its own. Every birthday, mother's day, and a variety of different events, I go here to buy family a beautiful orchid arrangement. With so many colors, designs and sizes the options are endless. Just know they are not your cheap orchids from Home Depot or Trader Joe's so they are a bit pricey when comparing to regular flowers. However, they aren't just flowers, but a piece of living art and whoever receives them us going to love them! If you want to save some money, buy your own pot to put the orchid arrangement together on your own. In addition, the customer service here is fantastic and the owner and workers go above and beyond to give you a pleasant experience. Norman is an awful little man who happily drives away his own business. My wife and I have ordered a few orchids from their website before, but we noticed that they were always sick and infested with pests (red flag number 1-- this goes beyond the regular stress plants experience when going through the mail). Since their nursery was nearby and they had such nice pictures, we thought we'd give it one more try. We had a list of one or two orchids from their website, which we hoped we could buy in person. Bear in mind that they don't have any policy on their website for online order pick-ups, so we just went and hoped for the best. This will be important later. When we got there, the staff said that "only Norman knows" where everything is (red flag number 2-- how does an operation with twenty greenhouses and thousands of plants rely entirely on the boss's memory?). We were just going to leave and try again another day, but they said they'd see what they could do, which was very kind of them. The staff is clearly knowledgable about orchids, and they're very helpful and friendly. But they seemed to be afraid of disturbing Norman while he was preparing for some kind of "online podcast symposium." We waited while they looked for Norman. When they did find him, first he argued with his staff in Mandarin. Then he tried to fob off a completely different plant as what we actually wanted. When we let him know that this wasn't the right plant, he argued with his staff some more, then he snapped at us in English that they had twenty greenhouses and that we should have ordered online for pick-up. Then he slammed the door to the greenhouse-- yes, slammed it, like we were unwanted solicitors. The staff were very apologetic, and one reiterated their pick-up policy for us, which again, isn't written anywhere on their website. We thanked them and left. I hope it's clear that we didn't instigate a situation that merited that kind of treatment. We asked nicely, we waited when the staff told us to wait, and then all of that happened once Norman showed up. To add insult to injury, Norman's "online symposium" wasn't a big professional event-- It was a Facebook livestream, the kind that a teenager on Twitch might do while playing video games. Even if he couldn't find the time to interact with us, surely that kind of casual event wasn't worth yelling at his staff and customers? It seems to be his personal show, so evidently it was. This place is the biggest orchid game in town. If the guy at the top wasn't such a childish little Napoleon, mailing sick plants to his online customers and treating his in-person customers like dirt, we would have been glad to spend hundreds there. But now we definitely won't. read more

I have shopped Norman's orchids off/on for over 20 years. Their place in Montclair is beautiful with so many rare and exotic orchids in multiple greenhouses, some you can enter and some you cannot. I've always had great success with Norman's orchid even growing them outdoors in Yorba Linda at one time. There is allot to learn about orchids. You must have the right orchid for your conditions. If you do your homework before you go, you will pick a winner. The people at Norman's are often very busy with shipments. They are helpful but it is only fair that you know what you want and what your conditions are before you go. I think it is unfair to ask the employees to fully educate uou on so many differences genus of orchids. That being said, every orchid o have bought from Norman's always started out perfect and healthy. Have I killed a few? Oh yes, but as I learned, I have kept many more alive and thriving. My last purchase this month was a mail order. I moved further away so I thought I would take a chance and have them shipped. I was soooo happy when my order arrived! I received bigger plants than I expected, very very healthy plants. And they packed the plants do securely that they arrived in Perfect condition.
