For some reason my insurance wasn't coming up when I first came to FFEC and it took some time but…read moreeventually they figured it out. I got my examination and my prescription and that went well. They didn't have frames that I liked so I went elsewhere. No problem. My girlfriend and I noticed the woman who was helping us was being oddly passive aggressive but we ignored it and went on about our day. I find frames I like someplace else and the woman who was helping me get set up called to ask for help from someone from FFEC and whoever answered her was very rude to her, ended the call abruptly and made her cry. Not sure if it was the same person as before but I think I know the name of the person but I won't say it in case I'm wrong. Disappointed in the staff but the doctor who examined my eyes was very nice and professional.

I needed wrap-around sport frames to fight glare. I brought in the specialized frames from Sunglass Hut in Lynchburg. She guided me in the fine details needed to create the prescription glasses. She did what was previously deemed not possible. How wonderful it was to hear that they could create the glasses that I needed. The first thing one notices is that the office doesn't resemble the typical medical office. Instead of industrial carpet and uncomfortable, standard-issue chairs found in most waiting rooms, Dr. Darby's has wood floors (okay, it's laminate) and plush lounge chairs. If it weren't for the frames and sunglasses, it could be Starbuck's. In fact, one of the assistants inquired whether I'd like coffee. The affable assistants efficiently capture and update patient histories and sort through insurance benefits. They're chatty and easily engaged in conversation and banter with patients. As they say, the tone of any office is set by the boss. Dr. Darby is gracious and thorough, and takes time to listen to her patients and explain each of the tests. It's a lengthy examination, but one does not feel overwhelmed. Nor does one feel rushed as though the process for the doctor has become rote. And, mercifully, Dr. Darby does not use the unsettling puff-of-air test to screen for glaucoma. At the conclusion of the tests, Dr. Darby shares in plain terms her findings and educates patients on preventive vision care. While the eye examination could be the perfect lead-in for the hard-sale of glasses or contacts, there is no pressure to buy. If a patient wants to look at frames, fine. Want to shop elsewhere? That's okay too - they give you a copy of the prescription. No one likes being corralled like cattle and, unfortunately, many medical offices take that tact. In contrast, Dr. Darby's office takes a welcome and personal approach that makes the experience both comfortable and enjoyable. Now, if they could just get an espresso maker...

This is unprofessional and poor patient care. I need a new prescription before I can get new contacts and I am on my last pair. For them to cancel without any explanation so close to my appointment date, no option to reschedule to the next available is frustrating. I choose a frame from their office. 2 hours after the visit, I called to cancel my order because I did not like the selection. I was told I had to pay $40 in order to cancel the order. I kept the order to avoid the $40 fee. When my glasses arrived, I couldn't see any different from before I went in. So I reverted to buying over-the-counter glasses and I've been using them ever since. With medical and the VSP plan, we still had to pay $920 out of pocket. We had to pay cash before leaving her office. I regret this visit and would not recommend it. RUN FOREST RUN!!!!

I would not recommend Newman and Blackstock to my worst enemy.
