It's been hours since my visit to Prometric for a board certification exam and my heart is still…read morepounding. Anxiety and nerves aside, Prometric made my test day experience as bearable as possible. Simple to find, plenty of parking, signage outside to direct you to the entrance... easy peasy. On entry you check in with the main desk to confirm your appointment, test, and identity. I was given a quick run down of rules, details about my test (length, etc.), and directions to obtain a locker. The lockers are small and cube shaped so don't bring anything too hefty in with you. You're only allowed to bring an ID and locker key into the testing area with you anyways so you might as well leave everything in the car. Security is a priority here, cheating/attempting to cheat is simply not tolerated. You turn out your pockets, expose your shoes/socks if wearing long pants, and are wanded before allowed entry into the testing area. Sounds invasive but really only takes a few seconds. You're allowed wedding jewelry and glasses (which will go through a quick once over). Inside the testing area you have your own cubicle area with computer and noise-cancelling headphones. The headphones were a welcome addition... the woman next to me was physically manifesting her stress...constantly adjusting and flopping down in her chair, sighing, leaning against the cubicle wall. Before long though, the test was over and I was back at the main desk. The staff who were somewhat stoic to begin, softened when handing me my congratulatory letter (my particular exam provided results right after testing). The two employees present during my time there were professional and accommodating. Accommodating in that they answered all of my questions and ushered me through the entire process (as much as they are allowed to for standardized testing). I would not hesitate to schedule another exam here in the future if needed... but hopefully not too soon!!

I want to add to my review now that they have responded. My experience was so terrible with them…read morethat I was asked and joined a paid DOH oversight board to prevent this experience from happening to anyone else. They screwed up paperwork, created false paperwork and were misleading when Doh investigates them. They were written up several times due to what they did to our family and causing one of my daughters to have PTSD over a speech assessment exam that I requested. They lied and told DCYF that I would lock my kids in their rooms and leave the house and go out. Im the last person that would do that and they even had the Nerve to say someone was at my house that was never at my home and I have ring cameras and internal security cameras and can prove it. Early intervention is the worst here. If I could sue them 1000x over I would for what they did to our children and our family. These are not professionals. From the top down in early intervention there are problems there. So many errors. So many false reports and they never fired the people despite getting written up by doh on over 6 items. My family is fine now

Since I apparently will have to be dealing with these people for four years, I hope they get their…read moreact together. Their payment system is not bad to use, but they recently displayed a discomforting level of incompetence (and what I thought was sleaziness, but I may have overreacted). First, I get an e-mail telling me there is a bill ready for my daughter, but at the wrong college (Wellesley - she is not going to Wellesley). I sent a note saying she is not at Wellesley. I get a "corrected" e-mail telling me there is a bill ready for my daughter, this time at the right college, but the wrong name! (Olivia - her name is not Olivia.) Finally, I get a generic e-mail telling me to log in to my account. I log in (in early September), only to discover that in mid-August they had added a "returned payment fine" of $25 for a problem I had with their system back in early July. Did they tell me in July that there was going to be a fine? No. Why did they wait over a month to add the fine? Did they tell me when they added the fine? No. They just tacked it on to a bill for other (legitimate) expenses, and only told me about it when it was due. (Turns out the university added the fine, not them.) Originally 2 stars. I have asked them to take off the $25 fine. If they do, I will upgrade them to 3 stars. Update: they were quickly responsive to my request, explained that the university, not them, added the $25 charge, and said they would ask the university to waive the $25 charge. Overall, a pretty good response. I am bumping them up to 3 stars.

Several years back, my sister came up with one of her very best ideas. "Your brother and I don't…read morereally need anything," she said to me. "As much as I like getting your gifts, let's stop exchanging them. Instead I think we should find a charity that buys presents for children and contribute to them." Such a simple yet brilliant idea, and I'm ashamed that I did not think of it first. So, after moving to Rhode Island, I found the Gingerbread Express, run by NEARI. They collect requests from families of disadvantaged children in the Providence school system. As a donor, you can request to be assigned a child (or two or three) starting in mid-October. You are given a Gingerbread man with a little (very little) information about a child. Then you purchase and wrap all gifts, and deliver them to the NEARI office with the tag(s) provided by them securely attached to the gifts. The staff there calls the parent/parents and they come collect the gifts. If the parent chooses to do so, he or she can wait to put the gifts under the tree on the night of the 24th, and so Santa comes to even the poorest of homes in Providence. I imagine the excitement and joy from the little ones that still believe in Santa, and the relief and smiles of the grownups. I only wish I could be a fly on the wall to witness the event myself. I know only the name of one wonderful elf, Valerie Staples, who organizes all these assignments. Kudos to her; I bet she really enjoys her job at this time of year!
