I have experienced depression and anxiety for most of my adult life. I've had appointments with psychiatrists and non-mental health physicians who have prescribed every type of antidepressantand anti-anciety medication available, sometimes as a stand-alone medication other times in combination with other meds. I've never had more than very slight improvement with symptoms. I just about gave up, but I found Erica, a mental health nurse practitioner who listened to my personal history and medication failures. I saw Dr marasa because I suffer with treatment resistant depression with suicidal ideation amongst other things like autism and ocd. Not only did they want to make sure they talked to my treating psych to get permission from him in order for them to treat me. This took them almost a month of them wasting my time of them trying to get ahold of him but i understand why and I also talked to him and he agreed to it so I was happy to have them talk to eachother even tho Dr marasa told me I was a good candidate for the treatment the first day I spoke with her on the phone . She then proceeded to make me wait weeks to have her get permission from my doctor only to then tell me I would not benefit from being treated there but I would benefit from more therapy ( I go twice a week now) . This is going to be a long detailed review, but we'll deserved. My wife suffered from severe depression amongst a host of other issues. We had been through an array of psychiatrists to no avail. Living in the Tahoe area we are limited to options. Initially we made contact with another psychiatrist in the Sacramento area and that psychiatrist suggested the option of ECT, reluctant at first we explored any documentation on ECT that we could find on the internet. After reading as much as we could on the topic, we decided to give ECT a try. Being completely transparent, honestly we were at the end of our rope, quite frankly we had no other options. We had tried every possible combination of medication and weren't getting the results we had hoped for. Following the lead from the other psychiatrist we started receiving ECT from the Nor-cal neuro-stimulation group. Naturally I had concerns and after speaking to Dr Marasa at the actual clinic that the procedure was being performed I was put at ease. Additionally, I paid attention to the room itself. I have a medical background having been a X-ray Technician, I have worked in hospital environments, worked in various ER's, Operating Rooms, and back offices for various Orthopedic Surgeons. Back to observing the room the ECT was being performed in I took special care to notice their updated crash cart , meaning if anything could go wrong they had the necessary items in the room if needed. I would like to say that cart was never needed, but comforting to know. Next, I visited with the Anesthesiologists prior to the procedure, from talking with them I soon realized these doctors are very accomplished and know what they are doing. What I'm trying to say is this, the room that the ECT is performed in is a very professional and updated with the latest equipment. Now going forward to the actual treatment itself. We were told not to expect miracles at first and it may take some time. After my wife's 3rd treatment it was ground breaking. On our way back to Tahoe after treatment, my wife became a different person, all for the good. She was talkative, wanting to schedule getting her hair done, wanting an appointment to get her nails done, wanting to update her wardrobe and so on. Honestly I didn't know who was in the car with me, I was delighted. As we were told prior to starting ECT that ECT may be an ongoing thing to maintain the base line that I was seeing on our drive back to Tahoe. We'll... that was true in our case, but seeing the spark in my wife gave me hope. We continued ECT treatments for some time, tapering off as time went on allowing my wife to go less often and maintaing the base line we were ultimately trying to achieve! Dr. Lauren Marasa and Dr. Voronina have been wonderful to work with. These women have changed our lives through ECT. If you have tried all your options, I would not hesitate giving Nor-cal Neurostimulation a try, we did and have no regrets at all. Psychiatry at its BEST. Dr Voronina is a gifted Dr. who always explains my conditions in such a way that makes sense. She is an effective diagnostician and prescriber of the necessary and best medications. she is an excellent teacher teacher of methods for coping and improving my mental health. I am living my happiest life now because of addressing my mental health issues. I drive for almost two hours from where I live for some appointments and also can have virtual appointments.
