    Court #3

My son plays for a basketball league and it's our first time playing here. There's 3 courts on the right when you walk in and there's 2 courts on the left. There's plenty of metal bleachers to sit on for the spectators and players. Their score boards on the walls doesn't work but they have the portable ones that they use. They have a restroom for women & men. The restroom was dirty and it smelled like urine. Another downfall here is there's no AC so it was hot even though they have all the doors propped open. They have big fans that couldn't push out enough air. They have a lot of parking spaces which was good.

COMPLETE GUIDE to their 1-week Summer Basketball Camp. The website doesn't list the daily timeframe for the camp, kind of annoying bordering on disorganized & unprofessional, but I made a simple phone call during hours of operation, and an employee was able to provide the info: 9am - noon. Costing $110, this worked out to be just under $7.50 / hour. The facility is huge & very clean (particularly the restrooms which were fully stocked & immaculate!). Their business is newer (3 years old or so), and fully updated with the latest n greatest as well as plenty of parking. They sell Gatorade ($2 for a small bottle) and water ($1 for a small Crystal Geyser), so you might wanna bring your own drinks, but nice if you forget. They also have a separate little cafe area with vending machines, tables & chairs, and small sales counter for freezies & other food items. There are bleachers for parents to watch games. The daily routine was, surprisingly, well-organized with each day having a slight change or addition of a new skill / drill. They have a short break where a small snack is provided (granola bar, rice crispy treat, etc.), and the kids can rest awhile. They end the day with a couple of scrimmage games to try implementing what they've learned. Children at this particular camp ranged from 3rd grade to 8th grade (couldn't find the official age limits or acceptable grade range posted anywhere on their website). For parents with the younger kiddos: they ALL play together (and every big kid isn't exactly nice, just fyi). I mean, during a game this one older kid (a girl) repeatedly "stole" the ball from the little ones by just coming from behind and reaching over their heads!! Seriously?? If that was my small child, I'd GO OFF!! Everyone PAID to learn & play, so even the little ones should have an opportunity to try out their new skills!! Coaches & staff were all really nice, knowledgeable, and great at engaging even the least athletic kids in attendance. Some coaches appeared quite young, like high school-age, haha, but I asked (yes, totally nosy!) and they're actually mid 20's and now assisting coaches of high school teams. So far, mid way through our week of camp, he's had fun and there have been no major issues. A couple of same-aged girls teasing (which is normal), and one slightly older, aggressive girl scratched his face "accidentally" as well as smacked him pretty good on his neck / back area (evidenced by a large red mark), then with a few seconds left on the scrimmage game clock, she literally held his arms down so he couldn't shoot the ball!!! Guess they don't call fouls AT ALL, according to my son. So it was kind of a supervised free for all, at times. Some of the boys (including mine) asked for more scrimmage game time since they only play for the last 15 - 20 minutes of each day, and 3 kids on each team had to sit out / sub in.... they were told that "scrimmages are a privilege" and only if everyone listens throughout the day. Uumm, it's not a privilege if we've PAID for it! Further, we have no control over whether other children listen, behave, or otherwise engage, so yeah that was weird. Overall (so far), we would attend this camp again, and I'd recommend it to others as well as the business itself (they offer tons of other activities for adults).

Prior to Covid they had $5 drop in gym. As of 2024, I don't believe they have drop in anymore...or at least their website isn't updated

This is a nice basketball court if you are looking for that. It is very expensive. I went here for a team builder which was fun

Personally, we enjoyed this park more as it was paved and had more amenities, such as exercise equipment and children's play spaces. It could definitely use more culture and zhuzh as there were many spots where a bit of design (such as a mural) would have improved the vibe. But that being said, it wasn't too bad for a mid-sized neighborhood park. Our favorite areas were the small overlook with stone bench and the bridge that connected back to the trail towards Lakes. Sadly, like Lakes, some of the trails that lead down from the bridge were a bit washed out so we didn't get explore as much as we would have liked but all in all we much enjoyed getting some steps in and would definitely come back - but perhaps on a day where it's not raining.

These two parks are often confused as one park, but they actually intercept each other. This is an excellent place to bring the kiddies as there is a pretty large play structure in tow. There's also a huge grassy field that's perfect for picnicking and other recreational activities. The walking paths are all paved and lead to other trails within nearby Hidden Lakes Park. There's tons of picnic space and each picnic area can be reserved for special events. You'll find a good amount of exercise equipment near a few of the walking paths. Parking is easy and there are clean restrooms on site. This is the perfect spot for a leisurely stroll or a light run. The large grassy field space is also very desirable for dog owners. I immediately noticed how clean this park was as soon as I arrived. They definitely do an excellent job of cleaning and maintaining this area. I'd say that this is one of the better local parks in the area.

Their tennis courts and basket ball courts are all clean and well lit. Who ever does the landscaping does an excellent job also. I have never seen anyone here before, but I like it and am proud it's a part of Martinez. Sorry I cant make the association of Martinez to Ol' Cappy Ricks, because I would really like to know also.

Through his public service, he made a significant impact on developing the city of Martinez. He served on the city council for 16 years and he was the president of the Martinez Real Estate Board. This park was dedicated to him by his son. On the Arreba Street side of the park is a plaque, but it isn't about Cappy Ricks. The plaque tells the story of the Christian Brothers' Winery and how from 1879 - 1932, a 70 acre parcel of land, including this park land was owned by the Christian Brothers Religious Teaching Order, founded by Saint John Baptist De La Salle. According to Wikipedia, De La Salle is credited with establishing a regime of education which emphasized the good student, banning corporal punishment from their institutions. The plaque goes on to say, "It was on this property that the brothers constructed their novitiate, the De La Salle Institute, and founded what was to become one of California's most famous wineries."
