Unfortunately, it isn't shaded but the Vallejo weather was beautiful. It is $6 cash per vehicle to enter and park. The reserved area was next to a top notch soccer field, playgrounds, and the restrooms. Minus one star for their restrooms because they didn't have toilet paper or soap. Thankfully my friend came prepared with a huge bottle of sanitizer and toilet paper but I feel that the gorgeous park and grounds deserve clean restrooms with the necessities. The grass is well kept and the park was very clean otherwise. There were several trash cans but no recycling bins.

But I think it has potential for a special event such as a kid's birthday party or bbq. It's low key and as mentioned by other yelpers, very clean. Parking is a cinch and the trees and rolling landscape keep the park cool. The playground is for ages 5-12, but my 2yr old handled it fine. The bbq area is close to the playground so even if you have one parent/guardian on kid watch, they don't have to be too far from the food. The basketball court is also next to the bbq area. So no matter your interest the family sticks close together. Only downfall, not sure if there are bathrooms though.

In my son's backpack, I found a flier announcing the preservation of the City Park down on Louisiana and Sacramento. Come to find out, this park has been around since 1868 and is one of the oldest city parks in the Western United States. I used to live in this 'hood and this is one of two parks on LA that's nice to hang out and share a sack lunch with family and/or friends. The flier details extravagant plans for a 5-day build that will happen April 29 - May 3, 2009. The new park promises to have such cool things as a rock wall, tunnels, climbing walls, tree forts, bridges, and the traditional swings and monkey bars. Plus a whole lot more!! How EXCITING! Now that my son is getting older, I dont have much time, if any, to take advantage of it. But how wonderful for the up and coming kids of our community. No longer will we have to trek to BANISHA to the "cooler" parks they do tend to have. The best part about it is that all of us have an opportunity to be a part of it! You can vpay a small fee to have your name on the fence, volunteer your time, or your cash to help make it happen! For more details: http://www.preservecitypark.org/

The playground is shaped like a boat with sea creature sculptures, making you feel like you're surrounded by water. There is also a sandy area for kids to build sand castles. During the day, I usually see a lot of students walking and running around the park. I like to go there in the evening to enjoy the sunset and breeze. I also see a many people walking their dogs to the park. This is a great place to enjoy if you live on Mare Island. Be careful in the summer though! There are a lot of mosquitos.

When you push the button for the water area a set of sprinkles will shoot water up in some random pattern for kids to run around in. The water area seems like it's suited for toddlers, but even older kids really like it and will crowd you out if you're not careful, it's playground rules after all. The city is pretty good about keeping the park clean and fixing broken equipment, which they better be since local residents are paying monthly maintenance fees. :) I come here all the time with my son and we never see anything too jarring as far as trash goes and even if the equipment is dirty, it's usually cleaned up by the next time we visit. There's also a set of 4 picnic tables under a gazebo type structure, along with a few other tables and bbq grills around the playgrounds. Thankfully there are also some trees lined up close to the playgrounds and these provide some shade for parents in case the picnic tables are too far to keep an eye on the little ones. A short distance from the playgrounds there is a half court for basketball and a small skateboarding area. To be honest it looks like this area is not totally finished. I would pack some extra clothes in case your little one decides to get wet on a hot summer day :)
