Me and the missus went there on Valentines Day, just to get a little something to eat and celebrate.
It is not a fancy place, just nicely done up, and simple design, the staff were friendly, and made us feel welcome, I don't think it was run entirely by Japanese staff or at all, as the waitress seemed to be speaking Chinese, and they do have quite a few Chinese dishes on the menu, although the chef might have been Japanese.
They have a very extensive menu, which includes some Japanese classics such as Teriyaki and Gyoza Dishes. They also have a Sushi Bar, but we have yet to try this out, so look out for another review on that.
The real plus is that you can bring your own booze if you like, so that is what we did, a box of wine, and it was nice to be able to do that, as not many places will allow you to without a small fee being added to your bill. Anyway we made sure we got merry.
Now onto the real business, THE FOOD, I ordered as a starter, a Oregano Chicken at £4.00 and a Chill Chicken Ramen for my main at £5.85. The missus ordered a Chicken Gyoza at £3.90 and a Chicken Kare Lomen at £7.25 for her main, £21.00 total.
We were given the choice of whether we wanted our starter and main together or one after the other, we chose the latter. Our food did not take long to come, mine arrived first, the portion was really great, I was surprised, but maybe should not have been, seeing as the starters are really side dishes. As I tucked in, the moist juicy flavours ran down the side of my mouth and I licked it off with passion and ecstasy (only joking) back to the review, the dish was very tasty and I could really taste the oregano without it being overly powerful, it had a nice crispy batter and was very flavoursome. The missus enjoyed her dish, and I had a few bites, as it was the first time trying Goyza I was really taken back how similar it was to other types of dumplings but very flavoursome inside.
Now the mains, when the waitress brought the first dish out, which was the Kare Lomen, I thought it was mine, as it was soup based, with noddles in it, we were expecting the other dish to be just noodle based, anyway there's me tucking in, and I tell you, I wish it was mine, because it was so tasty, I could not believe it when she brought out another dish that was soup based, and I found out it was mine, I found it hard to give up the dish, don't get me wrong my dish was superb, but it was no match for a Kare Lomen (um) I can see why the price was high for it. Both dishes were of epic portions and were filled with chicken and noodles and veg, plus Tofu in the case of the Kare Lomen.
In the end we were both stuffed, and as it was closing time the staff seemed relaxed about us just sitting there for a while sipping our wine.
One gripe, the toilets are outside of the building, at the back, but there is an outside eating area, which would be nice in the summer.
Highly recommended, could give it five stars, but have not tried the Sushi yet and seen if service is consistent, get yourself down here.
