I had to remind them what my order was once. Then they made it wrong (hot instead of iced). When I told them I asked for ice, they literally dumped out 1/3 of the cup, and put the remaining 2/3 in a cup of ice for a nice, watery lukewarm adventure. I had just moved into the area and was looking for a cafe to go to for a regular visit. Nomads Cafe was the first the showed up on my search. When I first came in I enjoyed the atmosphere of it. The workers were really nice with good customer service. Since I was unsure what to get they were helpful on having me make the right choice. Their cappuccinos and mochas are a good recommendation. A downfall to the place is that it is an internet cafe so you will find regulars there for hours on their laptops. So dont bother trying to enjoy your coffee unless you do it at the tables outside or to go. If you are lucky enough to get a table, hope that it has an outlet. Overall its a decent cafe to grab a quicl coffee to go. read more

Great corner cafe to grab a quick breakfast or linger and enjoy the morning with coffee. I took my veggie bagel breakfast sando to go and it was fantastic, just what I needed to turn a rough morning around. Lots of people were hanging out and using the wifi. ok, well anyone who can afford to shop at whole foods or farmer's markets can afford nomad cafe. this is a beautiful sunny little spot in an otherwise rather sketchy stretch of shattuck. christopher is dedicated to our community, their goods are dedicated to our environment, this is a place to support. the fact that you're encouraged to bring your own cup is a practice that should be followed by other coffee shops. i love nomad. read more

Can you say SLLLOOOWWW? Love that they have sandwhiches and organic fair trade coffee but getting service here is for a day when you have no plans. I called the other day in advance to have a bagel and a sandwich made so I wouldn't have to wait. After a few minutes on the phone discussing the order, I was told they did not have the ingredients. I then order something else and was told they really didn't take phone orders. Why spend 10 minutes talking to me on the phone to decide you couldn't take a phone order. I bet someone was waiting in line for 10 minutes while they were denying my request. The price also does not fit the neighborhood. Way to expensive. The staff seem unclean, possibly high but have good taste in music. read more

Coming to the Nomad Cafe as a recent transplant to South Berkeley/North Oakland from Berkeley. I've been here several times and I'm hooked--love the thai iced tea, vietnamese iced coffee, lovely atmosphere (nice and quiet with gorgeous windows!), oh--and a ban mih sandwich that rocks my world. I've also ordered the mediterranean plate and it was delicious. This place is only a few blocks from my house, offers wifi, and I've never had trouble finding a seat. Love it :) read more

I really like this little spot. Yummy and affordable foods with generous portions, plus a nice selection of local treats and teas. The seating is somewhat limited, so you've got to come at just the right time to get a table, but once you do you're set! Location is also great, and it's nice to walk through the nursery next door if you're having writer's block. read more

The bagels are so fresh and doughy I love them. I also enjoy that they have plenty of vegetarian options and friendly service. I wish they had bike parking though I had to use Ron's bike parking across the street I'd rather have my bike closer. Nomad is okay. A bit better than just okay. But prices are a bit high, no outlets to plug in dying laptops, and they close pretty early on weeknights now (8PM, I think) which sucks cause I like to study late. I like the ambiance though and the people that work there are nice. They have live music pretty regularly on the weekends and a welcoming, laid-back environment. read more

The coffee here is dependable. They make a decent cappuccino, not as good as Blue Bottle & Sub Rosa, but way better than the crap that passes as coffee at Jumping Java. As for those who complain about the electric outlets, I don't get it. I go to this place for the consistent quality of their coffee, and not for free power or wifi. Cafes are cafes and should be judged by their COFFEE and not whether they are willing to dole out free power & wifi to campers/squatters. This place is also very good for the neighborhood. North Oakland needs more clean and quiet places like Nomad Cafe. read more

It's true. The tenor of the Nomad Cafe has really changed, with the change of ownership. It's quieter, less of a scene, even a bit abandoned feeling. The employess behind the counter are friendly, but seem bored and unhappy with their jobs. The outlets are covered up to discourage laptop use, which does not seem to be having a positive effect on actually having customers in the cafe. The new wood tables and chairs are nice. The metal outdoor style tables and chairs in the old Nomad were always really austere and uncomfortable to me. That's the one change that does make the cafe feel more inviting. This place has shifted from being a hipster mecca with high quality espresso drinks, to a low key somewhat generic corner cafe. read more

OK, Nomad. I actually wrote a review in April and I have to change it now. It's amazing what a good staff turnover can do. I now have to go there so that I can see my favorite neighborhood baristas who are nice and personable and if you are nice too and come back, they give you the "regular" hook ups. The decor has changed again and the coffee is different than it used to be- I think better. There is one guy in particular who is always funny and charming to all the ladies and he keeps it entertaining and light without being annoying and creepy. A skilled at the art of people barista! I value that while I am waking up. OH and they changed those horrible eco friendly melt in hot drinks straws that I abhor. Thank you Nomad! read more

Nomad Cafe is my favorite cafe in Oakland to work remotely! It is family owned and operated and they are all incredibly warm and welcoming. A bunch of regular workers come to the cafe and create a nice, quiet, and friendly community. The atmosphere is simple, non-pretentious, and sunny. Easy neighborhood parking and bike racks in the area. Good coffee and yummy, fairly priced food... also their fridge is stocked with just about every single brand of kombucha. read more

This place is the BEST! My classmate and I want to personally thank Nomad Cafe for giving us a stellar Saturday study spot that has been essential in helping us graduate from our Masters program. I have nothing but amazing things to say about the food, staff, and coffee here! The staff here are the sweetest and they always make an effort to remember customer names and offer free coffee refills on the house. The food is delicious- I recommend the tofu bahn mi (vietnamese sandwich), the mediterranean snack plate (tons of fresh veggies and hummus), or the veggie bagel. I used to really enjoy Nomad Cafe. However, an experience my father and I had there yesterday prompted me to write my very first Yelp review (and to never go there again). Here's what went down: My father and I stopped in to get a drink and to look something up online. When we had already paid for our drinks, the staff told us that live music would be starting in a 1/2 hour. We explained that we were only planning to stay for 15-20 min. and that we were going to do some quick online research. We went to sit down and another woman said, in an unwelcoming voice, "We're turning the internet off right now." We responded by saying that we only needed to get online for a few minutes to look something up and that we would soon leave. My father's computer can't hold a charge, so we needed an outlet. I searched around (with power cord in hand -- as the staff could clearly see) and soon learned that all of the outlets in the cafe had been sealed. I hadn't seen any notices about this, so I asked the staff what happened. The woman at the counter said that it was a "management decision." I then asked if I could use the outlet in the bathroom for a minute or so in order to plug the computer in and quickly get some information (driving directions) online. The woman responded, "No, that outlet was covered, too." At this point I asked, "Is there any way we can plug this computer in for a couple of minutes to look something important up?" She said, "No." No further explanations or apologies. They obviously have power outlets behind the counter -- and she could see the perplexed and worried looks on our faces (and knew we weren't interested in camping out at their place all evening) -- and she just turned away. Needless to say, my father and I quickly downed our drinks and left. We were disheartened by Nomad Cafe's complete lack of hospitality. We live in the neighborhood and won't be back again. Such a shame that such a welcoming, warm and lively place has changed so much. read more

I have to give this place four stars for their reasonable prices and their yummy wide selection of espresso drinks and pastries. I love their little glasses and how they serve hot mochas in a little bowl-mug thing. They've added more seating in the shop, and continue to play some eclectic jams on the stereo, as always. I just tried their peanut butter smoothie with an add-shot.... the bomb. Liked their orange cranberry cake too! They have also had some great live music at the shop in the evenings and also sell beer and wine! read more

Nomad Cafe is a neighborhood staple. They have great coffee (if you don't get it to-go they give you heated mugs which are amazing), and a wide variety of pastries and dishes to choose from. The staff is friendly and welcoming, and always remembers my order. They've worked hard to create a community cafe, and it's working quite well! read more
