    Cappy's Boxing Gym

My experience at Cappy's was humiliating. Alex, the owner, had an issue with another boxer because…read moreshe believed he was homophobic. Because I trained with him, she apparently told people at the gym that I was also homophobic and disrespectful. When I arrived, people were giving me dirty looks. Alex confronted me and accused me of talking badly about Cappy's on Facebook. When I asked for proof, her screenshots only showed the other boxer tagging me in posts. She then admitted that I had not said anything. Instead of apologizing and correcting the misinformation, she allowed everyone to continue treating me with hostility. I even felt pressured to disclose that I have a transgender girlfriend just to prove I was not homophobic. I should never have needed to reveal personal information to defend myself against something I did not do. I came to train, not to be publicly judged and humiliated based on someone else's opinions. In my experience, this was handled unprofessionally and without accountability.

Alex, the owner of Cappy's, had an issue with one of the boxers because she believed he was…read morehomophobic. I signed up for sparring, and that boxer trains with me. I simply train with everyone--I do not involve myself in other people's personal opinions. When I walked into the gym, I immediately noticed everyone giving me dirty looks. Apparently, Alex had already given a presentation to everybody portraying me as homophobic and disrespectful toward the gym. Think about how disturbing that is: the owner of a boxing gym publicly turned an entire room against me before even asking me what happened or checking whether the accusation was true. I smiled and shook her hand because I was excited to be there. She responded with hostile energy, stepping up to me as if she wanted to pull up on me. I was shocked and confused. She accused me of talking shit about Cappy's Gym on Facebook, so I asked her to show me exactly what I had done. She pulled up screenshots--and all they showed was the other boxer tagging me in pictures from Cappy's posts. She then admitted that I had not actually said anything. That should have ended with an immediate apology. She should have told everyone in the gym that she was wrong for portraying me that way. Instead, she allowed the poison, hostility, and hatred she had created among the gymgoers toward me to continue flowing. I was left standing in a gym full of people who had already been encouraged to judge me for something I never said or did. The most humiliating part was that I felt forced to disclose that I have a transgender girlfriend before she would "accept me." Basically, at Cappy's, you apparently have to prove that you are not homophobic--even when you did absolutely nothing--simply because the owner decided that you were. I did not deserve any of that. In my experience, Alex was egotistical, hostile, and completely unwilling to take accountability after admitting that the accusation against me was unsupported. Owning a gym does not give someone the right to damage a person's reputation, turn an entire group against them, confront them aggressively, and then refuse to correct the situation after discovering the truth. She appears to have bought the gym with her parents' money after only two years of boxing experience. Money may buy a gym, but it does not automatically buy maturity, leadership, experience, or accountability. What happened to me was not professional conflict resolution. It felt like public humiliation, social poisoning, and an abuse of authority by the person responsible for making the gym safe and welcoming.

After attending Wudang academy for over a year I can confidently say that I was in the best shape…read moreof my life! My flexibility dramatically improved but also overall body connection/fitness. The chronic pain in my knee completely resolved. If you want to live a long, happy, and healthy life this is the secret! They have many different classes/styles of martial arts that can be practiced, and the masters are amazing at helping you choose the best style to fit your goals. If I had more time I would study as many styles as possible. During my time there I practiced Baguzahang (Circular Boxing), Taijiquan (Tai Chi), and Qigong. A memory that particularly stands out to me was a student who had come from New York just to study at the academy. He told me that he originally heard about it after climbing the Wudang mountain in China looking for a master to train him in the original Wudang Sword Style. He was able to find a master, but the man told him to come to Seattle, WA and study at Wudang academy. This demonstrates the authenticity to their teachings which draw direct lineage to the old masters of Chinese Kung Fu. I originally attended the academy several years ago, before my life became extremely busy and I moved to Chicago. I plan to move back to the area some day and Wudang academy is at the top of my list for activities to prioritize. If I have kids someday, I plan on taking them to the academy. I hope that in the future I will be able to make time to attend again. If my review piques your interest, please attend, and learn more in person. I am a humble student and am no doubt not fully representing the amazing nature of this academy so please go check it out for yourself! -Steven

I've been training at Wudang Kungfu for the past 3 years so far. If you are looking for a place…read morewhere you can train forms AND application, within the same gym, this is the best place in Seattle to do it. I have explored lots of different martial arts gyms in the greater Seattle area, and lots of them have different things to offer. However, it was difficult to find traditional Chinese gungfu that is rooted in the culture and practice of Chinese martial arts that also teaches real, effective, full contact application. This is the place to do it! Lu Laoshi and Chang Laoshi are both incredibly knowledgeable, but also down to earth and humble. They really know their stuff, through the historical lineage and practice. There are many amazing non-Chinese instructors of the Chinese martial arts, but I personally appreciate that both head instructors are ethnically and culturally Chinese while also being attuned to western culture and the norms of western students. This is not a school with Japanese style belt progression, or a very hierarchical student culture. Both Instructor Lu and Instructor Chang expect students to think critically for themselves, and for the instruction to make sense because it works, not just because "they say so." If you approach it with an open mind, there is much to learn at this school, no matter your training goals. Chang Laoshi has many years fighting in the ring, testing his application skills in ring fighting, to complement his deep understanding of the traditional forms, and Lu Laoshi has a rich knowledge of traditional Chinese medicine in addition to her martial arts practice. Whether you want to learn internal martial arts for demonstration, cultivate qigong, learn about the culture and history of Chinese martial arts, or spar and compete in sanda full contact ring fighting, this is a place where you can do some or all of those things. There are many places in Seattle where you can learn traditional Chinese gungfu, and internal martial arts. There are also many places that will teach you full contact grappling and striking, for muay thai/BJJ/MMA etc. However, if you are trying to learn both of these dimensions of the martial arts and not just one or the other, this is in my opinion the best place in Seattle for it. You can learn forms, qigong, application, open hand, and weapons, all under one roof and with two deeply qualified instructors. There are places that are probably more "affordable" if you are just looking for the cheapest place to train and get a workout, but in this case, I think the expertise and thoroughness of instruction is more than justified, especially considering the generosity of both instructors when it comes to time and answering questions after official class hours.

The Long Version (TLDR @ bottom):…read more I've been a member for six years, but it's really improved over the past few years. I am in my mid-thirties with a disability that has me in chronic pain, but I feel so much better on days I work out that it has become an absolute must for me to be at the SACdt. My mood is better, I'm getting strong, and my health is improving, but most importantly, I just feel my best on days I work out. 1.5 years ago, I was in a wheelchair after major hip/back surgeries and weak as a baby, but through hard work, personal training, water aerobics, and dedication, I am walking, in the gym 5-6 times a week, and STRONG. Machinery: They have older (more typical gym stuff) all over the gym, but they also have this crazy apparatus (that is new in the past year) that takes up the entire front room and it is awesome! They are pretty consistent (I've been a member for 6 years) in upgrading the cardio machines, so there are really good selections between the old-school stuff and the newest machines (everything has been spread out for COVID so you have to really tour the whole place to find what you like). There are multiple classrooms for different classes, including cycling and pilates. Pool: I use the pool (which is saline) multiple days a week. It is five lanes and only one person per lane (that you schedule via the app or phone--I really hope they keep this after COVID because it's awesome not having to guess if a pool lane is open). They have a disability chair to get in and out, which was clutch after surgery. Normally, there are a bunch of pool accessories (fins, paddle boards), but they are limited right now because of COVID. The water aerobics class with Kelly is awesome for all ages and she helps me customize half the exercises. Locker-Room (Female side): The locker-room just reopened (after a year of being closed for COVID). Normally, they have a sauna room, jacuzzi, and steam-room but I don't know if those have reopened; otherwise, it's just lockers, bathrooms, and showers. The locker-room facilities are definitely older, but they have everything you need (including a bathing-suit spinner, hair dryers, flat-irons, and q-tips). COVID safety: This is going to sound cheesy, but it's true: I feel safer at the gym than I do at the doctor's office based on how well SACdt is keeping it clean. From the start, SACdt implemented thorough rules for keeping members safe at the gym, but their cleaning team is keeping it sterilized! They have an app to pick specific times to come in, there are limitations to five people per room in each session, in-between sessions their house-cleaning team cleans every machine and apparatus, they are checking temps at the front desk, and everyone is wearing masks. Personal Trainer: Lisa is AMAZING. I feel so ENERGIZED on days I work out! What do I mean by energized? You know the term "runner's high" that no one except runners seems to know---well, I am fairly certain this is what they mean (or as close as I'll ever get to it, because I am no runner). I'm pretty sure they do trial passes so you can try before you buy. ---------------------------------------- TLDR: - Personal training at SAC has changed my quality of life - SACdt has everything: Pool, squash courts, indoor track, mini climbing machine, basketball, body-composition machines, personal trainers, water aerobics, massages, boxing room---it is the most full-service gym I have ever been to. - COVID safe: Everything is cleaned each hour; Everyone is wearing masks; They did something cool to the HVAC system (no pun intended).

This is a nice gym with friendly staff with lots of amenities. There's a large variety of equipment…read moreand classes so it's tough to get bored here. The facility itself is older but it feels like it's well maintained and very clean. I really like that I can reserve a pool lane ahead of time so I don't have to wait for a lane. The classes are all very approachable with helpful instructors and I felt this way even about classes I was trying for the first time. I also appreciate that the gym has a lounge area with wifi that's good enough to take a work meeting on if you need to, and I've taken meetings there so I can have enough time to get a workout in before/after a busy day.
