I cannot say enough amazing things about Marieke Gouda! We stop here 3-5 times every summer on our…read moreway back from visiting my mother-in-law, and it's great for both adults and children. The cheese selections are incredible, and they always have a bunch of samples out so you can taste before you commit. The Truffle Gouda is my all-time favorite, with the reserve coming in at a close second place! Everywhere you look, there's food! The employees are friendly, and the service is quick. My kids always get ice cream when we are here, and they have to go visit the cows. There's a playground, a giant jumping pillow, and a track for tricycles. We've never eaten here, but we've taken meals to go plenty of times. We are never disappointed. The restaurant is always busy, and the atmosphere is always full of energy.

The waitress wasn't overly friendly, but whatever; the worst part was not being given straws for huge glasses of soda, or utensils. The best part was the appetizer of deep fried mushrooms. The avocado chicken caesar salad was so-so, it was just that the chicken, cucumbers, croutons, etc., were bland and the caesar dressing was like pale ranch dressing (which was just super odd). The classic burger had a thin, dried out patty. We would not bother to stop again.

The Butcher Shop is a local gem that I nominate to receive a world heritage site designation. If…read moreyou've read my other reviews, you might note that I have a verifiable "thing" about old-school establishments and The Butcher Shop for me ticks all the old school boxes: glass cases displaying all on offer; butchering table a bit behind glass cases where meats are cut by these Rembrandts of protein; and succulent meats. Proper butchers greet you upon entering this Wisconsin shrine to meat and prepare to magnificent perfection the exact cut of meat you order. On this my first trip and after recovering my senses having been wowed by this little shop hidden in the woods, my particular friend and brother Bunky and I ordered porterhouse steaks (1 1/2" thick), 1"-thick boneless ribeye for the kids and for another day 1 1/2" center loin, boneless pork chops, and strips of double smoked bacon for the rotkohl to be served with pork chops. All meats will of course be grilled, steaks for 7 minutes on each side to yield charred, medium rare steaks. Oh, let me not forget to mention the smoked salmon that is so tasty and served as our biscuit for making the journey between lake cabin and The Butcher Shop. My particular friend and brother, Bunky enjoys a nearby lakeside cabin and will return as will I when next in Wisconsin. Oh, I will return, I will return and urge all who read this note to beat a direct path to the butcher shop whenever you find yourself in Wisconsin!

Some of the staff here, my first time in, were a bit rude and dismissive, but every time since has been really warm, welcoming, and nice even from those same exact people. I think number one is two things but both equally the most important. You'd expect a local butcher to be quite expensive but the prices here are only about 1 dollar more than the grocery stores in the area. The other thing, also which you'd expect but would be correct in this case, is the quality of meat being WAY BETTER. This is some of the best meat I've ever cooked with and just tastes, smells, and looks so much better. I always come in for more ground beef and end up coming out with a bit more (usually at least some jerky). Truly a great place! The really amazing thing is that you can see and smell - not just taste - the difference. Store bought ground beef is so greasy and seeps out that nasty thick brownish liquid when cooking it, this doesn't, it also has a smell, this doesn't smell like anything but meat. Really great!
