My back is always going to do this. I can't do anything. I'm not going to be able to do the things I love." Bouldering is a huge part of my life, so when my back would flare up I would immediately worry that I would not be able to climb anymore or that I would always have to be careful with what I did. The biggest thing that changed for me was the educational side of the program and changing the way I thought about pain. I started to understand my body better and stopped seeing pain as an automatic sign that I needed to stop everything or that something was seriously wrong. I feel a lot more confident in my body now and I have a much better understanding of how to keep moving and doing the things I love. For me this was not just about doing workouts. It was really a lifestyle change and a mindset change in how I move, how I think about pain and how I take care of my body long term.

This time was completely different thanks to Dr. Jason. From the start, his evaluation was thorough and professional. Instead of just treating the symptoms, he took the time to identify the actual cause of my injury -- hamstring weakness and imbalance I didn't even know I had. He gave me a targeted set of exercises to address it, and I was pain-free within a week. I'm so thankful I found him. Dr. Jason is incredibly knowledgeable, and you walk away from every session having actually learned something about your own body -- not just told what to do. If you're dealing with an injury and want to get back to an active lifestyle quickly, I can't recommend him enough!

Right from the start, Todd was extremely prompt with his communication and we were scheduled for a free assessment within a couple of days. He even set me up with a week-long pass to the gym Todd used the assessment to understand my physical state, my flexibility, movement issues, etc by having me do a couple of reps of a host of exercises. At the end of the session, we discussed what a training plan would look like. What I really liked about his training program was that he was willing to work around my constraints. I wanted to work with a trainer just once a week and he was willing to give me structure homework routines to do on my own on the other days. He also used MyFitnessPal to keep a track of diet and make suggestions. After the session, he was great about following up and answering any questions that I had. Overall, I had a great experience with Todd and I would highly recommend considering him if you're in the market for a personal trainer.

I found this gym 5 years ago (then known as Arena Ready) and I've been consistently going 3-4x/week during that whole time. The motto "just show up" rings true as that's all you need to do. Once you arrive the coaches lead you through a directed warmup (to prevent injury) and workout. I can't thank these guys enough for the great gym they run, and how chill they are. They aren't super intense caricatures of CrossFit people. Coach Alex especially, who has been my coach most often, is such an incredible teacher and dude. He has a keen eye and makes sure that people are showing good form, and the gym is overall great about offering "scaling" options - basically stepping down the workout for wherever you're at. Learned a ton about form and feel much more confidence in myself around strength training. I felt and sometimes looked different after even just 1 class. I like to drink a protein shake either before or right after to minimize sore muscles. I never thought I'd become a CrossFit person - I just started going because it was 2 mins from my house - but here I am hooked! Thanks FCCF!

But a couple of things that can make it much easier is finding the right fitness program and and immersing yourself in a supportive community. This is essentially what I've found at City CrossFit. Throw out the notion that CrossFit is for crazy, intense, ultra-fit people. what you see on tv is not what you see in real life. Do you have time to work out 2-3 times a day, get massages a few times a week all while keeping your eating in check? I don't! What you'll find at City CrossFit are every day people who enjoy self-improvement and value health. You don't need to be in tip top shape to start. Everything is scalable and appropriate for all fitness levels. Sean, the coach and owner, is approachable, knowledgable, nice, and will never let you do anything beyond your ability. Come to City CrossFit as you are and the workouts will always be tailored to what you can do and adjusted as you become stronger and more mobile. You have to start from somewhere, and this is truly a judgement-free zone! You know that "honeymoon" phase where you're totally dedicated and into it for a few weeks? After a while your persistence started to drop off. then before you know it, your dedication is just gone and you're just paying the monthly fee while you sit on the couch telling yourself, "Hmmm, I really should go workout out." That didn't happen to me at City CrossFit. This is the first fitness program where I've never contemplated, dreaded or regretted coming to workout. The workouts are always varied, challenging in different ways. I am never bored! Sure some of the workouts can be tough. Sure, there will be days when I wake up sore. But doing it in the company of others and feeding off the collective energy and camaraderie not only gets you through it but pushes you to do your best. Nearly six months in and I'm the strongest I've ever been. I've been moving through life a lot more effortlessly. Running to catch the muni with my 3 year old in arms or just hoisting him around the house has come with much more ease. The fact that my arms are starting to look amazing is a bonus! Hands down, this has been one of the best investments I've made for myself. I'm not going to lie. CrossFit isn't cheap, but City CrossFit is one of the most affordable in the city. You get out what you put in. So don't expect any major results if you're only going once a week. Besides, if you're budget-minded like me, your return on investment only goes up as your cost per session goes down. READ: the more often you go, the more it's worth it for your pocket and your health! Money can buy you whatever fitness program you want. But what City Crossfit will give you is a safe, supervised atmosphere to help you achieve your health goals, a fun-loving community to help motivate you, and a great fitness program that will keep you on your toes!

I really wanted to love this gym since it's convenient and is a small business. However being a…read moremember has proved to be disappointing and I ultimately left this gym. Here are the main issues I had- -It's very cramped and can therefore get busy fast. -The cardio area in the front doesn't have enough air circulation or purification. However purification and circulation are a problem everywhere there. -Members regularly show up sneezing, coughing, and with runny noses. -The gym is unattended most of the time, and when staff are present they're glued to devices. The gym's own basic rules just go unenforced. -The equipment is regularly dirty and sweaty. The vast majority of members do not wipe off equipment after they have used it (much less before they use it.) And staff absolutely does not pick up the slack and clean off sweaty machines or provide even gentle reminders to members, in real time. Feels gross and makes it too easy to pick up colds, flu, Covid etc. -If you accidentally forget your water bottle you'll be totally out of luck! They only provide a bubbler- no cups. -There is not composting or recycling throughout the facility. Only the two cans by the entrance offer sustainable options. -Using their platform was difficult both from a cell phone and via the Safari browser. Like most other people in the Bay I'm an iPhone user so this proved to be inconvenient. -They milked me for another month when it was time to cancel. Their cancellation process is not straightforward and bought and you can be charged an entire month's membership, even if you cancel several days before the regular day your dues always deduct. It's a common feeling that if you cancel before your monthly renewal date, you should not be charged on the next renewal date. So to me it seems like their cancellation process is confusing and also is poor business practice, plain and simple. Really the only major perk here was that I could walk here. Ultimately this business might benefit from some local competition. I really don't recommend this gym and hope for Bernal's sake that they make some serious changes.
