I started training with Ben in January of 2018. My weight hovered around 153 for years and I am 6ft tall. Pants and shirts have always been ill fitting and I had been taking weight gainer for years without much result. I also suffer from some injuries: a weak rotator cuff and weaker knees injured from years ago with poor squatting. Ben came recommended to me by friends and so I signed up. Ben helped me develop discipline and confidence where I didn't have any. Our first hurdle was teaching me good form. He would help me figure out the best way for my body to comfortably execute an exercise, taking into account my past injuries and familiarity with certain machines. Mobility exercises were a huge part of my success - learning to warm up and effectively stretch really made me much more successful in the gym, unsurprisingly. One thing that I didn't anticipate is how people would take notice. I am no stranger to the selfie, but I started to get friends messaging me, telling me how they'd see me getting bigger and stronger. How I finally began to put on muscle, fill out a pant, etc. Some people I really respected started to tell me I was their fitness motivation. For the scrawny kid inside, this was an unbelievable achievement to see others see in me what I never thought I could achieve. Other exciting achievements: being able to do multiple reps and sets of pull-ups and dips with my own body weight where those were absolutely an impossibility before. I became obsessed with squatting. The appearance of pecs where I had none. While the list of physical changes can go on and on, I think the most important change was within myself and my own outlook. I am far more motivated than I ever was. I look forward to planning my gym time between training sessions. I look forward to practicing and reporting back. I feel elated about my progress and I am so pleased with Ben's work with me. My diet and fitness are on track and I can't recommend him more!

I've been working out with Ben for over a year now. I've had really good results - gained muscle and dropped 5% body fat. He's also been really good about tailoring our workouts to specific goals and needs: getting ready for soccer season, improving my vertical jump, improving balance and flexibility. He's always on me for my flexibility. He's knowledgeable, motivating, and most importantly, hella fun. My workouts are equal parts laughs and grunts, silliness and sweat. The drawbacks? His bubble butt is distracting.

Diakadi's trainers go through a rigorous interview process and looking around every time I go people are working out in a way that supports long term health and fitness, vs the way group fitness pushes you but often at the expense of injury. From the moment you walk in, it's clear this place is different. It's small, welcoming, and gloriously low-key -- the kind of gym where peeps actually smile at you !! Daiya, the owner (and yes, it's 100% women-owned, which is worth a cheer right there ), has thought of everything: clean space, great lighting, fantastic music, and the best vibe in the Castro. I took a Total Reset class -- six people max, five that day -- and it honestly felt like personal training disguised as group fitness. Daiya is laser-focused on form, super encouraging, and just when you think you can't do another rep, she makes you believe you can. It's that perfect mix of safe and "oh my god, my legs are on fire." The gym may be small, but it's mighty: spotless equipment, top-tier sound system, and views of Market Street where you can watch cute dogs trot by while you question your life choices mid-plank. She also makes it a point to welcome everyone -- all sizes, levels, genders, and orientations. It's the most inclusive fitness environment I've ever been in. The only drawback? No showers. Love Steps and can't wait to try Lit! But what I've really been enjoying lately are the yoga classes. The best thing about small yoga classes are the extras. You'll probably rarely get a shavasana assist or a bit of reiki thrown into a restorative class if you take a big yoga studio class. And another good thing about small group classes, the instructor has a better chance of knowing your limitations and your strengths and have the ability to find the right things to push you beyond what you thought was your ability.
