I've been living in the northwest 290 area for more than 20 years now. My husband is from…read moreSoutheast Asia, and he loves to eat typical Asian food every now and then. We used to have to go out of our way to find Asian goodies, like sticky rice, or green papayas to make the Laos famous papaya salad. Now we find everything we need at Saigon Asian Market on 529. When we first saw the name of this place, we were very excited to come see what was inside. To our surprise, we discovered not only groceries but also freshly prepared cooked meals and delicious Vietnamese desserts. As soon as you walk in, you can smell the delicious spices and the aroma of the fresh soups and different hot dishes they serve. Every time I come by the store; I usually go for a few things but always end up getting way more than I went in for. They have fresh spring rolls, Vietnamese desserts such as banana tapioca pudding, fruit cocktails with different toppings such as leechee jelly, and also, the 3-color dessert that's made of 3 layers like red beans, yellow mung beans and green jelly. They also have a large produce section where you can find bok choy, Napa cabbage and Chinese broccoli to name a few. They have tons of canned goods and all kinds of spice sauces or condiments like soy sauce, sriracha sauce and hoisin sauce. If you are craving fresh coconut water, you can also find it here as they have fresh coconuts. The owners of this place are extremely friendly. When I come here and they are out of spring rolls they immediately tell me to wait five minutes, and they make fresh spring rolls for me. I really enjoy shopping here. The place is very clean; it smells delicious and the prices are very affordable. They have everything we need from noodle soups to rice paper wrappers so we can make our own fresh spring rolls at home. Also, they have some tables and chairs, so you can sit there and eat their cooked food. As I mentioned before, we used to drive quiet far to buy Asian groceries, to China town on Bellaire, H-Mart in Katy or 99 ranch market on I-10. Having Saigon Asian market near us has made our lives so much easier. It's so convenient because we can make a quick trip without having to drive far from home. Even when we just crave a few spring rolls for lunch, it's nice to be able to stop by and grab some. The parking lot is also a big plus as it's very spacious and I never struggle to find a parking spot. Since Saigon Asian Market opened near us, it's become a part of our daily routine. Its convenience has made life simpler, whether we need groceries for dinner or just grab prepared food during lunch, it's only a short drive away. Having a place like that close to home really makes a difference. I really hope they keep up the good work and stay in business for a long time.

I bought several trays from Saigon Asian Market. One tray cost $40 and had a dead insect inside. I…read morewas so terrified that I threw the whole tray away and forgot to take a picture. Another tray cost $70 and also contained a dead bug. This time, I took a photo of the food with the bug and sent it to Mr. Mai, who claims to be the owner of Saigon Asian Market. Instead of apologizing and reassuring me that he would check with the kitchen to ensure cleaner food preparation, he texted me back in a rude, disrespectful manner, accusing me of trying to cause trouble for his store. He bragged that his business is incredibly popular with plenty of customers, clearly implying that he couldn't care less about a few individual customers. Despite clear evidence of unsanitary cooking conditions, he denied it and turned the blame on me, claiming I was just picking a fight. I texted him to let him know that their unsanitary food poses a public health risk, and that I would be reporting the business to the health department and the consumer protection agency with the clear evidence I have. Only then did he get scared and sent me a $70 refund via Zelle for the tray with the dead bug (the one I photographed). It is such a shame because Ms. Thuỷ, the cook, is always very cheerful and polite, and young Quý is incredibly respectful and well-mannered. (Ms. Thuỷ was off on the day I ordered these trays and she didn't cook them.) However, the owner's behavior proves that he is an irresponsible person who has zero respect for customers. He runs an unsanitary business but refuses to take accountability. After refunding the contaminated tray which I took picture, he acted like he did me a favor and implied that I was making a big deal out of nothing. Poor food hygiene is bad enough, but treating a food safety issue like a minor inconvenience and blaming the customer is completely unacceptable. Save yourself the health risk and stay far away from this place!

Finally ventured inside H Mart today and I'm so glad I did. I was searching for vegetables. I…read morecouldn't read a thing :-). First let me give kudos to a young lady that worked in the Face Shop. She was absolutely delightful and informative. I purchased a facial cream that I can't wait to try and repurchase. The prices were unbelievably low. What a variety of Asian foods and products. Tried going through the website last night to take pictures to make it easier to shop but that didn't work. Located a tea for $5 in the store and 4 times higher online plus shipping. Sadly didn't locate the Vietnamese coffee that I wanted. The store was clean, displays were plentiful. Next trip, I plan to visit the pharmacy and bakery. This will definitely become my go to grocery store. Thanks for a wonderful introduction.

But the more I look, the more I want to buy. So I grabbed some salmon scraps (great for fish soup), stinky tofu in a jar and some snacks. I like this Hmart better than any of those in Houston, San Jose and Honolulu that I've been to. It's cleaner and has good ventilation. I can hardly smell food vendors cooking and kimchi's. Since it's dinner time and Lunar New Year's Eve, instead of rushing home, I stopped by the food vendor inside of the store.

It's close to Costco and H-Mart, and near H-Mart you'll also find Paris Baguette and Tous Les Jours. There's an 85°C nearby as well and with Costco right next door, you could easily spend half a day hopping between all these places. On weekends, traffic can be pretty crazy and parking isn't easy since everyone shops then. However, if you come on a weekday especially outside of lunchtime--it's much easier to find a parking spot. Inside 99 Ranch, there's a food court with options like San dong noodles, dim sum, stir-fry dishes, and Chinese barbecue. On the other side of the plaza, there are also several restaurants, including Korean spots and Vietnamese crawfish places. As for the store itself, there are always clearance items near the Kung Fu Tea area, which we usually check out before heading in to shop for fruits, produce, vegetables--pretty much everything. I found my favorite Japanese soy milk but this was banana flavored. Way too sweet for me and it was $4/carton. It's a large store and they offer a loyalty program. If it's your first time visiting 99 Ranch, you could easily spend an hour just roaming the aisles. There's so much to see--it almost feels like a little field trip every time we go.
