There are already so many reviews, so just some notes: 1) Make your way around the current dump (also a Nassau County gem, seriously) and drive slowly. 2) Parking is tricky at certain times of the day and on weekends. Make sure to come before 9:30 on beautiful days, or else you'll be parking far, far away. More steps, If you really want them I guess. 3) Wear your sunscreen! Skin cancer is no joke, and it's pretty bright up top with not a lot of coverage if you walk around to the lake. 4) Beware...No lights in the bathroom and really not the best place to use the loo. There however is a shopping center close by... 5) Look out of all sorts of critters from birds to bugs.. including ticks.

The mates were pretty helpful in putting the bait on the hooks and they measured each catch to see if they were big enough to keep. The only negative I would say is there is no prior instruction on safety, no clue where the life preservers were located and we could barely hear the captain over the PA. And if you get seasick, as a dozen of us did, dramamine doesn't help and 5 hours on the boat is too long!!

Just a half mile off of Jones Beach we came upon Endurance and her calf and for the next 3.5 hours observed them flipping, diving, blowing, breeching, and all the things wales do. Captain's dog Sophia alerted us every time the whales were about to surface. We even got to smell that lucious whale breath! Our marine biologist tour guide was great as well - she walked around and told us all about the whales and their behaviors. This is my at least 6th whatle watch (Alaska, P-town, Iceland, etc) but by far the most entertaining. We also enjoyed a spectacular sunset as well as a nearly-full sturgeon moon rise. On a quiet day, you can see fish literally jumping out of the water.. how cool is that?! It seems to be quite the interesting park, with activity randomly converging from all directions. You have folks pulling over for a short respite, bikers emerging out of the nearby trail, the occasional lay fisherman near the bridge and boaters loading or unloading for the day. We spent a half day on the Fantasy III boat fishing for fluke. We started the day at 7:30 and…read morefinished by 3pm. You bring your own food and beer, and eat whenever you want. The skip drives the boat out of Freeport into the ocean about 3-4 miles before he tells us to drop our lines. Depending on where the fish are, the skip may move to another area with more fish. Fishing gear and bait are provided. You drop your line to the bottom of the ocean and wait. Besides fluke, you can catch see bass and sea robins. My friend caught an eel when we were above a reef. When the day is sunny, wear shorts, a t-shirt, hat and bring sunscreen. If you get seasick, take Dramamine, otherwise you'd be sick and waste your time on the boat. I've never done this before and I'll definitely come back!
