I like an adventure, so I looked for a coffee shop in Zarautz and found Native. Arrived to find it was inside a market where it was bustling! Went to the counter to order to discover the barista is from Chicago. Random! We chatted as I waited for my coffee, which was excellent. The people of Zarautz should be stoked to have such a great coffee shop here. Can't imagine I'll ever be in the position to be in this part of the world again. Too bad.

While in San Sebastian, I searched high and low for a heladeria with turron ice cream. All of the…read moreice cream shops we visited had vanilla, chocolate, hazelnut: all of your standard flavors. But no turron. Who would have thought it was so difficult? Finally, during one of my post-dinner strolls, we found La Veneziana. There was a queue formed inside of the shop, but a peek close to the ice cream case indicated that there was turron ice cream to be had! The two youngsters working behind the counter ensured that the line kept moving and in a few minutes' time, I had a turron and chocolate ice cream cone. Not only were the prices much better than the ice cream shops located along the route that most people choose to take their evening walk, but the ice cream had much more flavor than some of the more "commercial" shops near the old part of San Sebastian. The chocolate ice cream was richer and creamier than the more subtle turron, but it was good to be satisfied with such a post-pintxos find.
