I respectfully disagree with the review posted by Mi B. That possibly could have been her recollection of her experience, but my experience with this dentist office was completely the opposite. After going to a DC dental clinic for over 8 years that offered poor customer service and even worse dental plans and procedures, I was fed up. Desperate to switch my dentist office, I had no recommendations and my insurance was limited to certain DC practices. I wanted a suitable dentist office that offered excellent customer service and a dentist passionate about helping maintain my teeth. That's just what I got when I called National Light Dental with Mohammed Nkutu Kirunda, DDS. I was offered an appointment the very next week to have a consultation for a damaged tooth. I was ecstatic and relieved to find a dentist to resolve my dental problems. For peace of mind I googled Dr. Kirunda and searched his credentials since I'd not been seen by him before. I was impressed with what I read, and I was even more impressed with the professionalism and attentiveness of the front office receptionist who booked my appointment. 2 days prior to my appointment, I received a text message confirming my appointment, which I found comforting. Although I was about 10 min late and Dr. Kirunda reminded me the importance of being on time, I personally did not feel "scolded" as mentioned by a previous review; rather, I was impressed that he wanted to ensure I could ask questions and have my concerns addressed. During my consultation, Dr. Kirunda advised that I get a root canal of a molar tooth and a crown. He evaluated adjacent teeth and found that my previous dentist neglected to say that root canals they did also needed crowns. X-rays taken by Dr. Kirunda's assistant showed that the root canaled teeth were ill-fitting. Dr. Kirunda explained that he would fix all of these problems. The very next week Dr. Kirunda performed a root canal and fit me for a crown on that tooth and on two adjacent teeth. I experienced minimal pain and discomfort. I was so grateful to have found a dentist who cares about my health. Two weeks later the crowns were delivered and the receptionist booked an appointment to finish the procedure. That appointment went so smoothly and without pain! I left the office happy that I would be able to enjoy the holiday season without pain. I truly believe that I've found the right dental practice to meet my needs. I've already told a number of people about the exceptional level of care I received from Dr. Kirunda. read more

Dr. Kirundu- is an excellent Dentist. I'd recommend him and his staff to my friends and family without hesitation. Dr. Kirundu put me at ease performing root canals without pain all. I really appreciate how professional the staff was, I got started at my scheduled appointment time and finished at an ideal time. I have follow up appointments with him and I have changed my daughter Dentist to him. Went for a cleaning and some sensitivity problems and this doctor, immediately said that I would need to have a root canal and possibly another one because of this sensitivity. I was shocked, and went for a second opinion, where my new doctor said that was not necessary at all, and years later I have no root canals and my sensitivity problems are under control. I am never going back to this doctor and would advice people to be careful with his "professional advice". read more

This dentist took over an existing one call National Light Dental. They took over all the businesses clients, and kept the receptionist, but seemingly changed their customer service approach (for the worst) and many other business practices like their hours of operation; customers like me were also not notified of any of these changes, which would have been a simple courtesy. (Side note, they misrepresent their hours on Yelp. They actually close at 12pm on Fridays, and not 3pm.) But back to the real purpose of this review; the business is under new management and has gone from average to piss poor. Their customer service is a 0, especially as it relates to their main receptionist, Cynthia. Their one and only dentist lacks acumen and patience with kids, and neglected to even give my youngest son (3 years) a real check up simply because he was afraid of a large man, coming at him with a noisy moving toothbrush. In the latest (and last) incident of unprofessionalism by Cynthia and staff, I was badgered for being 10 minutes late to a 2 hour appointment, even when I called 25 minutes prior to advise them of several lane closures and construction on surrounding blocks. I tried my best to be proactive and respectful of their time, by driving in early and keeping them abreast of my traffic and parking woes, but to no avail. Cynthia attempted to scold me by saying that I "should be appreciative of them for extending their hours for me today" and "be on time next time." (Mind you my appointment was at 11:30am, I arrived at 11:39am and they supposedly close at 3pm, according to Yelp.) I went back and forth with her for a few rounds, but in the end I decided to walk out and take my business with me. I have a family of 4 and we have been patronizing this dentist for about 2 years. The lesson for me is that a good dentist is hard to find in this city. The lesson for them should be that a lack of customer service and professional costs. I also didn't like the dentists aggressive/costly approach to dental care. His first reaction to my tooth sensitivity was to schedule 2 root canals, drill into a free other teeth, and then do invisalign thereafter. I've since visited another great establishment, who thinks my same issue can be remedied simply by redoing old fillings. The moral of this whole story is steer clear of this unprofessional subpar dental establishment. read more

I was referred to Dr. Kirunda by another dentist, Dr. Ki, who perfomed a surgical procedure on my gum bone inside of my mouth. After that procedure, I needed a good dentist unlike the one I had previous before my mouth surgery. I met Dr. Kirunda and his staff during the month of May of 2018. My first appointment went very well and his staff were very courteous to me. Dr. Kirunda took time and patience with me as well as making sure that I was comfortable during each procedure. The Kirunda did a extremely thorough exam on my mouth with full x-rays. My former dentist just targeted what they saw as a problem in my mouth and took care of those issues without performing a thorough exam of my whole mouth as Dr. Kirunda did. With that being said, not Dr. Kirunda, he and his dental assistant staff were detailed, efficient and knowledgeable with great courtesy to me as a patient. I soon found out after my thorough exam and full mouth x-rays that my teeth were in great need of attention to include a deep cleaning, several fillings, root canals, caps and a fitting for a lower partial. All of my procedures have been concluded and now I am just waiting for my partial to come and to be fitted in my lower mouth to embrace my new smile. Dr. Kirunda is an amazing dentist. He knows his work and he is very thorough and has a great personality, which I feel is very important. I am recommending Dr. Kirunda to all my friends. Dr. Kirunda is one of the finest dentists in all of D.C. He did what my other dentist wouldn't do -- Dr. Kirunda flawlessly gave me 4 new crowns and a root canal. His front desk staff is HIGHLY professional and courteous. Dr. Kirunda gave me peace of mind after I had issues with my teeth hurting for months. He repaired a rotted tooth that my other dentist ignored. My mouth feels brand new! I'm so thankful for Dr. Kirunda. Mi B's review is completely unfair and dishonest. From her review, you can tell that she showed up late with a bratty 3-yr-old that she couldn't control and then she got her feelings hurt when the dentist asked her nicely to be on time. This is the worst dentist I ever been to in my entire life smh. I mean I literally only went there for a crown build up and a permanent crown. Let me start by saying thr staff are not friendly at all. They barely speak and does not introduce themselves so you can know who you are working with. My initial visit was 6/21/18 for the build up and temp crown. I was given a pair of protective shades they took a couple of X-rays and went straight to work without telling me the process of what they was doing and why. I don't know about others but I like to know what's being done every step of the way. I had what they call a hot tooth so it was extremely sensitive so you would think after 3 shots of numming meds to give me something stronger. Welp not them it took about 7 shots before they gave me stronger meds smh. Finally he was able to work on the tooth a hot mess. I kept seeing a strange substance being put in my mouth constantly throughout the whole process never was explained what it was unit after. To only find out I was bleeding out and it was meds to stop it keep in mind I have high blood pressure so if I'm bleeding extremely I should know. This dentist also dropped a sharp tool in my mouth during the procedure thank God for the suction thing or it would have been down my throat. I had no choice but to go back to get the perm on 7/11/18 which I horribly regret. I was like in my head this is simple remove the temp glue the perm and minor adjustments. Let's just say I was a bit wrong the dentist went in to do the adjustment which was not feeling right so I advised as I should have. I kept telling him over and over it's not right and tried to advise of what needs to be done to correct the issue. He completely ignored me. I asked him to allow me to see the mirror as I sit up to see if the adjustment felt better he got pissed as if I can't tell him something wrong with the work he did on my mouth. He walked out and said take as long as you need while I go see other patients. I'm saying in my head how dare u to stop working on me because I am telling you that u not adjusting the crown correctly. When he came back in the room I nicely said I am a patient and I deserve to be treated right. I also advised that I have a right to tell you if the work on my mouth is done incorrectly. The dentist proceeded to glue on my crown without the proper adjustments and told me he will no longer see me again and do not make future appts. This has been reported to my insurance and I will make sure to report to anyone that can do something about this dental office professionalism. The work was not complete and I was treated unfairly. Just because I have medicaid does not mean I should be treated unfair. This dentist is rude and unprofessional. read more

I always have great experiences at Dr. Nkutu's office and would highly recommend him to anyone that's looking for a dentist. He is skilled, knowledgeable and kind. He walks you through everything he is doing and the appointment reminders are very helpful. The lady at the front desk is friendly and helpful. Really really great find and very conveniently located. I had been looking for a well rated dentist in the DC area for a while (most on my insurance have horrible reviews). GOt switched to a new insurance, Delta Dental, that Dr. Kirunda accepts. Scheduling online for a new patient was super easy. They texted me two days later to confirm and then sent a follow-up text the day before my appointment. Office staff were super friendly and nice. I was seen almost immediate for X-rays and dental cleaning, which was pleasant and efficient. Looking at the X-rays and my teeth, I needed to replace a large filling with a crown (something my previous dentist had said I would need in a couple years). I did not feel that they were trying to up-sell anything or give unnecessary treatment. He walked through the rationale for the crown and had me talk with the office account staff to make sure I knew what insurance would cover and made me feel like the options, though recommended, were my choice and I could say no if I wanted to. Very pleased with the dental work and the care that was given. I usually dread the dentist, but I left feeling like my teeth were well cared for. Highly recommend. read more
