It gives all the basics needed for train travel, but could use an update hopefully in the future. Definitely not bad, it handles its purpose well for the most part. The Deets: I spend quite a few weekends in Asbury Park now. Two of main ways to get there besides driving from "the city" is either by ferry or train, and of course the NJ Transit train is both less expensive of the two and gets you right to the center of town. This part brings me to the subject of my review today, the NJ Transit Asbury Park station. Mainly, it does the job and is adequate. Yes, it may be a bit dated (OK quite a bit dated) and not in that old classic nostalgic type of way. But it has a pretty spacious waiting area inside where you can shelter from the cold/heat, a dedicated ticket office, bathrooms, etc. It even has a little snack area available when open, which is a modest simple little corner you can order and get refreshments while you wait on your train. The station seems to have limited hours for accessing the inside on weekends, just a heads up on that one. The AP station is not bad however it definitely could do with a facelift and some TLC, but it handles a customer's needs adequately. Wikipedia offers a good little write up on it at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asbury_Park_station .

Most transfers going south are quick and smooth, not exactly the same going north. Waiting outside during winter can be a bit brisk as there is no completely enclosed area. It does the job. The Deets: Over the last few years, I've used this station in Long Branch as a NJ Transit train connection point going south to Asbury Park/Bay Head, as well as going back north to NYC or Newark airport. It sees a pretty good amount of action as the transfer point due to this fact. Transfers usually go smoothly going south when transferring at Long Branch, as many times the train continuing south is on the other track directly across from the train that just brought you into the station. However, connecting there going back up north towards NYC usually means waiting for one of trains to come up from the maintenance/storage yard adjacent to it...and many times it is not immediate, usually resulting in a wait. If it is in the winter, it's not fun to wait as there is no completely enclosed waiting area that I've seen. The waiting area I've experienced is covered but outside including one bench area having glass around it, not completely enclosed from the elements. There is a staffed ticket office and also ticket kiosks available, but I have used the NJ Transit phone app for tickets most of the time which is very convenient. It has a pretty sizable parking lot and I imagine the spots are for a cost for commuters going into the city. All in all, the Long Branch train facility is adequate and does the job needed.

I'm very proud of L.S. that they have taken such care of this building throughout the years. It was recently completely refurbished and has never looked better. So many towns in the area used to have classic train stations .... unfortunately most have let those buildings rot and/or torn them down altogether. Thankfully that hasn't happened here. Sadly, the interior of the station is not always open, so unless you are part of the morning commute, you are likely to miss the restored interior. Its a shame to miss it. Inside coffee and snacks await the morning traveler. If you are arriving later in the day however, and can't get inside due to the hour, there is a pizza shop conveniently located across the way, so don't despair. The Little Silver Train Station is a great alternative to the Red Bank Train Station. It truly is in a class all by itself.

If you arrive Friday afternoon, parking lots are generally open and after 5PM and free for the entire weekend. $15 and 1 1/2 hours later you're standing outside of Penn Station. The train is fairly comfortable, but don't expect Amtrak style seats. I would say it's a glorified Metro. If you're new to the process, you can buy a ticket from the station through a kiosk. A conductor will come by and pick up your ticket, and put a sliver of paper on your seat saying that you paid for your ride. If you forget to get a ticket from the kiosk, then you can pay the conductor directly. A good option if you don't want to deal with traffic, tolls, and parking in the city. There is a fairly large station house on the north side of the northbound platform, which houses a waiting room, a ticket window, and a medium-sized bagel shop, which does wonderful business every day.I am only giving two stars because the station, during the afternoon, doesn't have a sheltered or indoor place to sit on the NY-bound side. It's a major inconvenience on a cold day, and in general, there is inadequate seating. Trains normally seem to be on time, though, and the scenery from the train is superb. Between Perth Amboy and South Amboy, you slowly cross the Raritan River on a low bridge with no siderails, giving the impression that you are on a boat, with an unobstructed scenic view of Staten Island to the northeast. The water views from this line are pretty amazing. Also, in the future, I'd be more inclined to take the bus, since the train on Sundays only runs once hourly NY and Long Branch, whereas the 139 bus runs twice hourly. This train can be packed coming back, and the fact that people occupy valuable seating space with their jackets and feet is very frustrating.
