In the field of commercial catering supplies, Nisbets is one of the major players in the UK. Already a satisfied customer of Nisbets online, I'm glad to have this huge store open in Manchester, and I am sure many local chefs and restaurant managers are too.
Many of the smaller items that you would need to run a commercial kitchen are here - a wall of knives, utensils, small appliances, boxes of crockery, pots and pans, gastronorm pans, chef's clothing, footwear, cleaning equipment and more.
Large appliances such as commercial ovens or refrigerators are not here - the emphasis is more on things that a restaurant might want to make casual purchases on a day-to-day basis. Also, if the website has premium and budget items of the same item, then it is likely to be the budget items in stock here. For example, they stock an extensive range of Vogue gastronorm pans and cookware rather than the premium Bourgeat range.
Although the orientation is more towards the commercial customer, they are totally welcoming to the public. I've found the staff fairly knowledgable, intelligent and patient. The major test that I gave them so far, which was to show me how to use a hand moulin which I had bought online, they passed with flying colours.
Before this store opened, I would say I had a pretty good idea of kitchenware available on the high street, due to my regular sweeps through the likes of Debenhams, House of Fraser (Kendals), TK Maxx, Home Sense, Clas Olhson, Wilko and more. I do find I am now buying smaller items at this Nisbets store that I mght previously have bought elsewhere. However, even though Nisbets prices are competitive, department store sales and the deep discounts of TK Maxx/Home Sense can still come out tops sometimes. For example, if you are looking to spend under £20 on a single kitchen knife I would suggest looking first in TK Maxx or Home Sense.
Still, the opportunity to see professional catering supplies in the metal is invaluable. Being able to try on chef's clothing or footwear for size in their changing room is another big boon.
I will definitely be looking in here every time I pass as I learn something new each time I come in here, whether from looking at the stock or from conversations with the staff.
To make a restaurant business work, it would seem that a lot of different pieces of the puzzle need to be in place (staff, food supplies, marketing, etc). Which makes it nice to know that, if you have the money, finding a local supply of standard white ramekins or pie dishes is not going to be a problem!
Conclusion: highly recommended for the commercial chef and also for the keen home cook. read more
