Prior to the pandemic, we planned to get married at the beautiful Hammond museum in North Salem on 8/8/20. Nisa Lee is the exclusive caterer for the venue, so clients are mandated to use her for food services. My husband and I are both physicians in training (aka very tight budget) - so we planned to use Nisa only for food. We signed the contract on 2/23/20 and provided the $5K deposit. This contract included line items for various services (- NO mention of an hourly rate). We exchanged a few emails, had 3 phone calls, and had designed a menu by the time COVID hit (approximately 3 weeks later). Once COVID hit, all planning went on hold. The museum was closed during this time (per NY guidelines) with no timeline for reopening. To add to the complexities, my husband and I continued to work in the hospital throughout this time as essential workers.
When it became clear that the wedding was not going to happen as scheduled, we began discussing return of deposit. The Hammond immediately refunded their deposit. Nisa, however, offered a refund of only $1500- keeping $3500 for herself. We asked many times for justification of the fees, but were simply told that she was a "seasoned wedding planner" with an hourly rate is $200 and that she estimated that she had accrued that amount (based on phone calls, emails, revising the proposal, the initial tour at the Hammond before signing the contract, designing the menu, etc).
The way this was handled was very unprofessional. We really did like the Hammond, but unfortunately we cannot recommend their caterer. read more
