There are a lot of Indian/Nepalese restaurants in Helsinki, so I decided to never eat at the same one twice. Tonight I took the metro to a random stop I've never explored before and ended up here at Nilgiri. It is definitely a small place with exactly seven tables for four. Another table and myself were the only ones here. And some lady came and got take-out.
I ordered the Sabji ko Pakoda (deep fried veggies. I think we call them veggie fritters in the US) and Nilgiri Mixmas Karai which is a variety of lamb, chicken, prawns, paneer and veggies in a spicy tomato spinach sauce. It was served with basmati rice and naan.
The Sabji ko Pakoda needed salt and there wasn't any on the table. The dipping sauce it was served with also needed salt. Otherwise it was fine. Just a bit bland. That would have knocked off 1/2 star, but the rest was delicious.
The Nilgiri Mixmas Karai was very nice, spicy enough that I had to blow my nose, but not too spicy. Just right for my tastes. The spinach in the sauce gave it a good deep color. When the meats and veggies were eaten, there was plenty of sauce left to scoop onto the naan. Good food.
This would have been a 4 1/2 for the bland fried veggies, but I scored based on the main dish. read more
