Kristen (sorry if I spelled it wrong) helped me. She was very friendly, easy going and helpful. It was a very quick process to exchange my shoes, no hassle at all. I was very excited with my first pair of Hoka and was looking forward to comfortable walking. Unfortunately I finally wore them last weekend on a trip that had lots of walking. After the second day, I couldn't walk in them anymore. My feet are too wide and I had such pain in the area where my feet were hanging over the soles. I wasn't sure of the return policy about worn shoes but went back to ask about exchanging once again. I happened to run into Kristen again and asked her if she remembered helping me last time. She initially didn't until I told her the Mother's Day gift and the color. She instantly recalled our encounter. After explaining to her about the shoes and asked if I could exchange them, she said "yes!" I was so relieved! She then proceeded with looking for the same shoes in wider fit for me. She had to pull out 3 pairs. After trying them on, I felt the pain in the same area again. I decided that Hoka and I were not meant to be. Since my husband bought me Hoka and Hoka seems to be all the hype lately, I really wanted to give it chance. I've been married to New Balance for years. My feet are wide and they have wide shoes that make my feet happy. I happened to be wearing a pair of New Balance today. Kristen took notice to what I wore and to what I said. She brought out a pair of New Balance that she said is comparable to Hoka. They felt really good. I was sold. However, she didn't stop there. She brought out another pair for me to compare. After trying about 3 Hoka and 2 NB, I finally exchanged the Hoka for NB one that she recommended. Two popped up and The Backpacker was one of them. It's a dreary rainy day and lunch time. I managed to find the shop in spite of the lunch traffic on Jefferson Hwy. I parked and walked inside. I was immediately received with a friendly greeting by several of the staff with offers to help me. I told them I was "just looking around" and they left me to myself with me knowing if I needed any help they'd be there. I like that. I wandered around for about 30 minutes and I managed to find a few things. Some I needed and some I didn't know I needed. So, I carried my bounty to the register and was checking out. I asked the young man if they had a THule or Yakima kayak loader. He replied, " We don't have any T-hule loaders or Yakima loaders in stock." I always find it amusing when the folks in the outfitting shops do that. I'm not "Sveedish" so I'll continue to say "THule" LOL. In all seriousness, the shop is very comfortable and friendly. When my order arrived, I received two different sizes -- a 7 and a 9. I called the online customer service line to see how to fix this and was told I had to drive to a store to exchange them -- the closest store to me is in Baton Rouge, nearly an hour away. Before making the drive, I called the store and spoke with Tim, the manager. I explained the situation and asked for help making sure the correct size would be there before I wasted a long trip. Instead of assisting me, Tim just transferred me to the shoe department. When I asked why, he claimed he had already spoken with them and confirmed they had the shoes. That was not true -- because when I spoke to Sully in the shoe department, he didn't know what size I needed and had to go check. When I pointed this out to Tim and asked why Sully didn't know, he said nothing. I told him I wasn't trying to debate, I just wanted to make sure the shoes would be there when I arrived the next day. He said, "Yes ma'am, go to the store to pick them up." When I got there, the shoes were not held and no one could find them. I asked for Tim, but he refused to come to the front. Instead, Missy came to help. She even mentioned she was tired of Tim's behavior, and thankfully she found the shoes for me. I truly appreciated her professionalism because she was the only one who actually helped. After wearing the shoes for a day and a half, I realized they hurt my feet and made them numb. When I called to return them, the online support told me the purchase was now considered an in-store purchase (because of the exchange), so they couldn't process a return online. I spent over 50 minutes on the phone with escalation just trying to figure out how to return them -- and was told there was no easy fix. My only options were to ship the shoes back through UPS to the Baton Rouge store, which would take up to 21 days before I'd receive a refund, or drive another 45 minutes to an hour to return them in person. Since I have no faith in the Baton Rouge store handling it correctly, I now have to make another long drive just to get my refund. Absolutely ridiculous. Between the shipping mix-up, the lack of accountability, a manager who didn't take responsibility or tell the truth, poor communication, and total inconvenience, this has been one of the most frustrating shopping experiences I've ever had.
