My anxiety and stress levels were starting to effect my performance at work so I had my boss tell me during our one on one sessions telling me that maybe I should look into seeing a therapist. I've never been to therapy and the idea of it was really intimidating, but since I wanted to do really good at work and am tired of having my anxiety and stress control me so much, I decided to seek professional help for it. I didn't know where to look and decided to look on yelp for someone local. I know that finding the right therapist is similar to finding the right partner. Sometimes you don't meet the right people the first couple times around, but I feel really lucky that I found Nicole who happened to be the right therapist for me at the first go. I started seeing Nicole around July 2019 and after diligently working with her once a week and doing the homework every time, I can say right now after over half a years of sessions with Nicole, I'm in a very good place mentally and emotionally. Today was my last session with Nicole - I could always call her for another session if some life stuff came up and if I had difficulty handling it but Nicole wants her clients to get better and to get to a point where they can manage their own challenges successfully - I think this is REALLY important when looking for a therapist. You don't want a therapist that wants you to be codependent on them and going to them forever because they see you as a vulnerable cash cow. I've always said that everyone can use a good therapist, no matter how big or small your problems may be....but I'm so lucky that I *finally* found the BEST therapist!! Not for lack of trying though. Sometimes you come to Yelp after the fact to see if you were alone in your experience with a business. This woman was actually so cold when she gave me a call back. I was really stunned by her lack of compassion. She straight up said she wasn't Middle Eastern when we spoke but from her website she says she's from Iran. It's fine to pick & choose the sorts of clients you want to work with. What didn't sit well was her dismissive tone when we spoke & her gaslighting me over my mentioning I thought it would be a good match that she was middle eastern & her denying that she was. Just say that I don't fit the profile of your cherry-picked clients. All is well since I did end up connecting with a truly kind & compassionate therapist after all. But this experience has sat on my heart for a while & when Yelp showed I had only given a star rating and that I should write, I figured I would share my experience for the benefit of others who are looking for a therapist. read more

Seeing Nicole made me realize that therapists are just imperfect people trying to help other imperfect people through life's obstacles. During my time with her I often left feeling judged, it wasn't until I discussed this with other health care professionals that I realized it is not normal or acceptable for a therapist to make you feel re-traumatized and misunderstood. This review is based on one interaction with MFT Nicole Abadi of Long Beach. I scheduled a phone introduction appointment with Abadi due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Abadi called my cell as scheduled for our appointment. However, the call disconnected as I answered the call. I knew it was Abadi because I had saved her number in my contacts after scheduling the appointment and was waiting for her call on the day and time that was scheduled. After the call disconnected, I called back and the call went straight to voicemail. I thought oh, well maybe she is calling me that's why it went to voicemail so I waited a few minutes.... Abadi did not call back...I waited and it's now way PAST our appointment time, so I called Abadi one last time (third time) to say that our call was disconnected (in case she thought I hung up intentionally) and that I waited for her to call back. At this point I probably should have considered this a "red flag." I was annoyed and inconvenienced about Abadi's "no show" for our appointment and I was left wondering why a therapist would call as scheduled, hang up/disconnect and not call back. On the same day and 45 minutes later and after our scheduled appointment time, Abadi did call back. Abadi reprimanded me for calling her office 3 times and leaving a message on the 3rd attempt. She told me that I had severe issues with boundaries and that my actions are concerning and irrational. She added that she is so glad that this happened because my behavior revealed to her she could never have someone like me as a client and that my actions are a clear indication that I am not a good match for her. Seems to me that Abadi's reaction and response are actually irrational and concerning for someone in the mental health profession. Prior to the disconnected call we have never met or had an appointment. Abadi knows nothing about me, accept for what she concluded and assessed from a disconnected call interaction. Even as I tried to apologize and explain as to why I called her office after the call was disconnected -- because her reaction made me feel like I did something wrong, she continued to berate me. The imperious manner of Abadi, an MFT is disturbing, irresponsible and a detriment to individuals that are seeking mental health services. A professional and good therapist will never treat clients in a way that shames them or is hurtful. A professional and good therapist will respond calmly and maturely at all times. Instead Abadi lost control of her emotions, failed to take accountability for her part in the situation, and then criticized and judged someone she has never met or counseled. Thankfully I do have prior experience with an EXCELLENT and PROFESSIONAL therapist who is no longer available to clients because she went on to pursue an executive role in the mental health industry, and is the reason I am seeking another therapist.
