everything here is expensive & the tenderloins are not that good compared to all the hype

Brenda was an absolute bitch. Came from out of town, was not greeted for 20min while the other server yelled, "Brenda, have you seen #6?" referring to us being sat. When I asked if I could have the gravy on top of my fries, her reply was "we don't do that". So when my order was delivered, I dumped the gravy on my fries and she rolled her eyes. My husband and I both had the mini-tenderloin sandwich, shared some yummy French fries which tasted like they were fresh cut potatoes, and shared a piece of sugar cream pie. The tenderloin was delicious! There was a hint of cinnamon in the pie, which gave it a unique flavor and it had a flaky crust. Our waiter was attentive and personable. If we had a cooler with us we would have brought some frozen tenderloins and pie home! Let me say that I love breaded tenderloins and always seek them out. There's a little town in Indiana called Huntington. In Huntington, there is a fantastic little diner called Nick's Kitchen. It is a slice of heaven if you love amazing food for cheap as well as history and meeting every day folk for a bit of wisdom. The Pork Tenderloin Sandwich is famous and as good as any I've had in the Midwest, including my own. It's well worth the trip. To those that say this is not an authentic Midwest Pork Tenderloin sandwich, I will quote the owner whom I agree with entirely; "They don't know what they're talking about!" I've traveled extensively in the Midwest. Cowens in Washington, MO has an amazing pork tenderloin sandwich and Nicks' ranks right up there with that one, if not better. The place was packed for lunch and that's always a good sign. I could not recommend this restaurant more highly. It is an American gem, one of a dying breed being supplanted by the likes of Red Robin and Texas Roadhouse and numerous other corporate owned feeding troughs. This restaurant is adorable....it's decorated with historic photos of the Huntington area, many of them from the railroad. There are booths along the walls, tables in the center, and a lunch counter with vinyl covered stools. I traveled to Huntington for work, and decided I HAD to eat at the "birthplace of the Hoosier Pork Tenderloin sandwich," even if that meant I wouldn't be able to make it to the Dan Quayle Museum. I had a monstrous ham and cheese omelet, the size of my plate. It had nice chunks of real ham (not the over-processed lunchmeat stuff) and was loaded up with cheddar cheese on the inside. It comes with 2 pieces of butter-laden toast. Shamefully, I ate most of the toast as well. Why is this shameful? Because when I bit the toast, butter dripped out. Oh so good! My coworker had the tenderloin, and carved a piece off for me. It's very good. Nice white pork, not fatty, with a thin golden breading...I'd say comfortably among the top 3 tenderloins I've had. Neither of us had room for additional sides, and I appreciate that the sandwiches and omelets don't "come with" potatoes in addition to the bread. No one needs that much starch in one meal! Wow but no. Having seen the tv review of this place we chose to drive the 90 miles North to try it out. Diner is old and a bit worn but full of locals. I expected the decor to be like it was so no harm no foul. We did share that we were first timers and wanted to experience the magic. Seating took a while as no one was skilled in bussing empty tables. A young lady was in training but really had no training. After being told to sit at a table then asked to give it up as someone else was sitting there (a ghost?) we moved to yet another dirty table. We sat for a good 8 minutes waiting for someone to wipe the table and change the paper mats restock the condiments and pick up the cash tip coins and all. Ordered our food but order got lost somehow. While apologies flowed, a basic tenderloin and fries seemed to be hard to track within their lack of a system. Tenderloin was fine but who serves the already placed and sliced onion with the bitter green core still attached? Bit into that and had to figure out why the flavor train had been derailed. We were both satisfied with the tenderloin but the fries had to be the poorest attempt I have ever experienced. Greasy limp and greasy. Did I mention greasy? They were not edible. Just not sure what the deal was. Others were saved the same quality and dabbled with them trying to find one you could pick up without it falling down your shirt leaving an oil slick. We both left our pile hoping the server would ask but to no avail. Finally had to try their homemade sugar cream pie. Over baked crust. Decent custard. Odd burnt cinnamon sugar top. Think creme brûlée type surface on a sugar cream pie but shattered all over slice and plate. Crust was grey in color reflecting its lack of moisture. Price at $3 per slice seemed fair for what it turned out to be. After getting my 3rd glass of requested water we were ready to leave. Yes I drank 3 due to the length of the order prep. Really wanted this to work but this past Saturday at noon was a bit less than so so. Thus the 2 stars. Oh. Restrooms? Lol. Need a huge remodel there. Wow. Sorry folks. My LAST visit to Nick's was on Tuesday, November 10. I gave it THREE chances. None were notable or outstanding. On my first visit I ordered the "famous" original breaded pork tenderloin sandwich. The sandwich was served with the typical hamburger-sized bun with the tenderloin extending. It made NO SENSE to be charged EXTRA for a SLICE of tomato, so I skipped that and had my usual mustard, extra onions, and pickle. The overall consistency, flavor, and thickness were acceptable, but I have had better tenderloin sandwiches within walking distance of Nick's. Perhaps it is "famous" because it was "first"? On my second visit I ordered the grilled pork tenderloin sandwich with similar results. It did taste a bit better since it did not have the deep-fried oil associated with the breaded sandwich. I would recommend THIS sandwich for any pork tenderloin sandwich newbies! The homemade coleslaw and hand-cut French fries were BOTH very good and served in diner style at CORRECT temperatures. That was a plus! The old-fashioned sugar cream pie, a Hoosier phenomena, was also very good but was not served chilled. On my third (AND LAST) visit I ordered the two eggs (over medium), hash browns, and (wheat) toast breakfast special as well as an order of the "incredible hash browns", a cup of gravy, water with a slice of lemon, and coffee with LOTS of cream. (I usually use TEN creams. ;) ) I also enquired about how many slices of bacon came with the special if it were added. The server stated that she thought it was two slices of bacon but was not sure. The eggs, well-buttered toast, and gravy were all WONDERFUL! The regular hash browns were greasy. The "incredible hash browns" were a horrible, cheesy, greasy mess. I asked AGAIN for lemon but never received any. There were THREE slices of bacon which I had not ordered. When the server first approached our table the FIRST thing I asked was if she could put something under the table feet to stop the table from wobbling. After FIFTEEN MINUTES waiting for our food, I finally put FOUR SUGAR PACKETS under the table feet to stabilize it. I set the creams for the coffee on the table (see photo). For some unknown reason, the server attempted to remove them THREE times. I politely asked her to leave them on the table each time. When I pointed out that I had NOT ordered the bacon which I had NOT eaten, the server stated that she had written it on the order. To her credit, the $2.00 charge for the bacon was removed from the bill. I am Huntington born-and-bred and no longer live in Huntington, but I do visit frequently. Before ordering on this third (AND LAST) visit, my friend who was a first-time patron but a long-time resident of Huntington noticed IMMEDIATELY how much more expensive the prices were. I told her not to be concerned since it was my treat. As an example, another local establishment offers made-to-order home-made pies for $8.00 with one-day notice; Nick's charges $12.00. It is unconscionable that EVERYTHING is way OVER-PRICED to gouge the tourists AND the locals! Finally, on my second visit the owner came over to my table to ask why I had given the "famous" original breaded pork tenderloin sandwich mediocre comments and a mediocre review on a FACEBOOK® group page dedicated to pork tenderloin enthusiasts. I told her the TRUTH. On my third (and LAST) visit the owner went to every table EXCEPT mine. She continued visiting and chatting with the "regulars"... read more

When you walk into Nick's Kitchen you can sense the history of the restaurant and the important role it still plays in Huntington. It's a solid breakfast spot-good food, decent cup of coffee, friendly service, reasonable prices. Nothing fancy, but exactly what you'd expect to find in a small Midwestern town. I had the Incredible Breakfast Bowl which was good, but didn't quite live up to its name. Personally, I would change up the layers of the bowl, but keep the same ingredients. We made a special side trip in our RV to Huntington just to eat at Nick's Kitchen as we had heard about their famous breaded pork tenderloin sandwiches. We were not disappointed. It was sooooo good!! Hubby had the rhubarb pie and raved. My sugar cream pie is better but theirs was rich and good. So glad we came here to partake of a bit of Hoosier heritage. Wanting to take a drive on a nice afternoon a few weeks ago, the husbo and I made our way to Nick's Kitchen. Between the two of us, we had a grilled cheese basket and some kind of fish special. The food was a-ok, but nothing spectacular. The service was perfectly nice and efficient and the atmosphere was pretty a standard midwestern diner look (the elementary aged kid cleaning and busing tables was a cute, small town touch tho). Let's not kid ourselves, though. We didn't go to Nick's for the food or the service. We went for the pie. And the pie was pretty much everything. I love the pie flight option--3 smallish mix and match slices. That flight option pretty much guarantees I'll make my way back someday soon! read more

They had really good food that came out blazing hot and fresh. The customer service was superb, they lady serving us made sure our drinks never got below half empty and was enjoying and had everything we needed. The pies were delicious, I had no idea which I wanted just by the pictures on the fridge so she pulled some out and showed me. I ended up getting the sugar cream and it was amazing! The walls inside are filled with tons of history and show off the nearby trains. The dinner has an almost 50's vibe to it. read more

We decided to venture to this location as our first stop for the legendary pork tenderloin since this is where the sandwich was invented and this restaurant is always on the top of the best lists. The restaurant was an old school diner, which we loved, and was clean, with clean restrooms which was welcomed after the long drive. The service was fine, and the food came out quick. The fries and sandwich were prepared well, and tasted good, but I could have easily set it aside for a good burger. It was not a wow factor on the flavor scale as expected from the reviews and that it's voted in usually one of the top two spots on "the best" lists. My husband and I both agreed that one of us had gotten a different menu item so we could have something that may have been more impressive to write about. Unfortunately we did not try the pie since we stopped at Good's Candy on the way up and had indulged in their yummy ice cream. I do want to add that we really enjoyed several of the shops in square and recommend if you travel to this destination to plan to spend a little time visiting the local shops. Notably, Antiqology has a wall of specialty sodas and for breakfast we popped in Sugar Mama's for a wonderful orange roll, and a very reasonably priced coffee at the coffee shop. read more

Yelp Nation, you let me down here. 3-3.5 stars Our Nick's virgin party of 3 all ordered the famous original breaded tenderloins - and on recommendation saved room for the touted pies. The tenderloin was good. It wasn't knock my socks off - I've had a ton of tenderloins, this was good, not in my top 5 Indiana breaded tenderloins - probably not in my top 10 either. Pork was pounded too thinly for our preference. I want some chew, I don't care for it to be the size of a hub cap. It was a cracker crumb breading. Served hot and loaded with the garden as requested. Pie: we had the sugar cream and black raspberry. I've eaten lots of pie - again an underwhelming example. Meh. Would I return. Perhaps. Destination worthy - not for us and I'm very sad to admit it. This might be THE Hoosier tenderloin. Any diner that lasts 100 years is worth checking out. If the neon art deco sign doesn't draw you in, hopefully this review will. The Hoosier Pork Tenderloin was not only amazing, it was traditional. Juicy inside, crunchy outside, small bun, some onion, a slice of tomato, and some mustard. Delectable. Everyone talks about the Nick's pork tenderloin... They have a good promo spin machine going for them. Seriously folks, this breaded pork tenderloin has had the life pounded out of it, crumb breaded similar to panko. It should be considered a fritter or pork milanese, not a hand batter-breaded pork tenderloin. The real thing doesn't need pounded out and cooked long enough to skip across ice like a hockey puck. By the time they are done it's hard to tell if it is chicken, beef, or mongoose. Hence the two star review. There are better tenderloins in Huntington, some convenience stores/gas stations have better versions. As a diner this is a decent enough place to go. They offer typical diner food, as good as any. I have eaten tenderloins here more than once and probably will again, it's just not the place I would choose for the "real thing" tenderloin. For those who aren't from the midwest what hoosiers order as a tenderloin is a slice of pork tenderloin slathered in breading then deep fried until it floats and then all that goodness is bunned for your pleasure. read more

I first visited Nick's in November to get a Sugar Cream pie and it was well worth the 30 minute detour on my travel from MI to Indy. My family so enjoyed that I made another stop on my next trip for New Year Eve. Unfortunately, there must have been a different pie baker for the second batch. The first pie in Nov was sold frozen, but looked exactly like the picture and tasted amazing once thawed. The 2 pies purchased in Dec were also frozen, but lacked the hard sugar top, had a thick undercooked crust, and tasted like flour. I was very disappointed. I may go back to try the pork tenderloin, but will be careful with pie purchase. The first visit deserved a 5 rating, but the second lowered to a 3. read more

I was happy to have applesauce as a side instead of potatoes or bread, although I wish it had been SUGAR free. We have been there twice now...and have not been disappointed! I only get to Huntington about once a year and I look forward to visiting Nick's. The food is delicious (Chicken bacon ranch panini is my fav). The pie sampler is amazing! We specifically came here for brunch and quickly became disappointed when we found out that only lunch or dinner would be the food options. Down to earth comfort food! Had a chance opportunity to eat here and I was pleasantly surprised!!!

We stopped here on the way they Huntington and OMG I'm so glad we did. The place was a throwback in time with the bar stools and the counter an old fashioned milkshake machine and a pie fridge. Their menu is a good size with huge portions. The tenderloin is enormous and their burgers are perfect for cutting into two and eating one half at a time. The fries are a huge portion and oh so tasty. The entire meal was fabulous. I wish I lived closer because this spot would be a once a week hit for my daughter and I. Service is great, not only were they patient with all of our questions but they kept their smiles the entire time. They food is made to order and comes out fairly quickly. The soda tasted sooo good out of their soda fountain. We didn't try pie because we were so full but maybe one day because they are big slices as well. It's busy in there so be prepared to wait for a table and the servers are very busy but they are attentive! We constantly saw them fluttering around to every table making sure everyone was satisfied.
