My new favourite local eatery…read more Oozing with charm and tranquility, St Margaret's Cafe is a perfect way to unwind with a stunning garden outlook (I imagine especially so in Spring), warm and inviting service and the food..., the food was just amazing! So good in fact, that I had to have dessert with my breakfast (and I would totally recommend the season fruits with mango sorbet and nut brittle to all).

This place is seriously one of Auckland's hidden gems. The name "Country Cafe" does it no favours. We turned up on a stunning spring Friday, and discovered the most gorgeous country garden setting, complete with lake - St Margarets is apparently such a popular wedding venue during the summer months that Fridays, Saturdays & Sundays are mostly fully booked. I can see why. Entranced by the scenery, we sat down & got just as engrossed in the menu! A delicious selection of salads & more substantial main dishes made it really difficult to choose. We opted for the Chargrilled Smoked Chicken & Candied Walnut Salad with potato & bacon & dressed with maple aioli, as well as the Oriental Sticky Slow-Cooked Pork Belly Sandwich with salad & spiced pineapple chutney. I learnt a while ago never to go past pork belly on a menu, and I haven't been disappointed yet. Both meals were stunning - visually gorgeous & utterly delicious. Well worth the drive, and with such picturesque surroundings to walk off your meal, you can bet I'll be making the drive again.

The gift was a nice little bottle of moisturiser which we received at check-out. Dinner was alright (see my review for Agave) but way too much food, so go when you're starving, breakfast was nice but the restaurant doesn't open till 9.30am...or when the feel like it, which was a pain for us because check out was at 10am and we had a plane to catch. We ended up knocking on the restaurant door because we didn't have time to wait past 9.30am. We didn't have a car, a friend dropped us off and picked us up so we couldn't just load up our bags into the car then have breakfast casually, but we had to be out of the room by 10am...it won't have been so bad if the entire breakfast was buffet but the hot food wasn't and took them 20 minutes to make it so we had to hurry before our friend came. There's no phone service so we couldn't even call her to tell her we'd be late. Reception was very nice, they let us leave our bags in the room till 10.15am without charging us because we called and explained we didn't want to leave them out in the rain. There's lots of notices in the room stating that there's a fee if you check out late. Housekeeping didn't get the message and were knocking on our door before 9.30am! We told them we'd called reception and they were ok with that. I was emailing reception when booking the chalet and enquired about booking for dinner and breakfast. They booked us in for dinner and never mentioned that an earlier breakfast could have been arranged. We found that out later. Our TV remote was missing from our room so reception sorted that out for us. The room was very nice and quite large, overlooking the water. There's a torch in the room for night walks & up to the restaurant. They have complimentary biscuits, tea, coffee & milo in the little kitchen. It was a pretty expensive experience but in theory worth the money with the inclusions, would have been much better if the restaurant was up to standard and opened earlier.

There is even a fenced outdoor garden area with dining tables, chairs and potted plants in full bloom at the moment. The indoor area is large with a children's corner. Plenty of room for two diners and a couple of larger tables for dining groups. Since frequenting this place, I've only ever had their Butchers Big Breakfast. I absolutely love it. The poached eggs are just the right runny. The streaky bacon is crisp and the sausage is a good gourmet sausage which I would guess as being a Cumberland sausage. I usually buy their iced tea but on this visit bought their antioxidant tonic drink. If you have a sweet tooth like me, then you must try their caramel oaty slice. It is absolutely dee-lish. It is buttery, the caramel is well made and the oats give it a chewy texture...and is freshly made on site. I hate when I bite into a stale sweet treat which has been in the refrigerated cabinet too long. That has never been the case here at Butchers. As cafes go, this is moderately priced and well worth it. Their food has been has been made with care and attention. Highly recommended.

We all ordered from their cabinet and got the savoury muffin for myself and had a bit of my sister's vegetarian stuffed kumara as well as tried a bite of their bacon and egg pie. Was great to have all of these heated and plated with a stick of butter with my muffin and mayo/ ketchup with the kumara. The pie was stuffed with egg and bacon pieces which was great and the muffin was soft and also packed with vege pieces. The portions were fantastic- huge and very filling even though it wasn't a complete meal and was all tasty. They have self serve water in the corner if you aren't ordering drinks which is handy. They have great indoor and outdoor seating just behind the counter found in the main building. Small and large tables with backed chairs available for groups of several sizes and a lot of them were taken by the time we'd arrived. Looks like quite a popular place. Decent sized car park next to the seating area that you can enter through if not through the main butchers shop entrance door. If you're in the area, this is a good spot to take a break for re-fueling.
