Like the railway next door, this place is very Coromandel, and you must visit the cafe when you visit the railway. It's very rustic, and not a little bit hippy. The food has immaculate and fancy presentation (flowers, but not pretentious). I had a tempeh wrap, and even though I don't really like tempeh, it was awesome. Also had by my son were some very acceptable pancakes (crepes, if you're reading in American ;-) and my mother had high praise for her burger. Roma are unabashedly a coffee roaster and coffee shop, rather than a café. There are a small selection of cakes & slices and a few tables and chairs but they know their focus. Beans are roasted on site (the operation on full display) and these are then distributed wholesale to other cafes around the area as well as to retail customers at the Drury site. The service at their takeout coffee counter is friendly & prompt; once you've made your way through the line to place your order, your coffee arrives very quickly. The house blend of beans is full-bodied and every coffee double shot unless otherwise requested. Ridiculously cheap compared to some Auckland cafes, it's easy to see why Roma Coffee Roasters is so popular.

The decor inside is so cute, they have heaps of tea and coffee accessories all over the walls, like stovetop espresso machines, teapots, cups, gorgeous little tins of all sizes and shapes for storing your purchases in, not to mention an impressive range of tea leaves and coffee beans that you can buy in quantities to suit. So it's also an excellent place to buy presents too, because, unlike the odd sauces and endless balsamic vinegars we give and are given and never use, tea and coffee are the kind of presents that will be used and enjoyed. At lunch time they always have an assortment of interesting and healthy salads -- tons of vegetarian options, and you can mix and match as many as you want in a container. One of my favorite options of late is the spicy eggplant. It's half an eggplant that's been roasted, scooped out, mixed up with spices and whatnot, and put back in the skin. I LOVE eggplant, and this is as good as it gets!!! I always find it hard to resist their beautiful cakes. It was rainy, we were cranky....and we wanted to have a good day....and thus here we were. Americano and tea. Americano served with water to dilute to my liking (a win). Tea served in a personal press (double win!). My buddy got French toast and I got the smashed pea on multigrain (with mint, Parmesan, watercress) with smoked salmon. All of it was scrumptious. The staff were friendly and the service was fast to boot (not a common occurrence in New Zealand). I would definitely come back and, in case you were wondering, it turned out to be a Good day!
