The litmus test for these seafood purveyors (sorry fishmongers!) is sometime mid-morning on Christmas Eve:
Scene: Raining, blustery day in down-under Sydney. Grey polarising filters should be on the lens. This day is miserable. Zoom out to reveal an overpass of cars stuck in deadlock and horns tooting madly. Far below, a solitary figure is walking past a group of happy-snapping Japanese tourists towards a blue building half shaded by the overpass. The figure (it's me!) is holding his nose from the horrid stench of the bins which are right there (why are they RIGHT THERE???) at the entrance to the fish markets. He's limping slightly, because he's been wounded already this christmas-battle. But bravely, resolutely, he soldiers forth, why? Because he must. Food has been promised this christmas, and that food must be sea.... ...food.
Scene: utter chaos inside the carpark of the fish markets - chaos worse than an Algerian bazaar at closing time after Indy has trashed the place with a whip and a screaming female sidekick. We have entered the fish markets, and on this day, today of all days. Oh the horror, the horror! Zoom in on the solitary figure, bustling past crews of frantic families trying to find the perfect fish for Xmas. Grannies shooting past on rascal scooters, burly Lebanese gents thrashing each other over a lobster. But this solitary figure walks on, purposefully into the big blue building. This is a man who has seen the horror of war, the horror of the fish markets on Christmas Eve.
This is a man who knows exactly what to do.
Straight up to the counter at Nicholas Seafoods, at the far end of the mall. Friendly staff. Beautiful seafood. Order taken, Payed for at the far end where the registers are. Two minutes later, seafood is brought over, freshly wrapped and ready to go, in sturdy plastic bags.
In. Out. Fish Markets on Christmas Eve. Twenty Minutes. BBBOOOYAKASHA!!!!!!
BONUS ROUND! I didn't drive, so... 70 minutes TOTAL from leaving my house to walking back into my house... and on busses too! Oh my but that is a record and a half.... I WIN!!!!!
Nicholas Seafood Traders are probably the best of the bunch here at the fish markets. I've ordered seafood from them for years, and they are my go-to place in the markets. They're a bit pricey, but you pay for quality, and quality is what you get. I'd give them five stars, but I haven't done the whole experience (I've never sat down to eat at their eatery) so I don't feel it would be fair to give them the whole five-yards-of-stars without doing so.
Why bother with all the other seafood traders, when you can go straight in, walk to the back of the markets, be accosted by the sweetest smelling fishmonger in the place (that's something!) and get the freshest looking seafood in the entire stretch? It's a no-brainer. read more
