While looking for unique things to do in Philly on a recent trip, Nice Things... Handmade kept popping up in my research. The hype was well worth it - this store is a GEM! Nice Things... Handmade is a well-crafted collection of handmade items that are full of personality and life. From greeting cards that actually say what you think (like "Congrats on your breakup! You really dodged a bullet there"), colorful prints, to Reality Bites light switch covers, I wanted to buy at least half the store. If Etsy and its many Philly Based artists collaborated to create a unique store that collaborated and branched out to sell the most unique hand crafted art possible, One might say that either Art Star or Nice Things Handmade is the place that best equals the end result. But While Art Star is most definitely the place that has the backing and super sized events like its twice a year Craft Bazaar, while being smaller scale Nice Things is the spot that has the word of mouth appeal and more unique items. From painted bird kitchen bottle openers, Scrabble piece beer coasters, incredible jewelry and T-shirts; to recycled cassette tape wallets, catchy postcards and posters, and HIPSTER BINGO; Nice Things has plenty of things that run the gamut of your art shopping needs. And if you go during the Second Saturday of the month you might just come across a unique celebration of art that's worth catching! read more

I was in town visiting Philly for the weekend and stopped by this store. My 7 1/2 months pregnant sister-in-law had to utilize the bathroom, so when she found a door that was unlocked with a toilet inside, she used it. The woman behind the register appeared to be socializing with some friends the whole time so I guess she didn't notice it. When my sister-in-law came out of the bathroom, the owner (and/or woman behind the register?) stopped talking to her friends and started berating her in front of all of the customers for using the bathroom! When she apologized, she said, "I mean you already went, I can't reverse time or put it back in you, but I really wish you didn't do that." She went on to explain that people steal the merchandise that is stored in the bathroom, and even after we explained that she needed to use the bathroom urgently due to pregnancy and for no other reason, she said she wanted to "pat down the bump." Who yells at a visibly pregnant woman for using the bathroom? A monster. Put a sign on the door, or better yet, lock it. The whole experience was really tacky and distasteful. We won't be back. read more

The man behind the counter was very knowledgable about their products, all of which are very unique and hand-made! And he even offered to put aside a print i fell in love with, and plans to hold it for me until I get paid next week. It's a great place to shop for children's gifts as well as more adult-themed items like in my picture here. My friend and I genuinely enjoyed our experience at this shop! read more

And it does in fact have nice things! This is a great spot to buy unique handmade gifts or things for yourself. I have bought multiple handmade pieces of jewelry here. There are lots of cool art prints as well as many unique items including mugs, magnets, soaps, plushies, and more. The staff is always very friendly and helpful too, which is always a plus. read more

I fell in love with this adorable store on Passyunk when I first stopped in around the holidays. At that point, my shopping was complete but there were so many cute gift ideas that I knew it was only a matter of time before I would return. In need of a baby gift and recalling the locally-made and locally-inspired onesies, I returned to find something cute for my best guy friend's adorable baby girl. This time, most of the onesie designs were super hipster. This would be great for some of my friends but totally lost on this particular couple. Fortunately, I spotted some handmade baby blankets. So soft and with gently colored patterns, it was immediately evident that this was the perfect gift. And the price was more than fair. The woman working wrapped the blanket in pink tissue paper and placed it into a simple brown shopper with the store's name. Easy peasy! Next time I need a gift that doesn't break the bank, I'm checking out Nice Things first. read more

I love this place. This shop has a great variety of nice things actually. To be honest, I am an artist that sells some prints here, so perhaps I'm biased. Elissa, the owner, is everything you'd want in a shop owner. She's friendly, welcoming and so helpful. I watch her light up when a customer comes in. Even when she's talking business with me, she still stops to welcome visitors and is knowledgeable about all the work in the shop, which means she's helpful. I'm glad she sells my prints well enough because I end up buying things there for friends. It's a great place for gifts if you want the opposite of mass produced chain store crap. PS: as an artist, I should let you know she looks out for us. She's generous with her consignment cut to maintain affordable items. She's also very supportive and proud of each artist represented in the shop. read more

This is the cutest store ever. I can always find a unique and artsy gift in here for just about anyone. It is decorated and grouped together nicely, and the owner is super sweet. I highly recommend coming here if you are looking for something different as a gift or something for your home. The price range is so great because even if you don't want to spend much you don't have to, but you can also splurge a little if you want. This is a business that carries local artist work so you should support them. read more

The store has a bunch of nice stuff, things that would make great gifts. However, the girl working there ignored me, and sat on the couch gossiping with a friend while i was there. She also loudly belched, which is fine if you're just hanging out with friends, but was super disgusting and unprofessional in this environment. I work in a similar boutique style store and customer service is a huge deal for me. I probably won't be back. read more

I am glad to have the store in the neighborhood. I'm glad to see friends of mine whose work is represented in the store. I love this shop. Their baby stuff is awesome- particularly the onesies. I can find something for people of all ages and types and genders and demeanors 90% of the time. This is a true go-to of mine. And the girl who runs the shop is a great conversationalist and it is cool sometimes when you go into the store to see her working on a project. The Philly-themed selection is outstanding. This store has a great variety of local and USA made products. It's located in a waking-friendly neighborhood which makes it more appealing and it's easily accessible. Each time I travel for work, I look for local art and tshirts. I looked all over philly for the whole week I was there and was only able to find something here my last day. I've only been here twice, but I think I've spent over $200 here so far. This place has a ridiculously awesome array of stuff you wanna get for other people and stuff you wanna get for yourself. Highlights include paper Tastykake trucks and Fishtown rowhomes, beer-glove-mitten things, and cards and prints by local artists. I got a set of Scrabble tile coasters here, a candle for a lady in my life, and a painting of two butterscotch krimpets. This place seriously rocks for gifts and stuff for your home. read more

When there are so many of these little stores you would think she would at least say hello! The stuff in there looked cute but I'll never go back, so rude. My friends got their 1st baby, I was in town from new york for a bit. Yes, this place is pretty amazing. I chat with the owner who made all the stuff. Not being a parent myself, I have no clue what to get these new mommy and daddy. She (the owner) was very helpful. I can't help myself and end up spending too much money there. Super duper cute, hip, and quirky store in South Philly. The store is filled with handmade goods that range from jewelry, to note cards, pillows, baby clothes, soaps, perfumes, and prints. Items which could be described as nerd chic, vintage-inspired, hipster, silly, and beautiful are all found here. The owner is so sweet, and the prices are typically reasonable. This place is super cute and original! They carry so many items from baby accessories/clothes to jewelry to art prints to handmade soaps/beauty products. The owner is always really nice and pleasant and is happy to tell you about all of the items she carries which are made by local artists/producers. I also overheard her talking and she said she tries to only carry items which are made in America, which is really neat and hard to find. I picked up a scrabble piece coaster for a friend the other day which he absolutely loved and thought was so original. I was looking for some candle holders that were unique and well "me". I like handmade items because they are never perfect..just like me lol. I wanted a quirky yet welcoming holder for my many candles of all sizes. I couldn't find a single one in there. I did find a pair of earrings I liked and bought at a fair price. South Philly!!! Nice Things Handmade was a high point of shopping on my trip to the East Coast this past July! I had been really sad to hear that The Black Cat had closed. It was my favorite store in Philadelphia to get things that were special, and not found at a department store, or the usual boutique. I needed a new place, and a friend of mine told me about Elissa's lovely shop called Nice Things Handmade, and I put it on my travel itinerary. Well, I have found my BC replacement! And what a great replacement it is. The shop was well laid out with a great variety of artist made wares. My husband who loathes shopping stayed in there with me for close to two hours. He even bought some cool prints to frame at home! A minor miracle. The owner is such a peach, very friendly, and entertaining. All the gifts I bought for friends have been so well received from the art prints to the heavenly soaps. I absolutely love Nice Things! I came across the shop when I first moved to Passyunk area almost 2 years ago from Queen Village. Ever since then, it is my go to place for unique gifts I can touch and feel offline. Most of the artists are local if not all, and the owner hand picks them so it definitely has a curated feel. I love that I can go in every month or 2 and there is always new stuff, but the owner tries to keep the popular items in stock as much as possible too. So glad it's in my neighborhood (although that makes it dangerous too). read more
