The facility is clean and odor-free, and pretty. The staff is friendly and attentive to both visitors and patients. They seem to really care. They're always smiling. However, they are understaffed. And the food is unappetizing. Despite the food drawback, it can be considered a suitable place for a temporary stay. Personally, I wouldn't be able to stay here due to my food allergies, as they don't seem to cater to such dietary restrictions. However, if they did and I required rehabilitation, this would be a good choice. read more

This place is terrible! My mother is currently a patient at this facility and is recovering from a broken knee. I have complained to the management about staff being 45 minutes late giving her pain medication on numerous occasions. It's always a different excuse. The person with the key to the medicine cabinet is on break. They didn't know they should wake her to give her medicine. It's shift change, and no one was available. The pharmacy forgot to order more medicine, and they're out. She's repeatedly forced to use a bedpan because staff don't respond in time to help her to the bathroom. They bring her food but no utensils. It's something new every day, but the fact that they keep leaving her in pain without her medication is just cruel. Despite repeated promises, they continue to treat her poorly. As soon as the hospital bed and wheelchair ramp are delivered to my home, we're taking her out of there. It's awful!! read more

My dad was a resident of NHC Sumner for about 6 weeks while recovering from a recent surgery. At 83 years old we were concerned about being able to care for him at home while he was so weak. The first month went very well with an excellent PT program, kind nurses and techs, and an engaging social worker. When we went to tour the facility we were so impressed that it did not smell like a nursing home. In fact, it was very much like a hotel with a receptionist and luggage carts at the front door. They even take care of laundry. Due to his condition, Dad's stay was extended which ended up being much less managed in our opinion. Without exact orders for everything from showering to PT, the staff was adamant that they couldn't do anything without a doctor's order. This is somewhat understandable, but we never even met the house doctor or PA so it was difficult to have some of our requests taken seriously. Everything went through the nurses. Our personal doctor sent in orders for his continued care but didn't realize he needed to be super specific. So the last two weeks Dad was in there he didn't do much but receive IV therapy, attend a few group activities and watch tv because we didn't realize he was no longer getting OT or PT. It wasn't the end of the world, but we felt bad he wasn't being as actively engaged as much as he initially had been. The staff was always friendly, answered our questions and spent time explaining what we needed to know. However on discharge day, after being told we needed to be out at a certain time so someone else could have the room, we found Dad sound asleep with his clothes still at the laundry and nothing ready to go. Having been in rehab after a car accident, I was expecting detailed discharge instructions for his care at home as well as having at least a walker ordered for him to take home. It was not this way at all. We got a detailed booklet about the care he received and said home health would call us. After asking for a walker they told us to just go buy one at Walmart. Since it was the weekend we had to ask for a few days worth of medical supplies until home health could make arrangements for his future needs. We had to hunt down the laundry lady ourselves to get his clean clothes. We were also given a bag with some meds in it but I had to ask for specific details on just exactly what they were. Upon explanation, it was actually a very good thing. He was leaving with 3 days worth of his daily meds already sorted into packets with the dates and times he needs to take them. That gave us time to get him settled at home and go to the pharmacy the following day. In the end the discharge process was a bit disjointed and not very well organized, which seemed a bit anticlimactic considering the high level of care we had gotten for the past six weeks. I was also disappointed they didn't even consider sending him home with any medical equipment. The food was usually good and they had a nice dining room where we could all eat together for just $6 pp. They even had servers if we needed help. My only complaint is about who is choosing some of these food options for (mostly) older residents. Parboiled vegetables are great if your young and have teeth to bite into crunchy broccoli, but not if you have dentures or no teeth at all. Who makes tough BBQ ribs or corn on the cob for 80-90 year old sick people? The food was tasty, just not always appropriate. And while we helped Dad fill out several of his menus and made notes about well cooked or soft food choices, on his own he had no idea he could write in substitutes or tell them to make him Something different. Although there is some room for improvement, none of these things would prevent us from choosing this facility again if the need arose. In fact, it would be our first choice based on care and cleanliness. They also have an assisted living section as well as a memory care section. We could even make reservations for respite care if we wanted dad to be in a safe place while we went out of town. NHC Sumner is a great facility. Just be prepared to stay on top of all of your loved one's care and ask for accommodations if necessary. They never made us feel like we were bothering them when we did, but sometimes it did take more than one visit or phone call to get the ball rolling. In their defense sometimes the hold up was our personal doctor, but sometimes it was the house doctor or they just got busy. Thank you NHC Sumner. read more
