We came here last night to check out 808 Speakerbox and instantly I fell in love with the venue. This is my type of low-key dive bar. The brick walls have a few pieces of cool artwork and the crowd is super chill. The venue is a basic rectangle, with a stage area set up in the front near the entrance. As you walk back you see a VIP area upstairs, a bar to your left, and some comfy seating to your right. I wonder how often they have actual concerts here. Also, I believe I saw Blue Moon on tap here. This just may be my replacement for the Continental Room in Fullerton :) read more

The place utilizes it's space really well, giving a good amount of space for each designated areas especially to the lounge and dance floor. The bad part about this place is that there is a tendency for the person working the sounds to not care if anything goes wrong. Throughout the concert there were issues with microphones and speakers for every performer that went on stage. I find that pretty unprofessional and advise musicians to avoid using this place as a venue. **I heard from others that the sound guy only cares about his job when it's reggae music; so if you play reggae music, use this place to perform.** read more

How the hell are you suppose to see in here? It's dark as f*ck. lol. When the lights would flash around I was able to see the exposed brick walls and the art which I loved. Next Door is held in high esteem by local college types, which has always puzzled me. The beer selection is expensive, the bartenders actually seem angry with you, and the drink prices are through the roof. Of course, this could be said about any bar in Chinatown, but $6 for Heinken Pisswasser is what we're dealing with. Decent imports-forget it. It's also usually $10 cover on a weekend, which isn't exactly very bohemian the last time I checked. Don't believe the hype about how this place is completely unpretentious and artistic. There is a cliquey feel sometimes. A lot of neon Nikes, fitted hats, white loafers, etc. I don't know it's just my poor luck, but every single time I've come down here I've only heard earsplitting house music from the DJs.. It's certainly not a bad place to have a few drinks, but isn't the mecca of taste that others would have you believe. read more

Pros: Good Bands, Funky Atmosphere, Unisex Bathrooms. Cons: Awful sound, forget about seating, FOREVER to get drinks even when it was slow, parking, neighborhood, the line for the unisex bathrooms, and the coup de grace was the bartenders attitudes. I have to say, I've had my share of snooty bartenders but after 15 minutes of waiting for a beer to be told "If you don't tip MORE you can find another bartender" and I was tipping every round ... before that. Honestly - For you to pop a cap, I need to tip more than a buck? If you like bars that LACK seating, parking, good sound, friendly bartenders, this is your spot. This place discriminates for bullshit reasons and then continued to yell at girls (I've witnessed firsthand) when their ID is real. Shitty music and shitty management who talked down to us and exhibited zero customer service. It's not a good enough club to turn people away for no reason when their club is empty. If you're a girl, be very careful there and always watch your drinks because there's little supervision when it comes to that. Take your five dollars they desperately need somewhere else. read more

Next Door is the premier venue in the Chinatown renewal. Huge space, great bar, and the sounds are always interesting. Big Dave as security is always on top of his job, keeping the drunkards and douchebags in definite check. Everyone I've read so far complains about the service but I have never had a problem getting a drink, maybe you have to present yourself in a more mature manner (keynote for all who venture in Chinatown). This is where I bring all my friends new, visiting, and old school. Great place to start the night off before heading to Bar 35, 39 Hotel(favorite), Manifest, and all the other Chinatown party spots. read more

COMPLETELY DISRESPECTED MY BEST FRIEND. She has been there many times and decided to go because it was an 18+ night and she wanted to take her 19 year old sister to a club. The bouncer claimed her ID wasn't her because her eyebrows looked different. Her ID picture was taken was she was 16 and she is now 21! She offered to go home and get her passport but they said they didn't care and wouldn't let her in if she did. We waited outside for her little sister but they wouldn't give her a refund even though she had just paid and not gone in. The bouncers insulted my friends and even the bouncers at the bar next to it explained that her ID was real but they still treated her like complete shit. Never have I seen such disrespect to such an understanding and cooperative person. Very upset and our group decided to go to BAR35 instead whom was very respectful. read more

Haven't been here in a while but it looks like it got a little upgraded. I held a few fashion shows here in the past as well as participating in a few as well. The owners and staff like most places in the district are really humble and cool. I'll be attending an event here on 11/7 for first Friday and will be judging a pin up contest so hope to see some familiar faces again. read more

Bathrooms are kinda confusing after a couple of drinks, love the couches and the New york style loft feel.....Has some great events throughout the week like fashions shows and different kind of DJ's. I have been on first Fridays only. Good crowd- great building. Line was too long and the cover charge is steep as well. The drinks are not cheap either- but hey when your out with friends its ok. I would go back for next first Friday. Sidenote: They have a VIP room upstairs for birthdays and private functions with its own DJ and bar. Mostly Bottle service upstairs but you can just walk up and hang out up there if it gets to crowded downstairs. read more

I love the look and feel of this venue but the bartenders are not very friendly. They rarely smile or seem happy to have your business. I thought it especially lame that when you ask for a water they hand you a bottled water and ask for $2. I said I wanted tap and the bartender said "We sell bottled water". Bottled water is terrible for health and the planet so I never drink it. Charge me a dollar for a glass of tap and I'm fine with that. I understand you need to make money but forcing bottled water is unnecessary and fills landfills. Eleven 44 down the street in Chinatown has a water station set up on the bar with glasses and pitchers so you can help yourself. That is a very classy way to serve your customers water needs. read more

I only come here when Bambu and Prometheous Brown come around to town. They usually have their shows here or at the Loft or just somewhere around Chinatown. They always kill it and know how to put on a show for the local hiphop crowd and community. As far as the venue goes, I can see why they call it Next Door because it's pretty much next door to a bunch of places that are within the vicinity of Hotel St. I know that they have other and different kinds of events down here but as far as local hiphop concerts go it's way better than the Loft for sure. There's a bar way in the back of the room. The stage area is right in front and it is right next to the entrance as you walk in. There's a lot of space so you are pretty much Ok with whatever and wherever you are standing and even way back in the bar. There is not too much of it but there is some seating on the side of the venue as well as by the bar area with a seating lounge. They have a large projector mounted up on the wall as a background for the stage and I guess it does add to the effect of the stage and show. The sound and acoustics is pretty good too. read more

If I still lived in Hawaii I'd probably have made this my spot. I was impressed the first time I came here. It was the night Busdriver came out to perform. Very cool atmosphere, I mean, I felt like I gained 100 cool points just for walking into the place. Hipster dark mood with lit candles. They got couches on raised platforms so if you didn't come specifically for the show you could comfortably chill with friends in the background. From the floor you can see out the raised window to the top of the surrounding buildings.. it was like you were still outside looking at the city lights. The bathroom was unisex.. I think (I can imagine dropping deauces being a nerve racking ordeal if it was!) Bartenders were awesome because it didn't seem like they were working under any rules.. it was just whatever you wanted however strong you wanted it. The only pain was the parking, which really isn't surprising, and the distance from an ATM matchine. I had to go on a twenty minute inner city journey on foot to find an ATM machine that actually worked after 8 PM. read more

So I came to this place on cinco de mayo. My roommate set her purse down in the booth (always a no-no) but she did; and it got stolen along with everything that means anything to me...cards, out of state ID, car & house keys, cash, everything. Long story short, I got cops involved and tracked down the scum that stole it. If you're ever in this club, keep an eye out for a silver storage box (something you'd keep Xmas ornaments or random stuff you store) because the people that stole our stuff had a silver storage bin that they were putting stolen things in. It baffles me that they were able to not only enter the building with a box of that sort, but also that they were able to exit the building with it which seems pretty sketchy & maybe it was an inside job. Anyways, I just wanted to warn you all, if you see a silver storage box....stay faaaaar away and keep your things very very close to you. We were only there for about 30 minutes before they left with our things. read more
