I've been meaning to come here for a while and finally made the commitment of doing so the other night on the way home from work. The doggos needed some more food and they love the artisan brands of dog food not only because they love the flavor and freshness but these specialized brands are needed so nobody's food allergies act up. When I first came in I was greeted immediate and friendly manner. I was looking for the Fromm brand of dog food which they had. Living just down the street Next to Nature has spoiled us (well, ok, our dog). However this place is so awesome, I would gladly commute if we ever move away. The staff is super friendly, and very knowledgable in the products they carry. The store features a large wide open space with concrete floors for any accidents. We get their gluten free bulk dog treats and our French Bulldog loves them. Also they carry Grandma Lucy's freeze dried pre-mix which we use to make her dog food. Which brings me to my next point, they gladly and quickly take special orders. No money up front, they will call you when it arrives. We wanted a giant bag of a specific kind of pre-mix, no problem. Before visiting this store, we visited a neighboring establishment, DawgTown. My Wife rents a space there, and utilizes the said space sparingly. Today, an employee from Next to Nature (with dreadlocks) witnessed my Wife visiting Dawg Town first. After that visit, then came into Next to Nature to buy a few dog treats (not any more than $4.00 worth). Ready to check out, the employee with the dreadlocks asks, "Do you work at DawgTown?" My Wife replied, "No, I just rent a space there." In return the employee states, "Then you are not allowed to be in this store." My Wife then says, "Why? I am not employed by DawgTown, nor am I associated with them. Whatever ill situation you may have with that establishment, I am clearly not associated with. I am a paying customer here, just like anyone else." Long story short, my Wife was kicked out from the store due to association! That is clear discrimination, a petty one at that! Do you keep track of all the customers, associates, and the general public who steps foot in DawgTown and refuse service upon entering YOUR store? I bet you don't! My Wife is a K9 Trainer, and unfortunately, has recommended Next to Nature to all her clients. But that's an easy fix, because due to the nature of association, clearly all her clients are no longer allowed to shop at Next to Nature either! The store itself is spacious and carries a large selection of natural treats and food. It's great that the floor is cemented as well for "accidents" by our fur kids! The staff are knowledgeable about the products they carry and are helpful in recommending products for your pet. The only downside that loses stars for me is that the staff hops from one customer to the next. It's fine that they acknowledge other customers in the store, however, in the midst of being helped, when they say, "Oh, I'll be right back. I need to help this customer" and goes on to help another customer in my opinion is rude. I had this occur twice while I was in the store, and had to wait for a staff member to come back to finish what I had originally asked for. read more

This is my first review on Yelp, and I'm sorry to say it's a negative one. Went in because it looked like a cute pet store in Downtown Tacoma, but felt personally harassed for taking pictures (of products, not layouts). I was looking at buying a fairly expensive hammock and wanted to show my mom before purchasing. And I was considering purchasing a small item even if I didn't get the hammock, because I like supporting small local businesses I like, and Downtown Tacoma certainly needs more business. Like another reviewer said, customer service can vary from person to person. Erin(?) was nice enough, though I wish she had told me that pictures were not allowed instead of sending over the girl with dreadlocks to do it (who then proceeded to stare at me until I put my phone away). If my hands were shaking, it wasn't because I had been caught in my secret mission from headquarters to take pictures in your store, but because one of my two dogs had just died recently and this certainly wasn't helping. Way to make a customer feel like a criminal, I felt like I had been caught shoplifting when all I wanted to do was buy cool gadgets for my remaining dog. Long story short, some unique items, and I think it's cool that there are foster cats running around everywhere. But I will be sticking to my much friendlier All The Best in Seattle for pet food and gear. And if you don't allow pictures, put up a sign. Zero stars if I could. Used to love coming here when we were in the area... But after today, I have never felt so upset on the phone! Terrible customer service. If something isn't working out for me, especially a high ticket item... I should be able to return it, as it was a safety issue. I guess you have 30 days in order to return an item and it have had the item for two months....Anyway, what I've learned from this is that Next to Nature could care less about the safety of our pets. The girl I spoke with was rude, unprofessional and not understanding. Apparently she was the one who sold me the kennel and told me that it would work fine in the back of our truck... Then tells me that I've had it too long and that it's too bad that it isn't working out for me. Was not apologetic, just condescending. We will never shop here again....and let everyone else we know to not come here. read more

I'm really glad that we have this type of pet supply store in Tacoma, WA. It's like Whole Foods for pets. I have a finicky cat who won't eat wet food because she's convinced I'm slipping her medicine. So when the vet asked that I slip her some medicine, I went to Next to Nature and asked what kind of food would my cat not be able to resist. And the employee recommended Tiki Cat saying that the many resident cats at the store really "dig it." Sure enough, my cat polished off the whole can in one sitting - along with her medicine - mwah ha ha ha. Employees here know the product and are more than happy to help make sure you end up with what works best for your pet. The employees here are the nicest people I have had the pleasure of doing business with. They clearly love animals. Anyone who would fault this store for conducting itself ethically obviously does not get it and should just go somewhere else. read more

Awesome staff, good prices and great selection ( the resident house cats are also a definite bonus for an animal lover like myself.) I love that they are open on weekends because parking has literally been at the front door for me whenever I've gone (always on the weekend). I particularly love their selection of natural treatments as one of my cats and one of my dogs have recently had different but simultaneous health issues. I truly appreciate the staff who helped me (sorry I'm terrible with names). She listened to my concerns, then helped me find just what I needed for both (woot woot!). The staff are always very helpful, friendly and knowledgeable. Their kind demeanor and authentic love of animals make this place king in my book. Only been here once, but it was enough! My cat had a case of worms that even a visit to the vet wouldn't cure. With one recommendation from a very nice girl who worked here, twenty bucks later the kitty was cured. Why didn't I get this miracle treatment from the vet, for $60? Plus I have two pills left over if she ever gets worms again! Really nice environment, pretty much everything your pet could ever need, plus some stuff you had no idea they needed. But I would try whatever they recommended...very knowledgeable and friendly staff, clean store. Plus the shop cats are adorable. :) read more

The employees and atmosphere were great -- the place deserve 5 stars just for them -- the selection was decent from the wandering we did -- though for a store of its square footage, I somehow expected it to be better stocked...but I can't put my finger on what was lacking, really. The prices seemed a bit high to my wife and I though, so if I could, I'd give it 4.5 stars, but alas, so it goes. Excellent place! My vet recommended me here, and it was a darn good recommendation! Next to Nature carries Oxbow brand hays, food, and toys only!!! Timothy and Orchard grass in 40 oz bags, and even small bags of MEADOW GRASS HAY!! My rabbit is a picky stinker and will only eat soft Orchard and Meadow! So I stocked up on a few bags of Meadow! The worker was kind enough to hold my bags at the register while I looked around! The workers are so friendly! The place is huge! I will certainly be going back for more meadow grass hay!! read more

Next to Nature is hands down, my favorite pet supply place in T-town. Amazing selection of natural and organic pet food, great toys, sweet store cats and amazing staff. Check out the Organix brand and the catnip spray...now if only they would start carrying all-natural HUMAN treats! I love shopping at Next to Nature because they have so many high quality products and foods. I found a hard food and canned food that is doing perfect for my dog who has a ton of allergies. I got so much information from the sales rep. and she spent so much time with me, she also showed me a lot of dog food products to help me make my decision. She didn't just show me one and say it would work and walk away like most sales reps. have done at Petsmart/Petco in the past. I felt very welcome in the store and found the perfect dog food products. I am very pleased with my experience. I called and was req. info on cat flea meds. The guys seemed a little "uneducated" on the products but was friendly and was willing to get answers so that was nice. I did have to laugh at the end because I was told "they aren't allowed to give out pricing over the phone." Of course after making the trip & going in... I found out why....they are WAY OVER Priced! I swore I wrote a review but I guess I am getting old. Deja and Lisa rock as far as help. Lisa knows everything about dogs & Deja is the same with cats but they're both great. Lisa is no longer there but Deja is and she can help you with anything. Just ask, but try not to be one of those 'crazy' animal people that ramble on about what dress they should put on their dog or, "my cat keeps looking at me weird at 3 pm...what does it mean?" they have better things to do. And the last time I did that I realized how annoying it is. The only bad thing about this place is the price of food has gone up TOO much. read more

I absolutely loved this store. I love my dog, like most dog owners do, and I am not about to feed him some over-processed crap full of unhealthy fillers just because it's cheap. I love that there are options out there that provide health-conscious pet owners with good quality food for their pets and eco-friendly toys. This store is rather large and very spacious, which helps when there are multiple dogs browsing along with their owners. It keeps shelf spillage to a minimum. They have all the good brands of dog food, Innova, Wellness, Healthwise and they have a fantastic selection of toys, my favorites being the ones from West Paw but now we own every one. The staff was helpful and friendly and seemed to remember previous customers. They even offered Rally a couple lamb treats, and we got a big paws up from him. He was a happy boy after a new toy and some treats. read more

Super cool stuff but was put off by the woman working there. Definitely would've bought a few things but I wanted my husbands input since he didn't have time to go to a pet store. Our dog is turning 9 tomorrow so he asked me to get her something, she's his baby and I wanted to include him but they wouldn't let me take photos of some adorable hand knit coats. Good thing there are plenty of other pet stores in Tacoma with just as cute things. Not sure I'll go back, could take it or leave it. It is close to my work though so that's the only bummer. I finally gave in and started buying cat food for Butters at this cavernous monstorsity of a pet vanity store (I use this term jokingly because they really do know their stuff and take care of pets with expertise). It upsets me that I now spend four times as much on pet foot as I used to when I would by Purina or whatever, but Butters seems to like it better and is looking as healthy as ever. I totally understand that it's never really an easy purchase to justify since your cat or dog can't really "tell" you which food it prerfers, but if you've got a little extra to spend on your furry friends, take it here, and beware - the delicous looking cookies aren't made for people =D read more

I went in for the first time tonight and it might be my Graceland. I have fallen down every black hole in the internet researching pet food and NTN exceeded expectations. My pups eat raw when I have money and after an unfortunate incident involving a cow heart I decided to check this place out. I knew what I was looking for when I went in but checked out everything. Price: reasonable. Don't get me wrong it's expensive for you pet to eat well, but they had the basics as well as the bells and whistles. Staff: awesome! I was greeted upon entering even though all visible staff were busy. As soon as they were finished I was asked if I needed any help. Not in a pushy way. I was left alone after that. When I had a question it was answered immediately and clearly without an attempted upsell. Products: from what I could see all products were of a high quality AND useful. There is a relatively small non food selection and every product looked durable. Local when possible and they were willing to order products that fit with their business ethics. Atmosphere: adorable and country store-ish without feeling fake or gimmicky. The foster cats were all super calm and allowed me and my dog to approach. They are loose in the store so use discretion when bringing your pup. I will definitely go back in the future. read more

I love this place. The resident and adoptable cats are very charismatic and the staff have always been kind and helpful. This is my favorite place to shop for cat food and treats for neighbor dogs, although I buy these products from several different sources. Prices tend to be more reasonable than other natural pet food shops around town. It's a very spacious shop, so it's less stressful to move around, browse and shop than at other stores in general. I recommend going out of your way to visit if you haven't already - it's not in a shopping center, which makes going there a little more of a special trip, but it's worth it. read more

Great selection of yummy healthy food for your pets. They really do care...just ask and they more then helpful when it comes to food, treats or care for your animal. Just a warning...they tend to dislike traditional medications for your pets...I know I hate feeding my dog pills for medical issues..or pouring chemicals on her back for fleas ..and if you ask they will try to find an alternative "natural" way to help your pet...but be warned they are not Vets...my dog was having unknown extream pain in her neck 4+ years ago and I was looking at getting her on glucosamine or something along those lines and they did refer me to an acupuncture lady in Federal Way for my dogs neck...long story short...she had a herniated disk in her neck and needed surgery - which she got - but I almost felt like a horrible pet owner for having my dog on prednisone prior to her $1,000 catscan and $4,000 surgery....If I'm asking it means I do care...I just hate that sometimes these holistic pet people frown that you are using conventional medicine when sometimes its a necessity and make me feel like I'm a horrible pet owner..when I think I'm a pretty damn good pet lover! You can bring your pet in...but make sure it likes cats..because there's normally a few of them running around in the shop up for adoption. I use to get the "porky pumpers" (pig hearts) there for my dog..I know.. I know...they looked like beef jerky..and then one day I asked what they were...and wished I never had...but my dog LOVES them...but they stopped carrying them...but now they have them back!!! Woot woot !! Your dog will LOVE them!! I also love the bulk doggie cookies you can buy buy weight...I like to mix them up, carrot, charcoal mint, peanut butter, little heart shaped ones. ...its a real treat for my lab...shes goes crazy when she sees me walking in to the house with a brown paper bag!! They can be a bit pricey..on normal things like dog food....so if you own a dog...I would try them out for the bulk dog treats while you shop around or check out the prices. I have heard that they do have cheaper prices when it comes to more specialty foods like dehydrated chicken and sweet potato food/snacks. Its a pet lovers must..just ask my dog :o) read more

Staff is well informed and pleasant, extensive selection of healthy dog and cat foods. Store is roomy (the space was previously occupied by a furniture store) and comfortable to shop in. They have always incitefully answered any questions that I have asked. They are also very ethically oriented towards the pet population and related charitable functions.
