NEXT High School is a whole different kind of school! This is a place where kids are challenged academically while also encouraged to pursue their passions and use those to impact their community even before they graduate! I've seen Peers (students) who would never associate in a school of 100+ become good friends and support each other in amazing ways! If your student loves experience-based learning and you want to see them grow into a community-minded young man or woman this is a great option. I've had the pleasure of working here for a year now, after 15 years in the traditional public school classroom, and I can honestly say it's one of the most caring professional group of educators I've ever been a part of! My daughter started at Next High School their inaugural year. She just graduated a week ago. She was in public schools (Fork Shoals & Ralph Chandler) until the seventh grade. She did online schooling with Connections her eighth grade year. A friend told me about Next and we looked into it. It has been the best decision for us. I saw a child who had problems with picking up the phone and making appointments to one who has no problems picking up the phone calling businesses for donations. Her confidence has grown. She has started her own business. She has come out of her shell. The pros care and let the kids work on their own. I love the entrepreneurial spirit of Next. However, I do not think that it is for every student. Students need to be self starters and can work on their own. The pros treat the students like adults. Students are held accountable. Our son just graduated from NEXT High School as part of the inaugural class. His three years here were amazing. He was challenged and encouraged to not only do his best in his state required subjects, but to think outside the box and pursue the things that interest him. He was given the opportunity to explore which helped him to decide which area of study to work toward in college. He was held to a standard that prepared him for life beyond high school. This high school was the best opportunity I could have asked for for my daughter. As a middle school student, she told me she wanted high school teachers who care about her learning as opposed to having assignments pushed at her like a list of items to check off. At NEXT, she had freedom to develop her own interests and work with her peers to set and achieve their own group goals with community impact projects. The support network for students is impressive. NEXT has been a great fit for our son. A gifted student he has longed for the kind of mutual respect shown between peers and pros at NEXT. The creativity of the pros and the time devoted to pursuing interests in i3 and breakouts has greatly enhanced what would otherwise be slogging through graduation requirements in anticipation of college and life after high school. This school has changed my daughter's life. She went from not liking school at all to being sad that school was out for summer. Every day that I'd pick her up from school, she had the biggest smile on her face. I'd ask why she was so smiley - and she'd respond, "I just love my school." We have been at Next High School since the beginning. The progress the school has made in 3 years is amazing. Principle Rick has really taken the school up to the level of the most competitive schools in the state. We couldn't be happier. My kids love it there. They are becoming well prepared for college, but even more importantly, they are becoming well prepared for life. Great school, fantastic concept and some of the best teachers and administrators I've ever worked with. You can feel how different it is the second you walk in, observing how the kids and teachers (Peers and Pros) treat each other like it's a collaboration vs a hierarchy. We have appreciated the Pros who taught our son this year, for both their high level of interest and expertise in their specific subject matter, as well as the various ways in which they sought to connect with and teach our son. My son has attended next for 2 years and we love it! The Pros treat him with respect and allow indeed thinking. He is taught life experiences along with academics. NHS is an excellent charter school where teachers and staff encourage students to become successful. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a smaller venue without the focus on sports.
