A great place to train. I love it! Lots of classes, great instructors, and a great facility. I train MMA for love of sport, cardio and exercise generally. I'm a novice. This place is good for that but is great for the young guys that are truly making a go at a career in the sport. The young thirsty guys add to energy and vibe of this place. Instructors are extremely knowledgeable, patient, and above all supportive. Makes me smile thinking about the instructors walking around during sparring with direction and positive energy and feedback. This place has been open for a while and has been producing champions and professional grade martial artists. My guess is that many more champions will be born here over the years and that this place will receive more and more recognition globally as an MMA institution that produces the best out there! This is by far the most impressive MMA gym in Texas. I wish I found this place earlier. The quality of teaching at this gym is second to none, and you get to learn from the legend Chris Brennan. There is a class at almost all times that can conveniently fit into whatever schedule you have. When I first began training a long time ago the MMA scene in Dallas wasn't too big. There were really only a handful of options and to be frank many were just former traditional schools that tacked on MMA or BJJ to stay relevant and did, as one would expect, a pretty piss poor job of understanding let alone teaching this new fangled thing called "MIXED MARTIAL ARTS." Your options were limited and although there were some really great schools it could be difficult to say the least to find something that clicks. So I find it fitting that a gym like Next Generation opened in Dallas because in many ways it brought the next generation of what martial arts is becoming. Was this a cheesy and clumsy metaphor? Perhaps but what did you expect from a reviewer whose hobby includes being punched in the head? But I digress, the point I am making is Next Gen is a bit of fresh air in the Dallas martial arts scene. There are some great schools in D-Town, including some top notch exceptional MMA gyms but one of the best things I like about Next Gen is their approach to teaching grappling specifically, which sets them apart. In my experience as a lifelong martial artist and self proclaimed martial arts nerd, grappling can be one of the most intimidating, grueling, misunderstood, and dare I say unappealing martial arts for a newbie to learn who is unfamiliar with how truly awesome grappling is. It doesn't quite have the "wow" or "cool" factor say breaking a board or kicking someone in the dome that say traditional or striking arts have. The basics are less obvious, less flashy, and often less fun to learn. Which for many make the incentive less appealing and the drop off rate high. Plus who in their right mind wants to roll around with sweaty and possibly stinky people in their free time? However Chris Brennan and his staff's approach to breaking down the sweet sweet art of grappling will quickly make grappling one of your favorite passions that no amount of smelly sweaty people can ever take away from you. They offer many great classes taught at a high level at Next Gen, including boxing and muay thai/kickboxing but to me the piece de resistance is their grappling of course, specifically their beginner class that is worth mentioning over and over again. They have a way of explaining and covering the basics for beginner grapplers and even seasoned vets alike that really makes learning a treat instead of a chore. As someone whose martial arts career began with hitting things and was by god hell bent on ending it with that, Chris's way of teaching just had that CLICK moment I mentioned earlier. I have tried many times in the past to get myself amped about BJJ or grappling. I enrolled in many classes and spent a fair amount of time on the mat but for whatever reason I always just lost interest. I just felt it wasn't for me. My teachers were all great and teaching similar material (BJJ) but for whatever reason it didn't stick. I mention this because like many people I am sure can relate, sometimes the material can be right but without that right teacher sometimes it just doesn't click. Next Gen's approach was just different and finally gave me that AHA! Epiphany moment that made me love grappling. It's almost like when you eat something different or unfamiliar and develop an acquired taste for it that eventually becomes something you love to have, something that yelp reviews really help with. =P And Next Gen's classes did that for me. I started in the beginner's like everyone does and eventually made my way to the open classes. Instructors such as the awesome Josh Ruff just had a great way of helping you understand grappling without the usual sink or swim baptism by fire method at many grappling schools. Which I greatly appreciate because it helped build real applicable knowledge and confidence that as a newbie really goes along way if one wants to start rolling or take their training further. Everyone has an ego and most don't like getting schooled or embarrassed. Something that grappling does a great job of, but at this gym there are no egos on the mat nor in the instructing which really goes a long way to helping teach those new to grappling. Although I ended up moving out of state and thus was unable to train there anymore, my time there was invaluable and gave me the confidence to realize that grappling is something I really enjoy. I even got into wrestling through that gym, another incredibly grueling skill and story for another day, that I continue to pursue now. Something I wouldn't had it not been for Next Gen. Go there. I brought my 7yo son here from another spot where we were at for about 3 years. The other spot had so many kids and instructors my son stopped progressing after a while. Here the instructors actually walk around and instruct you. He's learned so much here in the short time he's been here. The instructor Coach Phat is great with the kids. He doesn't coddle the kids. My son actually listens to him in the tournaments. I'm so impressed at how much my son has learned in the little time he's been here. My son is excited to come to practice. He gets jujitsu, muy Thai and wrestling all included. Worth the money! read more

The ONLY reason why i gave this 2 stars is because we actually came back after a pretty good impression the 1st trial of youth wrestling (for my 5 year old). My kid has never wrestled before, but we decided to give it a try since my brother & dad both wrestled in HS & college. My kid's 1st time here went pretty well...there was a little kid there about my kid's age, Brody, who was SUPER helpful and took my kid under his little wing. I thought that was pretty cool. He practiced the rest of the week until Sunday which was another "Youth Wrestling Session" at 2:30pm. We were going to decide if we were going to stick with this gym or try another one. The "youth" wrestling program is pretty much like open gym. It isn't by skill level, they kinda just throw all the kids in one class & expect them to learn that way without any REAL instruction. The other kids who were more advanced seemed to be okay with it, obviously. Then here is why I couldn't give more than 2 stars: I walked up to their little "front desk" and asked the guy who was sitting there if there were going to be younger kids joining since i didn't see any.. majority of them were probably 10+ years old. His response: "I don't know, I just own the place" & then when I proceeded to ask him if he could see if the coach knew anything, he looked back where they were having practice, yelled to the coach about the younger kids & the coach replied with "I think chuck is coming", looked at my kid, shook his head & said "oh...no" Umm...??? Just a heads up for people checkin this gym out that have younger kids...I don't think this gym caters to the younger crowd. I also don't think that this gym cares about bad reviews... the owner doesn't seem to care much... "he just owns the place" read more

I walked in by myself asking about training for my kids. Staff was very friendly and informative. No pressure and I felt welcome. They offered to have them come in free the next day and train to see what they thought. I brought my 8 year old and he loved it. Great teachers, clean facility, great area for parents to read or work on laptop and still see their kids. After the trial training, still no pressure to sign up, invited us back again to check it out more. I am not an athlete myself so I am usually not comfortable in these places. But this truly was a pleasant experience and I would highly recommend checking this place out. read more

There are very few BJJ instructors and even fewer MMA instructors in the Metroplex as experienced as Chris Brennan. The guy was in UFC 16 for God's sake! The kids class top notch and there are nothing but killers on the mat in the adult classes. There Sunday open mat is amazing. Really wanted to join the gym for my son. Did 2 trials, but no one cared we where even there and did not make my son feel like they even wanted him there. After each trial no questions, no how did you like it or even thank you for coming. I walked away feeling we were not wanted. Owner just stayed on his phone the whole time texting.
