There are very few BJJ instructors and even fewer MMA instructors in the Metroplex as experienced as Chris Brennan.

But if you are looking for a place to sharpen your character while you sharpen your skills, Sharpen Iron Academy (SIA) in Plano is in a league of its own. At SIA, you aren't just a number; the professors know you by name and are genuinely vested in your success both on and off the mat. This is a culture of discipline, accountability, and mentorship where the "iron sharpens iron" philosophy is lived daily. Whether it's the kids' classes, the youth program, or the specialized women-only classes, there is a deep level of trust and a guaranteed safe space for every student. It is more than a gym--it is a community and a family where you are pushed to grow in a supportive, high-level environment.

Their Godfather helped me research studios and after reading the CV for their head instructor Professor Henrique it was time to give it a shot. They had a lot of fun during the trial class, but they were nervous to start, not wanting to be away from Mom even though I was only three feet off the mat. Thankfully SIA instructors are not only skilled at keeping students engaged during training, but are very family centered, patient and caring. They were able to connect with each one of my kiddos so that they felt comfortable training as I looked on. By parent teacher conferences in February their preschool teacher let me know that both had grown so much in maturity and confidence and was curious to know what I was doing differently. Almost two years later the twins are well adjusted, focused and always happy when they step off the mat after an hour training session. Professor Henrique, Professor Lucas, Professor Matheus, Coach Queila, Coach Enrique, Coach Ian, Coach Ella, and Coach Anthony have become family and there is no other place I would have my children be twice a week. They offer adult classes in the morning and evening and several of the parents after seeing the transformation in their own children have started to earn their stripes as well.

[Update - 2026]: Still 5 stars. I'm writing this because I feel compelled to clear up some…read moremisconceptions I've read about their competition team. As a parents with two of my kids enrolled here and is at the gym mostly every practice for their competition team, my experience has been the opposite. The jiu-jitsu instruction for the youth competition team is exceptional. The lead instructor for the competition team is a phenomenal educator who knows how to connect with kids - something that isn't guaranteed in most coaches. The coaches go out of the way to ensure students feel supported and challenged in a structured environment. The competition kids are well prepared and the team as a whole performs well at various competitions they attend (even out of state comps). To suggest that the training is stagnant is simply inaccurate - the growth we've see in the youth competition team every month, every year is proof in our eyes of a high-level, evolving curriculum. Most importantly, their program doesn't just produce "winners", but well-rounded kids who respect the sport and respect each other. It's disappointing to see a gym that puts so much heart and effort into its students be described as anything less than professional. Come see the beginner classes for yourself.

We trained at Warriors for about three years, staying primarily because of the kickboxing program…read more During that time, the jiu-jitsu instruction was led by a young trainer who did not hold a black belt, which we believe should be the foundation of any serious jiu-jitsu gym. Classes were also often very small, and had limited individual attention and coaching often helpers were kids also. Our son started at a young age and progressed quickly, including competing successfully on his own when the gym did not yet have a youth competition team. When a competition team was later introduced, there was limited structure and coaching support at tournaments despite additional fees. This is a contact sport and injuries do happen, but we felt our son was sometimes singled out rather than supported, and favoritism appeared at times. Without consistent high-level coaching and strong competition, youth athletes can stagnate rather than continue to grow. We made good friends at Warriors and appreciate parts of the experience. With time and more seasoned instructors, Warriors could become a strong place for kids to train. For now, we chose to move on to a gym that better aligned with our goals. I recommend trying the free classes and comparing with other gyms before deciding. Warriors will continue to lose kids to other gyms with a more robust training program which it already has.

He is very technical and informative. He knows how important it is to build a good foundation to prevent injuries and roll safely. Children do well in his program because it is structured. He has taught my daughter focus & discipline! The school itself is incredibly clean. Restrooms are extremely clean! Very nice mats! Nicely ventilated space! I highly recommend this school for both children and adults interested in jiu jitsu. I can't say enough great things about Professor Inacio and his school. We cannot wait to return.

Dan A. McKinney, TX…read more Jan 6, 2024 I began training with Professor Inacio and his most excellent coaches when I had accumulated 68.5 years of mileage in life. That ain't as big a number as it may sound like. I was surprised that my wife for those decades was supportive of my beginning at such a school. I assumed then that her enthusiasm had something to do with a large life insurance policy on me that was in effect at that time, 2.5 years ago. The policy is lapsed, and she is still supportive, so maybe not. I am not a fast learner in this domain, but I am a learner. Sometimes I can even coach a move or two with my workout partners. Usually, I'm the hapless nail, rarely the hammer. This is not a bad thing. It is necessary. The people who show up and continue to show up to train seem to me to define a psychographic group that is a group that you benefit by being close to. Do hard things and keep doing them. Then do them some more. Then do them some more. Special people congregate here. Right here. Things change while practicing this discipline. For me, positively but slowly. For normal people, positively but much more quickly. This is the place to train and to get as effective as situations may require you to be later.

So when you go out to eat, you have choices. Do you want fast food or fine dining?…read more That same choice of quality and value occurs when choosing a martial arts school. Hey... you can get some fast food styled martial arts, have someone rush you or your kids through the motions and throw different colored belts at you to make you feel like something is happening. OOOORRRRRRR You can go to a high quality school that actually teaches multiple disciplines and builds a skill that can be used for a lifetime. Neither choice is wrong depending on your goals. For our kids, we wanted them to really learn something. We wanted them to earn their increases in rank. We wanted them to learn traditional fighting as well as ground fighting. We wanted superior quality in the instructors. We wanted a nurturing environment (not a bunch of Cobra Kai "sweep the leg" maniacs). Samurai Inti specializes in HIGH QUALITY instruction. Kids and adults alike will learn from these amazing instructors. I cannot recommend them highly enough.

I talked with Mr. Sabastian on the phone and scheduled a face-to-face free 30 minutes orientation. I explained my goals and why I chose Muay Thai/ Kick Boxing. Mr. Sebastian recommended I try a class and decide. he said I can attend as many classes as I want, free of charge, and then decide if I want to join or not. I knew then that Samurai International cares about teaching martial arts and they care about the students and not just making money. I tried the Muay Thai class, I loved it, and signed up the following week. About the classes, we have three Muay Thai classes a week. each class has a different instructor. we learn different things in each class but after a few classes, you start feeling how everything complements each other and end up being this nice flow. We do stretches, warms ups, shadow boxing, bag work, pad work, sparring drills, and advance student spar. Every class is different, fun, and challenging. The instructors respect and care about every single student and students respect and care about each other. It's a great supportive learning environment. So, if you are interested in learning martial arts to lose weight, get in shape, or want to compete. This is the place for you, all levels are welcome, and I highly recommend you give it a shot.
