We had a really hard, frustrating and short lived experience with this school. My son (4) joined in June '21 because we'd moved too far from the daycare he'd been at since 18months. At first sight, the school seemed like a good fit. The owner, Dipak, gave us a tour and he seemed nice. We didn't meet the teacher prior to enrolling because I'd heard such amazing things about other Goddard locations. The problems started Day 1. I called to speak with the teacher reiterate that my son shouldn't take naps, and that he needs encouragement with the potty. His teacher was incredibly rude to me. Told me that all the children nap, basically tough luck. We communicated this with the director, Beth, (who as an aside, Is a super sweet caring lady we really liked, if only everyone else there was like that), and we worked out that we would send in a little bag of toys every day to have my son play with during nap time. We don't think it worked, he was never tired at the end of the day, and more than once he told us his teacher told him not to tell us he slept. (Who knows what's true with a 4 year old but when he wouldn't even fall asleep during a car ride at 9 pm, we felt pretty confident he was napping.) Next was the TV- we asked him what his favorite part of the day was and he excitedly told us "when we watched the episode of Peep and the Big Wide World." I was shocked, I'd never heard of a school playing show for the kid. I was told it's just during transition times and said it was fine but obviously a surprise and not our preference. Then a few weeks later my son started telling us "How come you don't let me watch shows at school?" Or "Miss Ornela lets the other kids watch shows but not me." He started regressing in potty training and still to this day tells us about how mean the teachers were when he had accidents. At a pick up, my partner asked if he had an accident and in front of our son, his teacher very harshly and abruptly said "it's not an accident, this kid simply isn't potty trained." He came home one time in tears so hungry, telling me that the teacher wouldn't let him eat his snacks (he still had snacks in his lunchbox). I personally saw how the staff spoke to the children at pick up and got a weird vibe. Lots of harsh commands, short tempers, something was off. And we tried to communicate all or most of these issues with management. Beth certainly tried her best to help, but the owner never did. And nothing every changed. He only lasted the summer here before we moved him to a Montessori school in the next town. Just 2.5 weeks in, he's falling asleep at 7:30, loving going to school, has had no accidents at school, is eager to go every morning, and even had some good speech progression (his new teacher helped him finally say Fs). The saddest part for us is he keeps telling us how awesome it is that "the teachers at the new school are actually nice."

This place truly is non representative of a diverse culture, and the world we live in. I was appauled to know that one of the teachers, whom have been there for over 10+ years made a racist statement to another staff, only for this staff member to notify me. What makes matters worse, is that the owner minimizes the parents concerns and makes excuses for her staff's behavior. The staff is fantastic. They're all very competent, patient, and loving. My older child has a flair for the dramatic, but they handle her sometimes grandiose tantrums calmly and lovingly. They have a very stable staff; remarkably low turnover compared to most program. This was very important to me. When your children spend close to 30 hours a week somewhere, it needs to feel safe, secure, comfortable. High levels of turnover would make that impossible. My children are very attached to their teachers. The curriculum at the center is exemplary. They use a lot of targeted play that allows children to learn and develop skills while enjoying themselves. For example, in any given day, my kids look forward to playing in the sensory table ( filled with anything from coffee beans to shaving cream), the imaginative play area (that is set up as a grocery store this week and a doctor's office the next), outside on the play ground, taking a field trip to the post office, having the music lady / yoga lady / tumble bus come, meeting in small groups to work on counting skills, and more. Another feature that was very important to me when I was selecting a center was NAEYC accreditation. It's hard to compare programs; you should be able to hear positive things about any center, and it's hard to know you found a good one until you're already entrenched. But NAEYC accredited programs are relatively few. This accreditation was important to me for two reasons. A) you can't get that accreditation unless your curriculum is up to the association's high standards, and B) it is a lot of work to get and maintain, and thus shows that the center believes that "good enough" really isn't good enough; that they want excellence. The program is top-notch. I adore BY. Even more importantly, my children adore BY. More days than not, my daughter is disappointed when I come to pick her up. I hear "No, I'm not ready to go. We're just about to read another story/go outside/dance/ play in the imaginative play area." For me, that says everything.

My son started at the Red House Academy when he was 2 years, 8 months. I wanted to get some more socialization going for him as soon as I could. I was excited to hear that they would start him as a toddler, then transition him to the preschool program at 2 years, 9 months... The official MA preschool age. So, he has been attending for 7 months, 2 mornings a week (right thru the summer). Despite frequent staff changes, I think they are doing a really good job. It is a new business, so I think it's evolving. There is a new director, Kay, she is friendly and outgoing. One of the toddler teachers Jenna was recently promoted to Assistant Director. I like them both very much. My family has had schedule craziness and they've been totally accommodating. The toddler "daycare" teachers seem very competent, clearly love the kids and smile a lot. I personally think that's important, to bring your kids to school to a place where the staff aren't hating life. There is a new preschool teacher, Ms. G. Recently she told us she was fine with it if we wanted to try big boy undies at school. She assured us that she would encourage our son to go every hour. At the end of that first day we had no accidents at school... Because she wasn't afraid of the possibility of having to clean up accidents. I thought that was pretty awesome. In the short time Kay has been the director, there is a private FB page up & running where you can see pictures and videos and get info. Recently added is a link where you can get specific info about your own kid's day. Speaking of privacy & safety, the staff is very much aware of safety issues. Except for pickup and dropoff times the doors are locked. It's a small school so the staff knows who is picking up the kids and who is unusual. They made me sign a form it it was ok to take my son's picture and post on the FB page. They understand that being a parent is hectic and it's easy to forget stuff. I appreciate that they typically give lots of advance notice for anything we are supposed to remember and repeated reminders. Most importantly, my son is happy when I pick him up from school and he is learning. They have a lot of diversity in their day, different activities, crafts, writing, reading, free play time both inside and on the playground. They take little group walks on the back roads behind they school. On hot summer days they can bring swimsuits sometimes and get to go in the sprinkler. I feel like the teachers and staff are working hard to make sure that the kids aren't bored. Also, the school is extremely clean. I would recommend it! But word is getting out, so join fast. Our daughter has been in home care, so I felt this was a good preschool to transition, a more structure setting, but small enough to not be overwhelming. Their schedule and hours are flexible enough to work with my commute to/from Boston daily that also was hugely important. The Director, Ms. Ashita, has been lovely to deal with, her attitude and presence made me feel much more comfortable as a first time mom. Ms. Thelma is very engaging with the children, and seems to work well with them individually based on their personality and needs. Red House thus far has been great, and we look forward to watching our daughter grow and learn new things.
