Sausage, egg, and cheese with hash browns

The General Store is located in a old-fashioned wooden stand-alone building in the center of town. The store is the site of much activity, with young families, construction crews, and retired residents enjoying the relatively inexpensive sandwiches and opportunity to see others in the neighborhood. There are a few outdoor and indoor cafe tables available. The hot sandwiches are named for different locations in Newtown. The Castle Hill -- composed of baked ham, honey mustard, and melted Swiss on grilled thin rye bread -- was perfectly proportioned. It proved to be one of those dining experiences in which a menu item is elevated to become your only choice because you can't imagine other items can be as good! A plethora of beverages and side snacks are available to complement the sandwiches. I returned for breakfast-- also relatively low priced -- and was surprisingly disappointed. I tried a sausage, egg, and cheese sandwich with an added hash brown, replicating what I had enjoyed at Sticks N Stones cafe in Mansfield, Connecticut. I also tried one of the coffee urns. The taste for both was oily and there was an odd aftertaste. In addition the bun appeared to have been pulled from cool storage and offered an unanticipated and negative contrast to hot contents. I recommend the Newtown General Store for quick lunchtime sandwiches at a reasonable price. Something to keep in mind... despite being a General Store they are closed on Mondays.

    Sirloin steak sandwich

My daughter and I found this place while in town shopping for Prom dresses (Sabrina Style- great boutique). It has a nice, historic atmosphere and they offer a decent sized menu of breakfast items and a wide variety of sandwiches. That was in June. It is now July and we've returned several times for their great sandwiches. We are currently hooked on their sizzlin' sirloin steak sandwich with melted Monterey Jack cheese, lettuce, tomato, and ranch dressing. It's amazing. I took half of mine back home for my husband and as he took a bite, his eyes got big and he said "where the heck did you get this sandwich?! I think it's the best steak sandwich I've ever had!" So there you go.

Quaint general store with a deli. Awesome sandwiches and many good snacks to choose from. They also sell local products. Very impressed with this place and sandwich hit the spot.

I love a good town general store! You can still get two good sandwiches, chips, a giant croissant and a drink for two for 20$ here! Amazing. Good sandwiches and a cute little place to enjoy them, inside or out! Great place for breakfast sandwiches or lunch, highly recommend if your in the area.

The most nostalgic place in newtown. A great place for brunch/lunch with the fam. Would recommend for lunch on rainy days.

Steve who was working Friday night provided answers to every question I had including on recreating the porchetta my in-laws would do every Thanksgiving. I needed to find a butcher who could get me a fresh ham, remove the bone, and remove the fat cap but keep it in tact so I could wrap the pork back in it after seasoning. He said they could do it all but also discussed options if I wanted to do a 6 lb porchetta vs a 20+ pounder. He even gave me a history lesson on the Boston pork butt. I then started with questions on beef short plate ribs and rib roasts and chuck eye. Well after talking about marbling on the long short ribs in the case (not the Littles usually in super markets) I bought two for dinner on Saturday. I smoked them for about 6 hours. They were so tender and delicious. By far much cheaper than most BBQ places that charge $50 per rib. My friend, John, who shops there often picked up a a pot roast for saturday dinner. He said it was like butter. So if you get a chance stop in and pick up some meat or house made hot dogs or sweet and hot italian sausage.

Customers were coming in to pick up their meat orders. The deli area offers a variety of cold and hot sandwiches, salads, sides. Great selection. I ordered a roast beef and Swiss on a hard roll, with coleslaw and horseradish sauce. It was fantastic! The meat was flavorful and plentiful and that homemade slaw added a great little kick. They also have baked breads and goodies. I left with a sourdough bread and a choc chip cookie. There are some tables outside to eat. They also sell unwashed, unrefrigerated chicken eggs from a local farm. So great! I did buy these, but somehow they didn't make it into my bag which I did not discover until I got home, but other than that, service was super friendly and helpful. So refreshing to have quality customer service. The store is well organized, nicely decorated, and extremely clean. I recommend a stop in and I will make a point to return as soon as possible.

Today I brought my husband in based on pics of their pizza from reviews on Facebook. We ordered a large Hot Oil Pie, and Garlic Knots to eat there. Then a large cheese pizza to take home. In addition I had an iced carmel salted latte one there ,and it was so good I took one to go. On top of it the family that owns Dodingtown were just as friendly and welcoming as the first time I came into their business. Now lets start with the iced salted carmel latte so creamy, and refreshing but not too sweet. The garlic knots have sliced pieces of garlic, nice plump dough, and the sauce was to me perfect! The hot oil pie if you like HOT this is your pizza. The peppers used on this pizza are green chill peppers, and red italian long peppers. These peppers together bring the heat. The crust is thin and crispy, and the sauce is a delightful homemade sauce. You can tell their pizza is made with the best ingredients. Dodgingtown is a local business You want to know from their sandwiches, pizza, baked goods, coffees, teas, etc. I am looking foward to the next time I can eat at Dodgingtown Market & Deli‼

So, my wife and I, along with our tween daughter, visited Hilltop Kitchen on a whim last Saturday…read more First impressions were wonderful. The dining room was empty as we came early, and it looked beautiful. The entire restaurant, to the eye, is absolutely a vibe. There was one server on shift at the time and she was very nice and welcoming. We had very high hopes for the meal to come. We were fairly disappointed. It was during a brunch service. Initially ordered the calamari as an appetizer. Yes, calamari as a brunch app is kind of strange however since it was available I ordered it. I typically order this wherever I go, because I execution-wise, it's not the easiest thing to prepare correctly. This app was tiny, as in the serving size. Additionally the calamari itself was super small as well. No nice meaty rings. No crispy tentacles. Just a greasy mess. The dish purports the dipping sauce to be that of a fra diavolo, it was not. It was more like a marinara with chunky bits of aromatics and perhaps a bit of crushed red pepper. It was also very pricey given everything. Even if it were perfect, still on the pricey side. At the same time my daughter ordered French toast. For $18. We are talking $6 a slice of brioche. Wild business, that. As mains, my wife ordered the avocado toast. Which she actually seemed to enjoy, although the bread was soggy, and the other items on the plate severely lacking. I ordered the "lobster" cake eggs Benedict. If this was lobster, then I'm the Mother Theresa. It was, by my palate overly processed canned crab meat. At best, overly processed lobster meat, but I highly doubt that given the taste, color, and texture. The CRAB cake itself was meh, the accompanying potato hash was okay, and the hollandaise sauce was passable if not good. We ordered drinks as well. My lemon drop martinis were pretty good. My wife was dissatisfied with her margarita, then ordered a dirty martini that was okay. We walked out with a tab of nearly $200. To say it was worth the money would be absurd. I hate to be so blatantly honest with this review, but this experience (food and drink-wise) was not one I would recommend.
