Boy, this market sure went downhill in the last 25 years. It's downmarket and RIDICULOUSLY expensive for produce. I know I'm spoiled living in CA again but Stop and Shop produce costs more than Manhattan's Upper East Side. As Sue W noted, it's also not at all clean. The red peppers (cut in plastic) were slimy and I actually drove back to get my money refunded lol. Rented a car in Hartford so enjoyed tooling around my old haunts. Depressing all around. Rent is cheap in New Haven (even at the glorious, much-renovated Taft) and so is parking. But my God, the grocery stores are expensive. You're better off paying high prices at a local upscale market like Whitneyville Food Center. Closest Trader Joe's isn't close. read more

The recycling center at the Hamden Stop & Shop is a disgrace. It is frankly disgusting with a stained and sticky concrete floor, often littered with garbage and the faint aroma of a garbage dump. More than that, half of the machines are typically out of order. If this company truly cares about the community, including the environment, perhaps it could invest in a cleanup and remodeling of the recycling center and hire sufficient personnel to keep ALL of the machines operating. read more

This USED to be a great store. One of the best around. But now, wow. I go here because they carry a few items others do not & it is close to my home. But its a scary experience now. I have a bad time almost every time I shop here, mostly from the customers.....but also aisles being SO narrow & blocked by displays. But the problem this time was with employees. For example, during my last trip, no less than THREE male employees were horribly rude. I watched as one of them literally blocked up almost the entire area (near the meat dept) People were trying desperately to get their carts around these men, as only 1 cart MAYBE could squeeze through at one time......but they just ignored us all. One older gentleman customer got mad & actually spoke to the employee, telling him he 'didn't need to block up everything.' The employee did not move. We all were forced to duck down another aisle to get around. The second employee did the SAME blocking by the pharmacy. Everyone squeezed past him too. The third employee was stocking soup, so myself & another person waited patiently until he was finished (we both wanted to buy that item). But he & the woman both bumped into & knocked down the same random item & the employee looked angry. The lady customer looked puzzled & picked up the item for the man, put it back on the shelf. He was finished, but kept angrily adjusting things on the shelf. Finally, he stormed out of our way. The lady looked at me, aghast, & told me that the man had cussed (I did not hear it) but she felt he cussed aloud, saying 'Douche!' We both shook our heads & picked out our soup. We agreed that employees often run fast through this store, you have to dodge them quick. They DO NOT MOVE OUT OF YOUR WAY or even say 'Excuse me." Very rude. Long story short, that day I cut my shopping trip short.....& did not bother to buy everything I needed. Its not worth the hassle. read more

Typical stop & shop but could use a few updates. The self checkout needs a revamp because it is extremely slow you need an approval after every scan because the machine miscalculates or gives you less than a second to place an item in your bag. Also the deli kiosk number generator is consistently broken. Another note is that the bread is not properly guarded so you are getting the grab your own bread/bagels at your own risk as some customers don't use white sheets at all or new ones when selecting additional items and they don't have utensils. There stock is also generally not up to date with the ads and many items are usually out. Today they were out of a selection of eggs, orange juice, shredded cheese, chicken to name a few. Hopefully this feedback is reviewed and new/updated processes implemented. read more

This is the Stop&Shop I use most often because it is open until midnight - two hours longer than the others in the area. I also appreciate the freshness and variety of their produce. The store is undergoing major renovations, which based upon what has been done thus far will greatly improve the appearance of the store. Things are a bit difficult to locate at present because of that but more than once an employee has helped me find what I wanted. The downside of shopping late is that items are regularly missing from the shelves, particularly items on sale or earning points. While that happens in any supermarket I have found it worse here. It would be a great improvement if some restocking could be done earlier. read more

As part of the current renovation, the two aisles on the left side of the store that previously were designated for healthy choices have disappeared permanently, according to a store employee. My local stop and shop store. I'm there twice a week getting groceries. Unfortunately no longer buying from the Deli department since the attendants cutting are tremendously RUDE. I ask for my meats thin and they give me the first few sliced thin and then finish it off extremely thick. I have called the store and spoke to the manager. This has happened so many times where I leave the deli department embarrassed because I'm being mocked by my order. Like every Stop & Shop, this one has a slightly different layout and variety. For example this one has a bit larger natural foods section than the one on, say, Amity road near Woodbridge. Something else this store has is managers who follow people of color as they're shopping, accuse them baselessly of shoplifting, and sometimes detain them. They do this in front of peoples' children, and it is bad either way but that's especially disrespectful and threatening. I know folks who will not set foot in this place because of the atmosphere here. If you're not the one being followed/harassed, you won't see it. If you're white you almost definitely won't. I placed my first delivery order yesterday so that I wouldn't have to take a two year old out in this frigid weather. My delivery window was 6-8pm. The time came and went with no delivery. No phone call and no status change on my order online either. At around 10:30 my order was updated to ready for delivery with a new delivery time of 11- midnight. Who gets groceries delivered at midnight? Now the app isn't allowing me to cancel because the order was already picked. I stayed up until 11 and finally went to bed( my husband stayed up and waited) no delivery. I called today and they said the driver tried to call at 11:50pm but couldn't get through. The rep was less than helpful. He saw no problem with a midnight delivery time. What's the point in having time slots to pick from if you don't honer them. How is this a hassle free experience? Now the money spent ( over $100) is still not back on my card. No apology, no nothing. I guess I'll be a BigY shopper from now on. read more

Because we live less than a mile away from this store, we used to go here at least twice a week to shop and pick up needed items, but now we avoid this place like the plague, down to once a month, and go to Shop Rite instead. STOP and SHOP is another supermarket they have fooooooooooooooooddddd - most of it is not prepared but just sitting there ready to be prepared and then they also have deli meants and seafoods (fruits of the sea, whole fihses, big and small shrimps) two frozen foods ailses if you're into that cheeses, kosher and not kosher (for the gentiles) you cant drink inside, not sure if smoking is allowed will update when I have more information bank location inside the place that's it i guess #peace read more

This is an ok grocery store with a terrible meat department. The sale items are nearly always out of stock and the men stocking the meat packages are extremely unhelpful. The rest of the store is typically clean and well stocked. None of the employees are friendly with the exception of two of the seafood employees and one front end supervisor. read more

Ever since the "other" S&S closed, it appears the people from that end of town have made their way into this store, causing a Hamden police officer having to be stationed here at all times doing armed security due to theft. I like stop and shop for different reasons. There are always stocked shelves and always open lines for self check out which I like. The prices are ok, on par for most supermarkets, slightly cheaper than other places nearby. The store is clean and the front staff nice as well. I love the fact that after I go to the gym right across the street I can stop in for groceries or deli snack, as well as water and get what I need. So why only 3 stars?? This place is always a zoo! The parking lot is always full. The people driving in the parking lot do not pay attention to the big red stop signs and I have had numerous close calls in the parking lot more times than I care to count. Now I'm not expecting any patrols and lot monitors but people that drive through here are dangerous. A lot of times there are groups collecting money at the entrance. I don't mind it every now and then but sometimes it gets overwhelming. I will say that on the inside the place is neat and people are well behaved. But when it comes to grocery stores you can do a lot worse. The store is relatively clean. It's not Whole Foods. You can't look into the shiny floor and see Narnia. But it's passable. Everything is usually well-stocked, which is one of the most important aspects of being a grocery store. It doesn't have the selection of bigger markets but it's acceptable. The employees seem to be competent and polite; management seems to have a good hand on things. The produce that I've seen from this location has been good as well. My main complaint is the prices. Wal-Mart is literally across the street so I go there instead for a lot of items. I used to work in the grocery industry and I can tell it's a well-ran store. When Stop & Shop locations are average, they're a 2. When they're good, they're a 3. This is a good store. read more

This is a "Super Stop & Shop" in that it's bigger and better than its sibling just down the road. I like that Stop & Shop offers you 5 cents off for each reusable bag. I wish it were 10 cents, but then, I suppose I wish groceries were free too, so at least they have an initiative to get people to use fewer bags. The produce selection is kinda "meh," but they have gotten better over time. Illustrative anecdote: I used to have to drive to Shop Rite to find anything other than jalapenos once upon a time, but now I can reliably find serranos, anaheim peppers, and poblanos. Decent prices on milk, both regular and organic, they've got your staples of eggs and flour and coffee and whatnot, and they have a natural/organic foods section that's not too bad, with a fair number of gluten-free offerings, if you are looking for that sort of thing. The other cool feature they have for Stop & Shop cardholders is that you can check out a price scanner when you arrive at the store and walk around scanning items and adding them directly to your bag (which you did remember to bring from home, right?). Then you head to the self-checkout and hold up your scanner and pay as normal, but without the tedious scanning of each item individually. This system has a few kinks -- it once scanned the full price on an item, and didn't give me the S&S cardholder discount -- but whatever, it's super-convenient, and you can more easily keep track of your spending as you walk around the store, instead of being all like "What the -- , how did I spend $3,230.54 on eggs and flour and bread?! Did it count my 5 cents off for reusable bags??" This location also has a RedBox for DVD and game rentals, and a CoinStar machine, and (oddly) a bank branch in the store [will post an update when I look up the name]. Helpful tip: I avoid the often terrifically bad traffic on this part of Dixwell on weekdays (people heading to 15) by the simple expedient of turning onto Skiff from Whitney, then taking a left directly into the parking lot. This store never honors sale prices. It said buy 5 Powerades and get them for $0.79 each. I buy 5 and they ring up regular price. I go to the "Solution Center" and bring this to the guys attention. He finds it in the flyer and was like "oh probably because they were a mix of regular Powerade and Powerade Zero. Do you want to return these?" No I want you to honor your ad or change the end cap that these are on. He was no help whatsoever. There are always lots of people there working but they don't seem to know what they are doing. The Stop & Shop at Dixwell and Skiff is my grocery store of choice when shopping in Hamden. It's a bit more upscale than the Stop & Shop down the road at Dixwell and Putnam (1245 Dixwell), but prices are lower than at the nearby Shaw's, so it's the sort of "in between" option that Goldilocks would choose. So why just three stars? Because it's awfully hard to be a "fan" of a humongous modern American supermarket, that's why! But this Stop & Shop is "A-OK" in my book. read more

I'm surprised how many negative reviews there are for this location. I'm used to the North Haven stop and shop location. In terms of product quality and variety this store is miles ahead of the North Haven location. Price wise it could be more competitive considering Shop Rite and Walmart are close by, but if your more concerned with convenience, product quality, and variety I think you'll be satisfied with this location. It carries products that I love which I can't find in any other store. I like my honest unsweetened green tea in the big plastic bottle instead of the little glass ones. They also carry Hint water and boom chicka pop which is my favorite snack food. I'm a fan of their organic section and I'm pleased with the produce quality. Considering it is a chain grocer.. Stop & Shop is done with the renovation and I will be taking a break for awhile. I shop for 2 households and previously only at s/s. The new area for vegetable is very crowded. I stand and wait until I can grab some veggies without breathing down somebodies neck. Not really interested in getting covid. Did they forget about this aspect. There seem to be fewer fresh produce item and many more packaged and prepared items Now taking up most of the long wall in the produce area. The natural foods are a is gone. This two aisle area with its own freezer and refrigerator areas was a primary draw to the store for me. It takes me much longer to do a weeks shopping as vegan alternatives are mixed in with meat products through the store. A ridiculous amount of space has been given over to toilet paper and paper towels. I suspect this is to cover up supply chain shortages in other areas. I did voice my concerns twice as this was In progress, but was told this was set in stone and would be extended to all stop and shop stores. I have been back twice since this was completed. Will check back in 90 days to see if changes. Meanwhile exploring the many nearby options. read more

Very chaotic. This place does have a bunch of shoppers, to be sure, but between the employees milling about and the shoppers not sure where they're going, it logjams frequently. While I was coming in I witnessed an employee who was talking with 2 individuals about theft (except she wasn't accusing them of theft, and this is right when I walked into the store). Wanted to buy something from the olive bar but it looked sloppy and unkempt with food and liquid sloshed about, so I decided against. I was 4 people deep for the express line and it took me over fifteen minutes to get out of there. Could not tell you how much was the cashier and how much the customer, as both had the darndest time ringing a card through, then quibbled about this price, that price. ... Nice clean store with a nice selection of all grocery items. They have a nice produce section and bakery as well as a pretty robust deli section which is always busy. The store does not accept any coupons except their own and manufacturers coupons but they do double them every day do that is a huge plus for avid coupon fans. Prices seem reasonable for the Connecticut market. They also have gas points if you sign up for a store card. Additional bonus savings which always helps. Overall a nice clean store with no major flaws at least on my few trips there on a short vacation. read more

This is a basic three star review in my opinion, basically because the produce here isn't the greatest. Maybe it's because I am a California native but it just seemed that the produce had been sitting out for awhile. Another reason why it is only three stars is because they always are moving the store around and just when I finally find the spot it should be in, it changes. Besides all that it is a nice grocery shop. They have a flower section and the flowers are actually quite nice. The store is rather large too and even has a Dunkin' Donuts inside. Oh and the Red Box dvd place is awesome! You can rent any recent movie for only one dollar a night. The only downside is when you get stuck behind some idiot who is taking forever to make their choice. The previous reviews have all pretty well explained this S and S. There are definitely days that I avoid this place (Sundays). We also look for deals through the weekly flyer. The produce can be hit or miss. They always have a decent selection of Nature's Promise products (unlike Wallingford). Once you get used to the store, shopping will pass quickly even when it is really busy. Not the best place, but not the worst either..... read more
