My man and I stopped by this Aldi for the first time ever to kill some time while our car was being serviced nearby, but we won't be coming back. The moment we walked in, we were hit with a really chaotic environment. The aisles were dirty and the shelves were a total mess. As someone who gets anxious shopping in that type of atmosphere, I knew immediately I couldn't stay. We decided to leave without buying anything, but that's when things went from bad to worse. As we were walking out, another customer was entering the store with an item in their hand, which triggered the security alarm (likely because a cashier had been negligent and forgot to remove a tag). Suddenly, a younger employee came charging at us with an incredibly aggressive attitude. I've worked retail before, and you're taught to be polite and apologetic when investigating an alarm, but this guy was the opposite. When my man told him we didn't take anything, the worker just stayed confrontational. I finally asked, "Are you accusing us of something?" and he actually looked us in the eye and said, "Yes." An older manager simultaneously came out to tell the employee it was a mistake and that it was the other person who tripped the alarm, but the damage was done. Being falsely accused and approached so aggressively is completely unacceptable. This worker is honestly a liability, the next person they treat like this might not be as patient as we were. We stopped by here to browse around and kill some time while we wait for our car to get fixed. Didn't see anything we wanted so we decided to leave. As we left someone came in and the alarm went off. A worker comes running out and I tell him we didn't take anything. My lady replies are we being accused of something? His manager follows and says it was a mistake. The employee says with an attitude yes the alarm went off. False accusations are not appreciated. I wont come back here. read more

I was on my way back home from New Jersey and decided to stop by this location for an efficient grocery trip! AWFUL LOCATION!! If you love a grocery store that is disorganized, unkept aisles with debris (more of a slipping hazard with the amount of debris than if this location was to mop and not put up a "wet floor" sign), one lane cash register, fruits on the verge of their shelf life and low stocked shelves, then this is definitely the store for you! The Churro Man!!!! Ok, so this isn't the name of the "business" but I thought it was worth giving him a name. We went into Aldi's West Haven, CT to get a last minute item. To our surprise a man was selling churros from the back of his van. We decided to make his day and support his hard efforts by purchasing a bag of homemade churros! The first bite into the cold (we're in December) churros was to our surprise DELICIOUS!!!! It was crispy and fresh! To me just enough cinnamon and sugar dusted on these scrumptious-ness-ness!!!!!! The fact that they were cold was forgotten. Come to the Aldi's parking lot where you'll find him waving down cars to grab a bite of these lovely entities. You won't be disappointed! I came across this ALDI store as I was passing exit 42 on the I-95 North on my way to East Lyme, CT I remember ALDI since the 80's when I used to live in Germany and Holland. I was very surprised but pleased to see a store in West Haven, Connecticut USA. ALDI is a supermarket with great deals, fresh produce, super clean, friendly service and as I was told during Christmas time they have the traditional German 'Lebkuchen' in stock. We love Aldi's! The staff at West Haven are friendly and helpful. Clean store, easy to navigate. I shop there a couple times a week, and get much of my shopping done here. I would give 4.5 stars but no option to do so. Only reason I can't give 5 stars is that I would like to see more organic produce offered. I often head to the Milford Aldi for that, as they seem to get more in their store and more specialty items than West Haven does (e.g., non-Lunchables lunch kits, better and more selection of organic produce and meats). Love Aldi's! Great food at cheap prices. No artificial colors in their store brands. You won't find cheaper prices for dairy and snack foods, and the fruit and vegetable prices are way lower than other chain grocery stores. We were very disappointed with our ALDI visit. While the store is new, bright, and clean, the food was a big let down. We found most of the fruits and vegetables to be in very poor condition. Moldy, soft, etc. There are almost no name-brand products here. That's not normally a problem for me, but I do like to know the country of manufacture. Especially with recent incidents involving a Very Large Asian Trading Partner of the USA with very lax quality standards. Of the frozen foods I looked at, most were made in this certain eastern country, or they were not labeled at all. I thought by law, food had to say what its country of origin was. In any case, I didn't want to risk my family's food safety. I'd rather shop at Walmart -- and that's saying a lot. read more

It's always good to have options to help you save money on your food purchases! Aldi is a grocery with a warehouse type feel since food items are displayed from boxes that make up the aisles. We keep a quarter in our cup holder in the car. It's referred to as the aldi quarter so we can get a cart each time ;) I always forget bags though. Must work on that :) read more

Aldi is great! This store just opened on March 23, and I'm already a huge fan. But beware, Aldi is a different kind of grocery store, and its an experience! 1) Carts - You put in a quarter to unlock your cart, and when you put it back you get your quarter back... great way to get your customers to be more responsible and keep your parking lot clean, but some people won't like this. 2) Dairy! - $2/gallon for milk, $1 for a dozen eggs, this is as good as it gets people. Amazing deals 3) Store brand - Nearly everything is off brand, but thats ok, because it is so much cheaper than any other off brand you will see at a regular grocery store. 4) No credit - Debit or cash only, which saves the company money (credit costs the store for every transaction). 5) Bags - They don't bag your groceries, they put them back in a cart for you. Though I did see some people with bags, i didn't quite catch how it worked. Anyway, it's a great experience, I really recommend you check it out, at the very least, go pick up a gallon of milk. read more

My first trip to Aldi, I walked in and walked out very unimpressed. But after spending a few minutes on their website and with a better understanding their business strategy, I went back and am now a big fan. 1)They carry only the most basic and popular items at very low prices. Most everything are brand name items packaged under their own name. Some are really good quality, some not so great, and it takes a bit of trial and error to see what you personally like. I particularly like the dairy section as the quality is good (and cheap). 2) Aldi has a growing selection of special diet foods under various labels - gluten-free, organic, low fat/sodium, etc. Special better-quality stuff is brought in as specials under their "Specially Selected" label (delicious tomato sauce!). 3) There is a European mentality of self-service, which can surprise newbies. You "rent" a cart outside the store for a quarter, which you get back when you return the cart to the stand. The cashiers do not bag the stuff for you, just put it in a cart which you can then take to the counters provided to sort and bag yourself. Bags are not free but available for a few cents, but most bring their own reusable bags. If you like personal service, this is not the place for you! 4) They do have a few produce items on sale every week, which can be really cheap, but sometimes the fresh produce is not so fresh, so be vigilant when buying. You can save a lot of money by buying your basic packaged/frozen food items here, and then supplementing with a trip to a regular market for fresh produce, meats, and baked goods, as these are very limited at Aldi. read more

The lines are way too long. Normally one cashier. The store seems like a low budget Food Warehouse. They charge too much for bags and I dislike the coin operated carriages. You have to wait in line to get a case quarter if you do not have one. Hopefully someone is nice enough to take your nickels and/dimes for their cart. They should staff more employees. It would really help. Not the worse store I've been in but it sure is far from the best. I love their whole wheat bread no enriched flour. read more

Love this store! All the products are amazing quality and SUPER cheap. The chocolate here is WAY better than anything you'll find at a normal supermarket, as it is all made in Europe. I've bought everything from fresh produce to canned tomatoes and it's all fantastic. I've even seen organic chocolate and organic cereals here - sometimes the exact same stuff from Whole foods, but WAY cheaper. Wish they would expand to bigger supermarket! read more

Fun store! Everything is off-brand, but according to the Food Network's show Unwrapped, almost all, if not all, of Aldi's brands were made in the actual brand name factories. I got Aldi's version of honey nut cheerios and they taste exactly the same and the box was under $2. I also got a pound of fresh strawberries for $1.59, which is a great deal, considering they're usually nearly $4/pound! All the produce is really fresh, too. I've gotten their fresh meats, as well, which are low price and very good. The only down side is that they don't have a huge selection of stuff like a regular grocery store would, but they do have a little of everything. Definitely worth checking out! read more

Aldi was not really what I was expecting. I didn't see many recognizable brands, and the selection of food was a bit off. For example, you could only buy lemons in a bulk bag, and I didn't see any fresh fruit at all. The layout of the store is also a bit inconvenient. You have to enter and immediately go down a single aisle, and people's carts were bottlenecking when they stopped to look at items. The store felt a bit run-down overall. I was hoping for a trader joes-type store (TJ's owns Aldi), but this wasn't quite it. read more

Been there twice and although its an odd store on many levels, they have a wide array of food and products. They are often not the overpriced brands carried by the Stop & Shops, but the quality is just as good. Pricing is way below the other stores, and in fact its refreshing to see other brands without predatory pricing. Picked with a stalk of brussels sprouts for $2.99. We cut them off and it ended up being about $1 a pound. In the other stores, without stalk, it is $4.99 for 10 oz, or loose ones $4.99 lb. Its an odd store. No bags. Bring your own. A counter so you can pack bags. Be careful what you buy though. I had also bought some flowers by the front register, and when I got them home realized half of them were too aged or ripe, and should have been tossed. read more

This store is a joke. I went to get half and half and they were all out. They said it wasn't stopped in the warehouse and dust it wasn't delivered. This makes the fourth time that one item or another common items we're out of stock. So, I grabbed three gallons of milk, walk to the front of the store and the line was 15 deep with large baskets full of stuff. That was at 7:30 p.m. tonight. The service is terrible their stock is always Limited and it is like a crap shoot knowing whether or not you will get an item when going. This store is far from customer friendly. I generally shop at Whole Foods and Trader Joe's and buy as much Organic food as possible so i was very impressed to discover Aldi's had organic items at a much lower cost. After paying approximately $5.00 for Salsa for years, i tried Aldi's organic and found it delicious! It was under $2!! They also carry organic Ketsup as good as any other organic brand for at least a $1 less. I also buy their brand of Original unflavored Almond milk for $1 less that other stores. So don't rule them out for great tasting organic choices for less. They also offer many gluten free options. And i have, on more than one occasion, met very kind shoppers. Ones that let you go ahead of them if you only have 2 items to their cart full. My experiences at Aldi's have been only positive. read more
