Nothing but positive for Newport & staff. My daughter spent 60 days at the Ranch location during a time when she was really struggling. Newport was there on all levels of support from listening, counselling, copping mechanisms & all the tools needled to tackle all that life throws at you. The facility is in a very remote location, which is good..not many distractions..when I enrolled my son, I was told there was equine therapy, yoga, medication and other alternative therapies that wre actually not offered..the communication with staff could be very frustrating. When you call in, you get a receptionist who cannot forward any calls. This results in not getting answers immediately . Staff seems caring but there were many staff changes while my son was there, which resulted in many pages of treatment. The kids constantly complained about the quality of the food ..many meals wete inedible, so they are offered sandwiches as a substitute, which consistency of bread turkey and nothing else .nit the most tasty sandwich ..for the amount of money they charge for treatment, they could afford to hire a better chef . read more

Pressured to take the spot within 3 days of saying they had an opening. Told us it was covered by insurance. What they neglected to say it residential care is covered but at that point not approved for our situation. Communication between higher ups and St. Cloud location = terrible. We were told son could bring phone (would only be allowed to use it at certain times). Got to clinic and told - no phones allowed. After 3 weeks, told insurance was denying it. Was given the option to go to utilization and pay 3 days out of pocket. Thinking we had a chance to get it approved by insurance went with utilization. After a month received the medical records saying in their scale that my son would be at best outpatient nowhere near RTC. We weren't told this. If known we would have pulled the plug instead of paying the outlandish out of pocket costs. Then when we decided to discharge my son after insurance denied the appeal. We ok'd the discharge at 2 in the afternoon. I drove the 6 hours. My wife called at 8 PM and the clinic had no idea he was being discharged. No checklist of all belongings. We have now lost a backpack and a few books. Never Ever would I recommend NewPort unless you know for sure your child is accepted for residential care. Lesson learned on my part. Oh and my boy is in worse shape 1 month after and refuses to do PHP because of his experience in the clinic (a lot of fights, police were called at one point) read more

I HIGHLY recommend Newport! I sent my 9 year old across the country to the CA location for "littles." It was one of the harder things I have ever had to do. I told myself the entire flight that we would check out the place, and turn around and all go home if I had any hesitations. I had searched online and found every negative review, but understood how that can be a polarizing view. I cried until I couldn't breathe as we drove away. BUT it turned out to be the greatest decision!! That place is unbelievably legit. The staff are incredible and ON it! They kept us informed every step of the way...a lot of communication. My son has been home for almost 3 months now, and I often notice him using the skills he learned at Newport. Grateful is an understatement. read more

Looking for a residential program for your child is very very hard. After talking with other parents whose kids had gone to Newport Academy, Orange CA, and hearing their success I decided to send my kid here. Not an easy choice since we live on the other side of the country. From the beginning Newport was welcoming, showing me where my kid would be living introducing me to much of the staff. It was hard to leave but I had a better sense of who was working with my child & where they would be living. My child was there for 70 days, it was agonizing but they could call me daily or as desired & we met weekly with the family therapist. Prior to Newport family session were agonizing, my child hated them & did not participate. At Newport they were engaged & the sessions were productive. We continue to use the tools we learned now that they are home. Other therapists & counselors were engaged in my child's recovery & I got weekly updates & time to ask questions. At times it was overwhelming but better that then no info which was my experience when my child was in another program. Counselors & therapists continue to check in, even now that my child has been home for a bit. I am very satisfied with the experience & results both my child & I had with Newport Academy, Orange, CA, and would highly recommend it to other families experiencing a child with addiction & behavioral health issues. read more

I will forever be grateful for everything Newport Academy did to help my son. I felt supported throughout the entire process, and continue to receive that support through their Alumni Program even though my son was discharged 5 months ago. It was hard to be away from our son, so I really appreciate how much communication and updates we received from all of the staff. I could see how much they genuinally cared about our son and were providing encouragement and support. On top of that, I feel like the family therapy sessions with our son also gave my husband support and helped us learn how to improve our communication with our son and as a family. He built some great relationships and has taken so much away from this experience, he always talks about how grateful for everything they taught him. I can't begin to express how truly grateful I am for Newport and how it helped our daughter. She came out with a new outlook on her life. The counseling and therapy she received helped her greatly. She worked on schoolwork and other educational material to help in all aspects of life. I was able to talk to her twice a day and check up on her with staff anytime I felt necessary. I felt the clinical team was very professional, forthcoming and helpful. Our family therapist was very accessible which made communication easy and consistent. For us, the big bonus with our family therapist was that she had raised her own children and was not operating off of theory alone but had been there and done that with adolescents herself. We have had mixed experiences with therapists in the past and have unfortunately been on the receiving end of well-intentioned yet terrible advice. While I can't speak to all of the Newport programs and locations, I can say that I placed my child in the Orange County program and was very pleased with the results in my child's behavior after 90 days. The staff was excellent at handling my child's anger issues and keeping him from going AWOL. He had much less anger in general after his stay in Orange County. Violent tendencies ceased all together. The counseling was excellent and kept me informed of my child's progress throughout. I recommend this program for queer kids as well, as my child identifies differently. read more

Newport was our third residential treatment center after two failed stays for my adolescent daughter. The approach at Newport was vastly different than anything we had experienced, and after a year and a half of living in crisis, I felt my daughter was finally seen. We had the most phenomenal family therapist who taught us how to communicate again, and her individual therapist brought strategies to the table that really worked for her in addressing her challenges and areas for growth . The nursing staff was professional and practiced incredible communication, and I really felt that our family's needs were met with wrap around care. Aftercare was incredible as well, with support groups offered daily foe both client and family, and a very active message board through the alumni board that keeps us connected to care. We had a great experience with Newport in Orange,CA - my daughter struggled so bad and had been to other facilities. she came home with new outlook on life after living there for 3 months. She gained friendships and got away from her "normal" at home and was able to reset and gain knowledge. She attended NA there and got to see that side of recovery which I believe helped her succeed. We have struggled with my daughter's mental health for years, and she has been in and out of all kinds of treatments. This one is exceptional compared to what she has been to before. They see her for who she is, and the quality of care is outstanding. I love that they involve the families. They have so many different types of therapy that they do. Communication is fantastic. We are able to do visits with her over the phone or video. You could hear the difference in her thinking level and acceptance of what is happening in life right now. read more

In their OC location, I felt very welcomed and was able to get comfortable very fast. Although everybody there was there for something different, we all just wanted to get better and get out of there. Smirtii, Josh, Patsy, Dario, and Miranda were incredible to us, and we had them for most evenings. It was clear they truly wanted to be there for us. If someone was up having a break down, they were by their side. Someone screaming and yelling? They'd take it to the face and go take a walk with them and make sure all the other residents were in the other room. Josh often even did work outs with us. The overnight staff was incredible as well. There was good communication between the evening and overnight, and when I had a really rough night they checked on me multiple times to try to get me to sleep, and always offered to lend an ear. Josh by far was the most compassionate, sympathetic, and the most beautiful human being in the house. He always had a smile, always was calm, and was always fair with us. There are stories of him covering kids with blankets when they're having a rough time and trying to offer comfort. And he showed us pictures of his kitten!! Miranda always looked up inspirational quotes and was the most free spirited of us there. When we went to an obstacle course and we had to zip line more than 50 feet up in the air (maybe 100) she literally cried alongside us but eventually jumped off and it gave us all a lot of courage and confidence to see that we weren't the only ones scared. When one of our residents was having an extremely intense panic attack/flashback she sat there with him the entire time comforting him, telling him inside jokes, and trying to distract him until he came out of it laughing. Smirtii sat with another resident while he broke down in the middle of the night when everybody was supposed to be in bed, and was always calm and understanding. And Patsy was like a mother to us all. Nobody crossed her, and she made sure there was respect, but she called us all her children and made it clear we were loved and cherished. I can always recall her complimenting my outfits, and calling out the positive changes in others. And Dario was our teacher, who had the patience of a saint when he would sit with kids for an entire block, or however long they needed, to figure out some problem. And he always encouraged us with small treats like stickers, bead art, and other crafts. And he always allowed music! Also, the rock to recovery guy was amazing. He helped my creativity branch out and boosted my confidence to a more "just go with the flow" instead of trying to overthink and control every little thing. We created songs in just 1 hour, and it was my favorite group. The morning staff wasn't the best and it felt like they were only really there for the money, but over all, Newport literally saved my life when I was at my lowest. It got me out of an abusive house and helped stabilize me. The first day that I woke up there, my first thought was, "I finally feel awake" after having spent half a year in a deep depression that left me exhausted. read more

I was discharged from Hillside in April 2024, I had been through multiple programs and I'd seem to always end up back in treatment. When I came to Newport I was very close to death, I felt drained and tried every day. I'd just gotten out of a toxic relationship that caused me to spiral and I had a horrible relationship with my family. The day my parents dropped me off I cried and screamed for them to take me home, yelled at them that it was their fault. Betsy noticed me and helped my family to not listen to my cries and to leave before I manipulated them further, it might be weird, but i'm so so grateful she did. Betsy was the first ever person to listen to me and understand what I needed. I cried a lot during my first week because I was scared of what might come, "who was I gonna be surrounded by?" "Will I be able to save myself?" "It's it worth the time and money?" All the CC staff helped me find my place and find who I am. They sat down with me and sat in my presence of grief and guilt. They helped me with my anger outbursts and when I would have a bad day. They helped me make so many memories and helped me regain the memories I'd lost threw my addiction. One thing that Newport introduced me to is NA and AA, no other place has allowed their kids to go to NA or AA because most were locked up places. NA has saved my life, truly, I never knew what NA was until Newport. Another thing is, is that Newport also keeps up with you after treatment, they have a Newport app that you can use to still keep in contact with your friends you made in treatment, your CCs, and your treatment team. This is so important because most places throw you out and you never hear from them again, but Newport doesn't do that, Newport understands the grief that comes with leaving treatment and knows the struggle of wanting to talk to people about how you're doing or updates in your life. Last but not least, please work the program!! I understand the rules are hard and unfair, however, they keep the whole community safe. I witnessed kids who chose to break the rules and it messed with most of our community. From someone who listened to the rules, followed what to do, and worked their butt off. It truly works, as long as YOU are ready for it! Change doesn't just happen overnight, change takes time!! I'm almost a month out of treatment now and I continue to go to NA and have a sponsor. I'm 2 months clean off of Narcotics and I finally have my family back. I stick up for myself in situations I don't like and I focus on myself rather than others around me who want me to fail. It might be a good option in general. But I would like to add my opinion for the intake interview as one star. I had a great hope for their program for my son before and I was so excited to convince him and he showed interested in the program. However, after they took the intake interview with intake specialist (so call clinician) I was really disappointed because of it's not only drop my son for his ineligibility and but also it triggers his past trauma and it getting him worse since then. The interviewer requested me to interview my son alone who is only 15 year old and I have no idea what the interviewer asked him and after that he gained back his negative feeling towards his dad. On top of that, that so call clinician did not say anything to me and just finished their zoom interview. No contact from them for over 24 hours and I finally got the answers after 48 hours that my son is not eligible for their program although they recommended some places for my son. Be aware of their intake interview and you better not leave him alone for asking questions that impact his mindset. read more

I was very impressed with the care my daughter received while at Newport. The property was absolutely gorgeous and very homey which made her two month stay much more comfortable than the state run facilities she had been in before. The staff were all so welcoming and supportive throughout the entire length of her stay. She enjoyed the individual counseling sessions where she learned some great processing and coping skills that have served her well, even into the present. I was thankful for the virtual family counseling sessions where we worked on some key issues that were causing her a lot of stress. Unfortunately, due to an insurance issue she had to leave the program early, but the staff were very generous and provided her with a scholarship to stay for a few extra days so that we could appeal the insurance decision. We were grateful for all the help and support given by the entire crew and I would highly recommend Newport for families struggling with difficult circumstances like drug addiction, personality disorders, etc. read more

A family member -- an adolescent -- suffered terribly from anxiety and depression and a dizzying variety of other mental health symptoms for a year. After several local treatment options were not effective, the decision was made for my family member to go to Newport Academy in Virginia. I have to say that this was scary. I was certainly afraid that my family member might be on a path of no return -- after a short term residential program, the next step might be a long term residential program. I had no idea of what degree of healing one could realistically hope for. However, I couldn't be more pleased to see the outcome. My family member returned from an extended stay at Newport (a couple of months) in a much better place. At the beginning I was worried about a relapse, and I still worry about it some, but what I am seeing has been continued healing and recovery since my family member returned from Newport. Not every day is better than the day before, but every month is better than the month before. I cannot comment on the details of the treatment at Newport as I did not observe things nearly as closely as the parents would have and I am sure that not everything was perfect. But to me the bottom line is that a stay at Newport seems to have turned around the life of my family member. Every time I think about it, I pinch myself and ask, Did this really happen? It seems like a miracle, like a person was reborn. I held off on writing this review for a number of months because I wanted to make sure that I saw continued healing. Enough time has passed and I have seen enough continued improvement that I feel comfortable in writing. The reason that I am writing is that I am sure there are parents out there who have a child in distress and are wondering if something like Newport Academy is the right thing for your child. I know it is a scary decision to make and maybe if you read this review it will make you realize that there is hope for your child as well. My family member had the good fortune of a family with excellent medical insurance. It breaks my heart to realize that there are young people out there who are suffering, who could benefit greatly from a program like Newport Academy, and who do not have the opportunity. read more

Please reconsider having your daughter at this facility. Everything they offer online is false, the various therapy modalities to help your child is false. We sent our daughter to Orange, Ca to Hill house from Austin, Tx. We trusted them with the care for our daughter. Dr. Juilliani change her medication and had her on Effexor, which had her spiraling into increased impulsivity. We had shared her GeneSite testing and Effexor was on the list of medications to avoid. She ended up at the emergency room and basically just threw her away, stating that she would need a higher level of care after putting her on medication that caused her to spiral. They collected their insurance money and had no empathy or care in the world. Be CAREFUL sending your daughter!!!! read more

Newport was our first experience with residential treatment care (RTC) and we were thoroughly with the intake process, communication and care they provided. They have a number of resources throughout and after treatment. My daughter did not finish her treatment and ended up leaving the program worse off than when she entered. We were devastated she was not able to make the progress we were so optimistic would happen in Newport; however, they were not equipped to provided the level of care my daughter required as we came to learn. This is not the fault of Newport but the struggles and applicable care my daughter required. In retrospect we were able to see where things unintentionally led to her departure and may have been able to obtain a better outcome if we could have anticipated our daughter would face in any RTC. We went in with the highest of hopes and while our daughter's stay ended disastrously I do not lay it solely on Newport. Supporting a child with severe mental health struggles requires the involvement of everyone and your child has to buy in to treatment. All these variables make this all the more challenging and I will continue to recommend Newport for treatment. They have continued to provide support to our family and were receptive to my feedback. And if the situation arises in the future, I would not hesitate to return to Newport for my daughter's treatment. read more

During my 90 day stay i felt welcomed cared for and loved by all not once did i feel ignored or my feelings were invalid but through all of my therapy sessions,groups and conversations i absolutely loved newport it helped me overcome so much and teached me even more. A beautiful picture is presented of the Bonsall, CA location for boys with OCD. Description sounds amazing. What they don't tell you is that they can not make the child take meds, do schoolwork, do therapy etc. etc. unless they want to. If problems arise, your child will be discharged. If they are sent to a hospital while there and put on a temporary hold because they have allowed a mentally ill minor to decide for themselves, they stop care all together and communication and release of records to other needed facilities become very difficult. If your child has OCD only and is otherwise compliant with all other forms of treatment, maybe this is the place. If your child has any severe disorder like OCD, anxiety, ODD, intermittent explosive disorder, depression etc. DO NOT SEND THEM THERE. They are unqualified. read more

OKAY FIRST OF ALL. This place does not communicate well! My parents had no idea what was going on with me, and the staff kept telling them different things. I'm like very suicidal, and in 2022 (when I was there) I made a lot of statements. BUT here's the issue, wanting to do something and intending to are very different things, and Newport would call the COPS on my EVERY WEEKEND because I'd say things like "I want to die". They did not give me good support or know in any way how to deal with me. I eventually got out and I wasn't discharged, or kicked out, I just did it myself. That's how stupid Newport is. I had most wonderful experience in southern California at newport academy. Words cannot begin to express my gratitude and joy for the help of everyone at newport. I have been to countless acute care facilities, hospitals, and a long-term from age 13. And struggled with my mental health since I was a toddler.. It is ineffable. To look back and see how far i have come... Newport is like my second home. I will always think of it that way. They gave me a place to heal. I honestly don't know where I would be if my mom hadn't sent me to Newport. The care that the facilitators provide is healing in itself. Shoutout to my home away from home... Tanglewood!!! The staff are truly there to help people... Take it from me. Before Newport I was in and out of hospitals, got kicked/ banned out of all schools in the state, sent to county jail, struggled with self-harm and suicidal ideation, made attempts to end my life, substance abuse, BPD and more. Tanglewood /Newport gave me the tools to help repair and guided me in the process of repairing. I am I'm college now, after graduating high school in two weeks after missing a whole year, stayed sober, getting a job, and having healthy effective relationships. I used to think I wouldn't make it past 18, I even wished I wouldn't......now im living each second like it's my last and praying for another day. I know life will have its struggles. We all have our highs and lows. Newport gave me the knowledge and skills I needed to navigate through it. Life is a rollercoaster. And it's a ride I'm not scared to take. I'm excited for what the future has in store for me. Newport is a great place to learn to heal and work through difficulties.
