There was always an open door policy, if my son had a moment where he was overwhelmed, he always had someone to speak to. He was encouraged every step of the way. If my son had a rough day, he shared with me that he would go to the various staff members, and they would really be able to work with him and get him refocused on his mental health recovery journey. We would visit my son on Sundays and you could see the genuine care and concern that the staff had for the residents. The therapists were great as well, and the psychiatrist was able to get my son to a more stable place than we have been in so long. The facility is clean, neat, ornate, and comfortable and it feels like a place that you can be safe and heal. The owner is a Doctorate Level Psychotherapist who prides herself on maintaining a population that is based on the number of patients that is based on the patient needs and not most admitting as many patients as possible. By far the worst doctors I've ever seen …read more 1- she doesn't listen to you or retain ANY information you tell her so every time you see her she doesn't remember or even take notes or review notes from before so it's like she knows NOTHING about you each time you talk to her and have to explain things all over again endlessly with her 2- instead of listening and retaining ANYTHING you tell her about what you are and aren't comfortable with - instead she's just anxious to keep pushing certain medications on you as if maybe she's getting a kickback from them because she keeps pushing and suggesting the same ones over and over again even when you tell her over and over that you're uncomfortable with that medication or type of medication and even had bad reactions in the past from it and yer each time you speak to her she will continue to push it each time anyhow as if she doesn't remember you telling her no and why two weeks prior 3- she would keep telling me false information and her personal opinions on medication I was on or prescribed by my other primary doctors and trying to blame those or make me scared or paranoid on those medications making me scared and confused and worried then have to go back to those doctors and then they confirm what shiva is saying is false and to continue my medication needed to help me get healthy and better 4- she clearly just sits there and pushes her wrong opinions on you for the 15 min appt and doesn't care what you say or feel during the appt 5- Everytime I spoke to her I felt worse then before I saw her 6- she gave me one medication that I told her I had in the past that helped me , she gave me 10 pills 70 days ago and I still have 2 left . Each time that I spoke with her on each one of my appointments she offered me a refill, but I told her I didn't need one at that time because I still had some left. But when I notified them that I wanted to change Doctors because I was not comfortable with her they told me I could still get a refill since I was down to only two and I would need them and I couldn't see the new doctor for a month. So I called and asked for a few more just to make sure I had them so I can take them "as needed" or just have them in case I need them until I see the next doctor and even though she offered me refills several times she denied giving me a refill once she knew that I wasn't going to use her anymore and told me to just go ahead and go to the emergency room if I needed help. When she knows very well that the emergency room is not necessary for panic attacks. But the medication helps. It was basically her FU to me and retaliatory. Because she was mad that I was not going to want to use her anymore so she has decided that she was not going to give me a refill and basically told me to F off and go to the hospital if I needed help. Mind you that in 74 days of having the medication I only took eight. But she basically treated me as if I was some sort of pill seeker that just wanted more and more pills. When really in reality she knows very well that I'm just trying to make sure that I don't have to go to the hospital every single day and spend thousands of dollars at the hospital for panic attack attacks. She's very cruel and dismissive

A staff of the sweetest, most caring people, who never once make you feel like just a body to be moved through the system. In the full review, I write about a specific event in which Akua went above and beyond expectations to take care of me, proving that they truly do not treat clients as just bodies to be profited off of. Any of my friends that tell me they are struggling I will be sending here. If you are shopping around for options, it doesn't get much better than this. FULL REVIEW: Wow. What a Godsend of a program. I really cannot believe how lucky I was to find this place when I did. I was in a pretty rough spot; I knew I needed to go back in for treatment and I felt hopeless because every rehab I was calling around to in OC no longer accepted my insurance (great stuff, America). Finally Akua comes up in my never-ending search. They are one of two rehabs left in OC that still take my insurance. Even still, I am hesitant to commit because the last place I was at ended up being a nightmare (terrible food, uncomfortable beds, a therapist that was incredibly dismissive and apathetic, staff forgetting to take people to important doctors meetings, the list goes on). I call Akua, they tell me that they have their groups focusing on trauma-processing, personalized therapy, emotional support, and they dabble in less traditional therapeutic practices like yoga, & sound baths. SOLD! Come get me NOW! I was in the substance abuse side. The groups were diverse, legitimately helpful, not all straight out of the AA book; a program where the intention was to dissect, understand, and get to the emotional root of why we as people can't seem to drink or use drugs like a normal person can, not just straight "drugs are bad don't do them" D.A.R.E. propaganda. This difference in approach was absolutely critical for someone like me. The house was clean, the food was great, like actually great not just rehab-great, they took us out on different outings, went to the movie theaters twice, barbecued every weekend, legitimately enjoyed myself, and made some friends I hope to keep for life. The staff was so lovely, I want to specifically give shoutouts to Amber (love you girl miss you!!!), Mel, Clarice (if you're reading this, I hope the lambs have stopped screaming), Justin, and Garret, I looked forward to hanging out with them everyday. They all work so so so hard, they've got a lot more daily tasks as day-time techs than I have seen at any other treatment center, and they still would find the time to get to know us and tolerate our buffoonery. If you're an insomniac like me, you'll get to meet the nighttime tech Holly, a total vibe & a hard worker who was helping keep the place nice and clean all on his own volition. My therapist Paul was fantastic. My case manager Robbie is the coolest guy and helped me to get into a sober-living house and set me up in a program where a non-profit would help pay 2/3 of my rent so long as I was in Akua's outpatient program, DEFINITELY take advantage of this yall. Now there's one extra specific detail I want to recount because it proves to me just how different this place is from other treatment centers. When I left residential, I was slated to go to a certain sober living I will not be naming, and when I showed up they had me do a UA test, and the detox medications were still showing up in my system (a very normal thing to happen). I am immediately accused by this man of being high, I try to tell him to talk to my case manager who will show him my lab test results proving that my numbers have been steadily going down since I detoxed. He basically refuses and tells me to kick rocks. I call my case manager in tears, and he immediately sends the head of IOP to come and grab me. Akua let me stay an extra two days in residential, completely out of their own pocket, while finding me another sober-living to move into. I could not believe it. Any other program would NEVER have gone to this length to ensure I was safe, especially since they are losing money doing this. I will never fully be able to express how grateful I am for this. I was in Akua's outpatient program for a total of 4 months. This program helped to establish some structure and routine within my life while getting reintroduced to society (gross) and planning next-steps career wise. Richard, the head of IOP, is incredible, I would sometimes skip out on my therapy sessions to make sure that I got to listen to his groups. Karen, Gabby, Jolene, and Q are all fantastic and very deeply-caring, they lead great groups as well. My case manager Candace is one of the most lovely people ever, and she always kept me in check and called me on my BS. I have run out of words Yelp will let me write, and I want to keep going! I love this program! Akua made me a better man!
