It is very conveniently located in the aptly…read morenamed Rum Brook Plaza between a gas station, Helen's Place (open for lunch and dinner), and a small brookside park. At lunchtime, the parking lot is like a beehive with cars and trucks of people working in the area pulling in and back out with freshly made sandwiches, salads (not green salads, but the kind made with real mayonnaise), and those huge dill pickles that used to stand around in barrels at old time delis. There are individual servings of desserts in a refrigerator, a smattering of fresh produce, fresh breads, snacks, beverages (including beer and wine, and there is even a tiny wine alcove), ice cream, birthday candles and other things you might need once in a while but can't seem to lay your hands on. In the mornings, there are house-made breakfast sandwiches in a warmer so people can grab and go. The people work hard and are kind and friendly. We stopped in on Memorial Day - along with everyone else in the area - to pick up potato salad, seafood salad, and macaroni salad, and they were prepared! It was all hands on deck at the deli, shelves were stocked, and there were extra checkout clerks. Whether it's at the unofficial kickoff to summer or on snowy day, the fine folks at Rum Brook Market are there to make your day just that much more satisfying.

They are generous with meat and make everything to order. The little sitting area has been sufficient for a quick bite and if you want sides the rest of the store has them. It's still the 603 Marketplace, but in October you may have seen the "under new management" sign and "Haffners" on the sign and pumps. A neighbor told me that Haffner's is a mid-sized business based in northern MA that does oil, propane, gas station/convenience stores between MA and NH, so at least this company has the experience to run a place like this. You may have noticed the gas is now more competitive for the area, not 5-15 cents less per gallon. I went in and it has the same craft and branded beers, some beneficial changes to the deli in terms of quality of meats, and they still have pizza. It may still be too early to figure what changes they will make, so let's watch this carefully. We know the last owner really ran this place as a political action office, not a business, but a hobby. Gone now are the political signs, the disparaging cartoons of politicians at the pumps, the front-door sign saying "we love freedom so take your mask off". As you can see in the below reviews, they unapologetically urged many of us to go elsewhere. The thing is, how many other places are there in town with gas, food and groceries? - actually 4 others, and we went! So now the old owner can publish his business plan: (1) Buy a run-down business in a prime location in a town of about 5000, and pay to bring it up to modern standards, improve grocery options, offer food and pizza. (2) Alienate 40% of the townspeople with your "in your face" politics, and (3) go out of business in 2 years. Oh yeah and (4) Think about "What could have gone differently here". We have a right to our politics and it's a sacred right, but incorporating it into a business is never wise...

The food is always great, but what I really love about this place is the people. Everyone is genuinely friendly and always seems so appreciative of your business. There's just an old-school New England/New Hampshire wholesomeness to the place that you don't find everywhere anymore. This trip we had the Turkey Thanksgiving sandwich with gravy on the side and the pastrami on a sub roll with Swiss and deli mustard. Both were absolutely fantastic. Washed it all down with an RC Cola, which was a fun surprise because you almost never see RC anymore! Great food, great people, and the kind of local place you actually look forward to coming back to. It's an annual tradition for us now, and I have a feeling it will continue to be one for many years to come.

I asked the gentleman at the counter if they make a North Shore three-way. He confidently replied,…read more"Sure do!" What arrived was an absolute abomination. The roast beef was salted like deli cold cuts and wasn't rare at all, the barbecue sauce wasn't James River--it was some house-made substitute--and it wasn't even served on a buttered grilled onion roll. Somehow they still called it a North Shore three-way. I'm sorry, but if it doesn't have James River sauce and isn't on a buttered grilled onion roll, it's not a North Shore three-way. That's just a roast beef sandwich having an identity crisis. And for reasons known only to the gods, it cost $19.74. Needless to say, I won't be going back. If you're going to charge twenty bucks for a North Shore three-way, at least make an actual North Shore three-way.
