Well worth a drive from Sacramento, Newcastle Wine Shoppe is where to go around the world with a wine tasting experience much more cost efficient than actually traveling to Europe. We don't have a wine bar or shop like this anywhere else in the area, in my amateur opinion. Clay is personable, knowledgeable, and honest, approaching Oenology like your friendliest professor from back in the day (He kind of does remind me of my Classical Mythology professor, go figure...). He is what keeps drawing us for return visits, even though the wine library is hand-selected perfection. If you're looking to expand your palate and learn more about wine without having to pay a bunch for classes, this is an excellent choice for that, sans pretentious vibes of any kind. I wish this shop had been around when I got my first job wine selling in college. If you come in and aren't sure where to start, Clay will start you on what's new in his collection, otherwise he will cater to your tastes and curiosity. I've been exploring French varietals on my last two visits in, as I'm trying to develop more of a taste for them. The Loire Valley will welcome me one day, maybe when I retire, but until then, I can get imported choices right here in the Foothills. As a bonus, he has patience for select tipsy relatives that may or may not belong to you. Not naming names. They have a partnership with La Fornaretta two doors down, which is also paired in creative, exciting ways with their wine club membership at all levels. Additionally, anyone can come in and buy a bottle from the Newcastle Wine Shoppe and open it during dinner at La Fornaretta without paying a corkage fee, no matter if you are wine club members or not. I cannot stress enough how unique and friendly the vibe is at this shop. If you are in the area, definitely stop in! They are located right there on Main Street, can't miss them. There are adorable window kitties next door, and some pretty cool people at Monsters of Massage as well. I'm not saying make a day of it, butttt you could make a day of it...

Walking into this wine shop you will notice a selection of wines, which are hand selected, on beautiful wood shelving that brings a warmth to the space. After talking with Clay you'll also discover that his wines have personal value to him through his family and friends. He presents a tasting that takes you on a journey through the history of where, who and what was involved in each bottle. It is a very personable and informal experience for anyone passing through or living near the town of Newcastle.

Give it up for vintage Playboys!…read more Ok. I came in for the booze selection, not these, but it was cool seeing this piece of American history pretty well preserved with each piece on sale for $4.99 each. On to the booze. If you're looking for the garden variety goods, they've got it in spades. The selection was a bit broader than I had anticipated, in a good way. We found some nice ranges from the bigger distillers and behind the counter we spotted a handful of semi-allocated bottles, like Dickel Bottled In Bond and Nikka Coffey Grain, but nothing crazy. Staff wasn't too helpful and the store was a old, tired, and a little disheveled, but that's not important when you know what you're after. The part I didn't love was the lack of COVID compliance here. I understand everyone has their views but I'd like to be part of the solution and do what I can to help. I didn't observe staff in masks or any other protocols in place. To each their own, but it did put me off quite a bit. All in all, just your neighborhood liquor store!

Avery Tweak was my sheer delight here. I had it at Avery in 2017, then found it again in Massachusetts in 2018. Have not been lucky enough to find it in the Bay Area. So when I saw two bottles on the shelf, I scooped them up. I also love the Abyss aged in brandy barrels... there aren't enough Stouts aged in Brandy barrels, in my humble opinion. Various and sundry other things were interesting, and then of course you can't go wrong with Evil Twin. Each of us got two Evil Twin selections. I'd love to say that we purchased all of these in preparation for our July 4th celebration, but the reality is that our friends are more IPA and hard liquor drinkers. That's OK - these will not go to waste. Thank you once again, Long's, for a great experience and some new discoveries. We won't forget you exist again!

Long’s Bottle Shop - Today's catch. Each of us chose 9. Hubby's 6-pak of all one kind seems like a waste to me. But he did get the vodka too.
