Me & my bf booked a couples massage online without seeing the place and had SUCH a strange experience. We immediately got a weird vibe, nobody spoke English so it was hard to communicate, they absolutely dunked us in hot oil and gave us the most painful non relaxing massage you can imagine. We bought a gift certificate from this place and after a while our friends went to use it but oh surprise!!!!! they said they couldn't use it because the businesses move to another place and they gave us the phone number of the "new place" in Saugus. We called to Judy or Susy the manager (which initially was the name they gave us) and also we went to the spa and they said they wouldn't do that and that is because the newbury place has changed owner many time but honestly that is not the customer problem as the spa has the same name, same people, same everything. I've gotten over 50 massages in my life in various countries and I confidently say this is the worst massage spa I've ever been to. My appointment was at 3. When. Arrived, the masseuse told me to call the boss and reschedule, even though I explained I was already scheduled in at 3. Turns out they overbooked, so I had to come back later. Sure, no problem, I did just that. Once we arrive for our couples massage, we get into beds that have SOAKING WET blankets. Seems like they pulled it out of the dryers too quickly. The massage starts and all you hear for the next 45 minutes is loud noises and banging outside, people talking, and the door to our room opened 6x during the 45 minutes. My fiancé masseuse kept blowing snot from his nose and leaving in and out of the room loudly. We didn't hear him wash his hand once after loudly blowing his noise 6x. *It should be noted that we paid for a 60 min massage, and they cut it down to 45 even though they took us in an hour late as is. This 45 mins was cut down even shorter for my fiancé since his masseuse kept leaving the room. As for the massage itself, there was no massage technique used. They were simply using their knuckled to slide all over, which ended up being painful. My body was sore and tender and hurt for hours afterwards. I was tempted to get up and walk out at one point because of how undertrained the masseuse was, rubbing and hitting me but not actually using massage techniques to give a massage. Ultimately, I should've tipped $0 considering they took us in an hour late, were unhygienic, loud, and had horrible technique. I felt bad so I ended up leaving a 18% tip, to which the masseuses had the audacity to yell at me for it. Should've taken my tip back and left them with $0. This was such a grossly incompetent and unprofessional spa, especially for the price. Most importantly, they have NO COVID REGULATIONS. Should be reported to the city for this alone. The massage therapists are able to identify areas that I didn't even realize had tension and then target those trouble spots throughout the session. Please steer clear. I found them on Groupon, but before buying it, my husband and I decided to go check it out. We drove there and went inside. A handful of girls came out and we told them we were interested in a couple massage. There was a sign saying they didn't accept Groupon on weekends, so we just paid the $130. She's immediately shooed us off to a room. I asked to use the restroom first. The toilet was full of feces and the bathroom was dirty. I immediately got a weird vibe and didn't want to be there. I went into the room and my husband was already undressed. He said that they told him to keep his undies on. Weird, but okay. I got undressed and laid down on their uncomfortable pink sheets. The ladies came in and the one I had pulled the sheet up high on me while my face was peeking out the hole and starting rubbing me OVER the sheet. This lasted a few minutes and it was very uncomfortable. I finally spoke up and asked if they did the whole massage over the sheets. The two girls talked to one another trying to figure out what I was saying as they didn't speak English. I told my husband I wanted to leave. I have had many massages and never had an experience like this. I asked them if there was anyone I could speak to that spoke English and eventually they left the room and had another girl come in. I told her I was very uncomfortable and this was a weird massage. Then the girl that was massaging me came in with a phone she gave to me. It must've been her boss. She gave me the phone and she asked if I wanted a different girl and I said I just wanted to go. Then she asked me if I could give the phone back and I was naked and in the middle of getting dressed and told her this, but she didn't understand and kept asking for me to give the phone back. We got dressed, went out of the room and they handed my my money, thankfully, and we high tailed it out of there. Phew. Never again. What a weird experience. Three friends and I booked the 60 minute deep tissue/hot stone massage for a half marathon healing session. We came in with painfully creaky legs and left with rejuvenated bodies. The massages were critical to our quick recoveries - so necessary and amazing! This is a no frills, budget massage. You are here to heal, not for the aesthetics. Deep tissue will be painful, but in that oh-so-good, deep stretch kind of pain. Also as an athlete, I personally love deep tissue. My friends and I speak Mandarin Chinese semi fluently to fluently, through which we established rapport with our therapists and communicated our post-race massage needs. We received generous attention to our hamstrings and calves, but received little to our quads. This was disappointing in contrast to the extensive time that was spent on our backs. That being said, one of my friends commented that his back was finally knot-free (we're climbers so this is a big deal!) In sum, anywhere the therapists were attentive to was relaxed wondrously, so be vocal about where your target areas are! Objectively, massage practices here could use better time management and standardization (e.g. region focus described above). In another example, I received both hot stone on my back and my legs, and my friend who was in the room with me only received it on her back. Otherwise, the Newbury Spa staff was incredibly accommodating for a last minute time change, and in general very warm and friendly. Four stars to Newbury Spa for their value. They put our post-race bodies together and all four of us felt incredible after. Yes, things could be more standardized, things could be more aesthetically pleasing - but at this price point, these are things you can do without. We'll definitely be back! I made an appointment for my son for Tuesday July 28th at 3pm, I was going to meet my son at 4pm to pay and pick him up from the reservation I called and confirmed for, becahe graduates this week and it was a present, but when he arrived at 3pm, no one answered the door or picked up the 8 phone calls I made to this so called establishment, on top of that my sons phone died so I received a text "dad no one is here, my phone is going to die, I'll just sit at this spot for an hour so you can find me and pick me up". I finally got a hold of a lady who only gave me excuses. I held off making a negative reviews because of covid-19 but this place gave me no choice. Since when do we ask for a tip before the service is performed? And when is it mandatory to tip? I called and asked to use a Groupon, they wanted to be sneaky and accept the Groupon amount but ask that I pay them directly. They then charged $10 to use a card (pretty high for a card charge)--their reasoning was that there would be a $5 charge to use the card. This is reasonable but then they wanted to charge $5 for each person although it was one card. They then proceeded to ask me to pay for the tip (BEFORE the service). I had cash for a tip but the customer service was so poor, rude and the massage itself lack luster. I didn't feel I needed to tip. I still paid $122 for the couple massage. Its not like it was free. Treat customers coming in like they will have a relaxing spa experience, not like ATMs. No water was offered even. Not a spa I'd recommend. Also, I lived in China for 8 years and had massages biweekly at different locations. False advertisement, this is not holistic Chinese practices. My butt seriously hurts in a good way after this deep tissue massage. If you want a nice relaxing spa massage this place is not for you. But if you want your therapist to go deeply in your body ito fix all those kinks and knots in your muscles, this is your place. No pain no gain..My therapist was a really nice guy named Michael who have been doing therapy for about 7 years. He definitely knows the muscle groups and because I practice yoga he was able to say that I had good shoulder muscles and recognized my tightness in the lower back and the gluteus maximus and he really work that out and it was quite painful. I needed this type of massage because they started to get cramps in the middle of the night from working out too much. There is a slight language barrier so Michael kept saying that my gluteus maximus and hip muscles were terrible and the horrible...lol... He kept saying over and over again but I think he really genuinely wanted to fix me and even offered a tennis ball to give me to bring back home so I could work out the Kinks at home lying on a ball... Seriously too funny! Also he told me I was doing a good job with the pain and he did apologize for it but he said most people scream and cry but I handle the pain quite well... That's yoga for you... Breathing through every painful touch. Like I said come here if you have a real muscle knot and be prepared to scream and cry... I can handle it... can you? She comes out saying they're just too busy right now so it'll just have to be after 6pm (that could be 6:05, 7, 8 for all I know). The other guy in the waiting room asked her if he could have his money back since they were going to make him wait 4 hours for his appointment. She gives him their business card and asks him to call the number (even though the phone is right there). He calls, the phone literally rings in front of us and some other lady picks up who agrees to give him his money back (he bought the exact same Groupon voucher as me). When i call and ask for the same she completely refuses saying I'll just have to wait until after 6pm or come back another day. Obviously at this point, I've lost all trust in these people because they can't keep their word and were so rude I no longer felt comfortable receiving a massage from them. I insist she gives me my money back because she quite literally just gave it back to the other guy for the same exact reason (booking him incorrectly, making him wait) and she still refuses. I tell them it's unprofessional and I'm going to leave a bad review and she said to do it (so here I am). After some more back and forth, she hangs the phone up on me. 5:35pm comes around, still no one in sight. They're no longer answering my calls. The masseuse put absolutely NO pressure into the massage despite me saying that I wanted medium to strong pressure. I get that you don't want to put strain on your hands, fine, but if you're not willing to do the work, find another job. Truly pathetic. Oh and the hot stones are completely useless and just another way for this masseuse to avoid using her hands to do the massage. Buyer Beware - this was the WORST MASSAGE I ever had! I challenge this business to show their license/credentials (I don't think they're licensed masseuses). I think they're rated high because their "friends and family" posted good reviews or they're paying someone. The male masseuse didn't speak very good English and did not give me my full hour. I told him when he started that I had lower back issues and leg swelling so he had to be careful. He wasn't. He put so much pressure on my legs that I nearly jumped off the table. I told him he was pressing too hard - he said okay then continued. I ended up getting a bad cramp and told him; he stepped back and said "okay". He did nothing. There was no background music except for outside in hallway which you could hear and when his associate returned, he spoke to her through the door while giving me my massage and then left the room to speak with her. I thought that was extremely rude. At one point, a couple came in for their "2 pm" appointment (apparently nobody at reception) and he left me again to greet them; they indicated why they were there and told them they're early - to come back. They were early but his demeanor wasn't pleasant. They put a very thin sheet on you and use paper that are on the tables at doctors' offices. The hot stones were useless; he went up and down my back then legs for a total of 2-3 minutes - not what I expected. At the end they slapped my legs and arms then went to my legs and proceeded to lift them then drop them repeatedly. I never had a masseuse do this - found it very odd. While lying on the table I kept saying "can't wait for this to be over". I was not going to leave tip (and I've never done that) but felt pressure to give tip. He asked me if I needed change and I told him not now. He proceeded to wait then asked me again. I'm assuming that he's not being tipped for his poor service. I have been getting massages for years and I typically go monthly to a placed called Thai wellness but decided to give Newbury spa a chance since we saw there was a "deal" on Groupon for $127 for a couples massage. Our appointment was made for Saturday at 12 PM and when we got there the lady was scrambling to find our appointment and minutes later, nonchalantly told us to come back at 1 PM. We went back-and-forth for minutes trying to explain that we made our appointment and although she acknowledged that we had an appointment, she said they were short staffed but we didn't understand why we didn't get a phone call prior to us getting there. We had lunch reservations at 1:30 so 1 PM would not have worked for us but the language barrier did not allow us to reschedule to a different time so to make things easier we just told them we would come back. We ended up canceling our lunch reservation and had to kill time by walking around Newbury Street. When we finally did come back we noticed that there was a couples massage special posted on their wall for $120; so much for a deal on Groupon! I am giving them two stars because their massage was pretty good but the towels on the bed smelled funky and they didn't give us the full hour - we got in a little after 1 and they were done by 1:50. Wow! Newbury Spa delivers a celestial deep tissue massage. The inside was clean, modern, and had relaxing ambient piano playing on the music player. My girlfriend and I got an hour couples deep tissue massage at a bargain through Groupon. The front desk woman was very polite and escorted us to our rooms. My therapist used the perfect amount of pressure and provided an excellent massage. In the middle of the massage she left the room and came back with hot stones.... Everyone was very nice but it is a very poorly run business accompanied with a lack of masseuse skill. Main points they should improve on: 1) The rooms are separated by divider walls so you can hear everything! a) I could get over this if they enforced for the employees and clients to keep the noise level to a minimum. But they do not. I was overhearing a couple in the next room talking about a "facebook post" :(. I asked my masseuse to ask them to keep it down as they were being very loud but the masseuse just apologized and said "its because of the walls". Bad service. My fiancé and I went to get a massage on Valentine's Day and after our couples massage the two masseuse demanded that we pay $10 each for a tip. They did not allow us to offer them a tip. They said most people tipped $20 per masseuse so we must at least tip $10 each. Although there is nothing wrong with wanting a tip to demand a tip is a rude practice. Also they demanded that we pay in cash saying that the only way to get the Groupon price was to pay in cash. I went to get a couples massage last night with my boyfriend and we both left feeling brand new. There was a slight delay at check-in and they apologized right away about it. The staff took amazing care of us and they were able to pin point exactly where we needed the most relief and were kind, and they both periodically checked in to make sure we were comfortable. My back and shoulders have never felt so good post-massage as when I came here. There is a bit of a language barrier so it's hard to request certain spots to focus on, but he seemed to figure it out by where most of my knots were, and he got rid of knots I didn't even know I had.
