Great atmosphere! Would totally recommend for people who want a place to study or sit back, relax and read a book. It has a wide array of books for every type of reader. Not to mention their teens and children's areas that are perfect for all age groups. The library especially is spacious and virtually meant for young children who want to roam around. Also for all the comic book lovers and enthusiasts, this library provides an enormous collection of comics with the likes of Garfield and Spider-Man from Marvel. What if you want to just borrow a movie to watch? Well, this library has a gigantic section full of movies! With fan-favorites such as the Tatanic and The Mask of Zorro to Batman Begins and Mary Poppins, this place has it all! All in all, it was a good visit and I enjoyed hanging out and relaxing with a book in one of the comfortable lounging chairs and also walking around to see what all this library has to offer. Adj: Fancier library that's Family-friendly and Fun Continuing on our quest to visit as many libraries as we can when taking little trips throughout CA (or anywhere), let's visit the Newark Library! Located not far from the border of Newark and Fremont, just southwest of 880 & Hwy 84, this library is centrally located for those living in this part of South Bay. It's right next to the City Hall and Police HQ of Newark, so it's one of several important civic buildings in the little city. The building itself looked impressive and quite new. I forgot to look at when it was built, but according to the City of Newark's website, "On August 8, 2019, the City of Newark held the groundbreaking and dedication ceremony for the new Civic Center Plaza, home to the David W. Smith City Hall, the Alan L. Nagy Library, and a new Police Station." It was then built and dedicated in May 2022. So the library is only about 4 years old even though two other libraries preceded this new one. We came on a Sunday afternoon and was glad that we've discovered another library that's open on Sundays! First, we checked out the downstairs which is consists of the lobby area with friends of the library books on sale (all the time it seems), several bathrooms, an information desk with librarians on duty, and the children's section towards the back. Then we went upstairs and checked out the rest of the library. At the upper landing, there's some hang out lounge and reading chairs that swivel, then there's the teen room on one side behind the glass doors and the Curiosity Shop opposite the teen place. Then there's a whole floor on book stacks for adults and against one side of this floor are floor to ceiling windows with a long row of narrow tables and chairs for reading and working on. They were fully occupied so apparently lots of locals like to read and work here on a Sunday afternoon. On the other side of the second floor is a little toddler/younger kids play area that looks to be very calm and chill, but colorful with lots of padded seating and furniture for littles. I didn't go into this area since I don't have tiny tots anymore, but it sure looked like a great place for little ones to crawl around and play in a safe and separated space. Overall, this is another example of a nicely built and thoughtfully designed library in the bay area that's architecturally impressive and aesthetically pleasing, with so much to offer the community, encouraging educational endeavors and championing literacy and the love of learning through reading for the youngest to the most experienced amongst us. read more

As someone who works best in different environments, I'm always on the lookout for new places to study/do work. The new updated Newark Public Library is a great option! Everything about the building feels new, and there's always people here - whether they're browsing books, doing work on their computers, or reading. The second floor has a long row of tables with an outlet for every seat - very convenient for doing work and sometimes it's nice to be surrounded by other people who are also doing work when you want to feel productive. Maybe that's just me. I will note that it does get cold on the second floor, so I would bring a sweater or something if you plan to do a longer session. I wish the hours were longer on the weekend. I was a voracious reader as a kid, and spent a lot of time in the library. Now that I have kids, I'm trying to instill a love of reading in them, too. I love that the city of Newark has invested in their library. The older library reminded me of my childhood, but this new one is beautiful. The staff is always so helpful, it's modern and clean, and books are nicely organized (and easy to search for). We visit about once a week to swap out books and my kids love the check in/check out process the most! Love our local library! read more

I live in Union City, but friends recommended that I go to the Newark Public Library .... And boy were they right!!!!! What an amazing experience! There's a large collection of books to read with loads of sunlight. The amenities are great, and will motivate any one of any age to read/study and get ahead in life! It's also a vibrant community with events regularly. I was able to browse the app, reserve the titles I was interested in and the pick-up process was so easy with the self-service kiosks (available at all Alameda county libraries). The parking, location, and overall look of the library is great. The parking lot is shared with the City Hall building and Police building. The library itself is small. The bottom floor is the kids area with a few 4 seater tables that have plug ins. They also have a small section with 6 computers for use. I've noticed the kids are free to play and be loud as they want so keep that in mind if you choose to sit there. There's a playground right across the street to for parents who are interested. The upstairs has a few single tables no outlets. Bar style seating in the back. Great lighting all around. The negative is that the staff do not clean. The bathrooms seem like they don't get cleaned until the end of the day or next. There are food stains, drink stains, just nasty stuff overall on surfaces so bring cleaning wipes!!!!! Check before you sit on any chairs. Hopefully the community can be more respectful because it really is a great library read more

I love bringing my daughter here- they have a great selection of children's books, specifically graphic novels, which she has been especially enjoying recently. The entire first floor is dedicated to children's books. They even have a separate room with additional children's books, where they frequently have story time. All other books are kept upstairs. This is a nice, brand new library with tons of windows for natural light. All staff here are super friendly and always very helpful as needed. This is a wonderful library. We enjoy it with our baby with all kinds of events.. they have live music, they have kids programs for all ages, and lots of worldly culture programs. Our favorite was the Hispanic heritage mini food festival! They had one for different Palestinian art and everything olives. read more

I went tonight on my way back from work to find a few books to read to my students for this week, and I was thrilled to see the new library! :) I think it would be best to look online for certain books since I had a hard time looking around since I was trying to go home soon. I see the holds section at the front which is so convenient. So I will try that for my next visit-- to look for certain books online to place on hold & then pick it up instead of browsing & browsing cause I don't have time for that, sugar. This was my first time at the new Newark Library, and I'm impressed by how modern it is compared to the old location! Ample seating and plugs for studying or hanging out. Their website also lists a lot of neat events such as English Conversations, Reptile with the Vivarium, and Book Discussion Group to name a few. Thank you, Ruth, Guy, and Irene for putting together an excellent event on vegetable seed starting. We also got to take home some basil, orange bell peppers, seeds, and books. My husband and I had a great morning learning about: - how to start seeds - traditional vs new ways of repotting seedlings - tips and options for tools to help with potting - growing patterns of different vegetables - differences between soil types These events are a great opportunity for a third place to get to know others in the community. We had a delightful conversation about Indian mangos after the event. I'm looking forward to the next Gardening Series on composting and vermicomposting. read more

Super new library, nicest amongst all those I've been to in the Tri-City area. You can reserve study rooms for a few hours, which are very large for multiple people with a large whiteboard. Overall, there's lots of space, soft comfy seats, and it's really quiet! All the furniture is new and there's plenty of outlet to charge your computer. One of the best places where you can get a lot of work done. There are also designated teens and children's areas, which is nice. read more

I love a good library and this brand spankin' new Newark library is no exception. From the outside, it's beautiful. On the inside, it's beautiful! I'll admit, I had never been to the old library before and I got confused because that one shares a parking lot with the new one. Almost went to the old one! The new library is bright and clean with two levels of books, activity rooms, and private workspaces. It does have less areas for working on your own in the common areas. When I went there on a Tuesday mid afternoon, most spaces near the outlets were taken. There's lots of tables if you don't mind sharing space with someone else. I love their shelf of books for sale right up front. I got 3 hard cover past book of the month fiction books for $5 - quite a steal considering the book of the month subscription is like $15 per month and you only get one book. This library is the embodiment of why we cannot have nice things. The building is new , no more than a couple years old, and it's already so gross and trashy. There was trash and bits of food and crumbs in the study room and the bathroom was disgusting, I don't know if it was vomit or poop but it's one thing to have it splattered on the toilet bowl, but they left drops across the floor as well. There was also used toilet paper just sitting on the side, no attempt to throw it away properly. On top of that there are of course misbehaving loud children running around, I was in the study room and this child comes up and just bangs on the door and runs away like a prank. PARENTS BE BETTER, WHY ARE YOU REPRODUCING MORE FILTHY HEATHENS? People have no respect for anything. read more

This library is still pretty new! it is right across the old library. It is located right next to the new police station and the city hall. There are lots parking space. Opens at 10am-5pm and close every Fridays. Inside the library is clean and the furnitures all look modern and new. The bathrooms could be a a little cleaner. Also, i don't think there is a specific area for children/kids because it gets pretty loud here... kids running around and screaming and playing tag in between aisles. I only seen the workers downstairs and don't see any on the second floor to try to control the noise levels. Overall this library is great for studying. read more

Even though Newark library is relatively small, the Alameda county library system is able to have books sent between locations. So from home, I'm able to request a book located elsewhere and have it sent to Newark, where they can put it on a shelf with a slip of paper with my name on it. So my library visit to pick up a book involved going to a rolling bookshelf, locating my name, then taking that book to a self check-out station. In terms of picking up a book without having to peruse the shelves, this Tri-City (Alameda County) system was/is great. read more

Most of the reviews are for the old Newark library, highly recommend you checkout the new Newark library if you live in the area! It's a great addition to the city of Newark. Probably one of the newest establishments in the neighborhood. Basically looks like a smaller version of the new Hayward library - modern, high ceilings, very bright (almost too bright wish they had some window coverings or shades for the study rooms). There is a limited selection of books but if you navigate on the library's website you can always have a book you're interested in sent to this library location. This is a great place for kids they have a nice dedicated space for children's books. Lots of study space whether you're able to book a room or if you just find a table and a chair in the main area (smaller tables spaced apart from each other allow for more individual/2 people workspaces). Went here today and a good number of adults working away on their laptops or studying! Will definitely be back! read more

Decent hours - I stop by after work at least once a week to peruse the shelves for interesting books and DVDs and to pick up my requested holds. Quiet - Except for a few naughty kids running around, ignoring the librarian's requests for them to stop. Lighting - Terribly dim lighting makes reading a strain in the butt. Self check-out kiosks - Generally out of paper, so you'll need to stick a post-it note to the cover to prevent overdue fees and check your account online to avoid delinquencies on items that might have literally strayed from your library pile. Parking - Front of library parking shared with the small adjacent park/playground, plus additional parking on the side. The parking spaces are wider than the ones at Fremont Main. No need to dent any doors here. Wi-Fi internet - It's not the fastest...but at least it's free :) Hello free Wi-Fi zone! Quilting club - For getting arts and crafty with grannies. Crowds - Less busy than Fremont Main. No lines for self check-out. No circling around for parking. No stalking the tables and desks for a spot near an electrical outlet. Sometimes it feels like I have the whole place to myself. :) Librarians - Every time I've been there, they are busy chatting with each other or attending to their tasks. This is a great little library in the town of Newark, granted, I haven't been to the other libraries in the Fremont/Newark/Union City area, except for the Fremont Main Library. It has a nice area for babies, tots, and kids. There's a table with 4 tablets with educational games for those under 5 yo and 2 computers near the study tables in the kids area. There's a nice selection of board books, books for toddlers and kids learning to read. Also, their video selection for kids is pretty good with up-to-date entertainment and educational DVDs. There's small table with wood puzzles and bead mazes. There's also a small potty for kids. I haven't really ventured in the other areas of the library. I've used their website to check out e-books and to also request books. Their website is not exactly the most user friendly to find e-books and has limited selection. A huge plus is the playground next to the library. Plenty of parking. read more

I can't even begin to tell you how much I appreciate the extra help that I got from Jennifer and Joe today. My printer was not working at home and I came by the library to get some printing done. Jennifer help me immensely to find the correct things that I needed, how to use the laptop, and how to get things printed. When I hit a jam on how to print with their laptop here, Joe was there to explain everything to me. Having an extremely helpful staff means a lot and I really appreciate it. I hope that gets seen by administration and they know that these two individuals are great examples of customer service here. read more

I came here with my family about 2 weeks ago. I haven't been in a library for a very long time but my husband and kids are regulars here. When we walked in, the place was quite noisy. I thought libraries were supposed to be quiet? While my husband and kids went to kid's section, I went to the cookbook section. There isn't much choices in terms of selection but it's enough for a small city. In terms of size, I actually thought the place was quite big from the ones I've been to. Parking is plentiful. I had contacted the front desk for volunteer opportunity for my son who is in elementary grade. Even though he is young and no opportunity was available, I was asked to give my contact details to be contacted later. I was contacted as soon as there was an opportunity. I really appreciate the Newark library staff to take such initiative to accommodate our need. I also had good experiences with other library volunteer opportunities that my kids were able to contribute towards the Newark community. This dimly lit library seems to be about average compared to other libraries in the area: Decent selection of books Small parking lot Park next door Good signage so you can find what you need quickly Free wifi even if the library is closed There are several negatives, on the other hand: Opening and closing hours are not consistent day to day. Some days they open at 10am, other days 1pm, closed on Mondays. On weekdays where they open at 10am, they close at 6pm, otherwise they close at 9pm. No natural lighting Hard to find. My gf is a librarian so I feel obligated to write a review for a library especially since no one has yet yelped about this institution. This is a relatively small library with limited amount of materials. Because of the small floor space, the library has a limited amount of dimly lit study cubes located in the back of the building. One good thing though is that the Newark library is usually less crowded than Fremont Main so it provides a more pleasant study environment. They have made technological improvements such as providing easy to use self check machines, Internet computer stations and wi-fi access. read more

This is a nice neighborhood library next to the city administration building and right beside a playground and park area. It is a bit quaint, but I know from being a member of the Newark Chamber of Commerce business member, that there will be innovations and structural changes coming in the near future. Best library by far in the quad of libraries in the Fremont-Newark-Union City area. I will not go to any other library as this one seems to fit all of my needs. As an online graduate student, Starbucks and the like don't work for me. Newark Library has an immense set of resources and lots of study areas. The private study rooms are the perks to this location! They are clean, organized, and have friendly staff members willing to provide assistance and answer questions.
