There is normally a good selection at the Food Fair and Jamaican Independence festival (obviously), but not a lot else. Baileys has really stepped up to the mark. With a static location, gigantic steel BBQ and a gorgeous rich smell which fills The Square; they're on to a winner. Big props to Dave P. who alerted me to this gem of a stall a few weeks ago. I had been meaning to try it for a while, but after seeing Dave at our CMYE on Tuesday - it was agreed that Lunch WOULD happen. And it did. And it was sooooo good. With a reasonable selection of Caribbean favorites (Ackee and Saltfish, Rice and Pea etc) it was always clear what I was going to order. Jerk chicken. The godfather of all the chicken dishes. On a rainy Wednesday in Birmingham, it couldn't have been a better choice. It was clear on this particular day that Baileys were having some cooking issues, but we rocked up and were politely told that we COULD have Jerk, but not for 10 minutes. Not a problem for us (as they'd clearly just fired up the BBQ). It gave us a chance to go and mooch at the newest deliveries into Ignite Records in the Oasis (and for me to go and drool at the Hello Kitty merch on sale nearby). Within 10 minutes, we were back and ordering. I had Rice and pea, Jerk Chicken and a little bit of veg. For £6, it was a -very- reasonably sized portion. As an added bonus, Baileys also provides a small covered seating area (with a nifty Pacman decorated bench), so you can still enjoy some sunshine food in the pouring rain. I was mightily impressed with the level of spice, the sauce and the rich flavor of the Rice and Pea. I was so blown away, it was devoured in under 5 minutes. It was -THAT- good. Baileys could now become my "go-to" place for lunch on the run. Saying that, it strikes me that as the food is fresh you sometimes might have a bit of a wait. So... Go, give it a try. Instead Mgr came to our table accussing me of being rude. Humiliation of a paying guest - where is that in Customer Service Training? When took our mains order Supervisor who noted the booking (with mystery dog left me out!). At end I went to pay for our party of 6. Was about to pay served by a member of staff who looked like an adult at till. Gen Mgr pushed me away. No excuse me, sorry, she barked at me rudely."I don't want to talk to you". Shockingly rude! Have Chronic Pain, being touched pushed is painful. Kept interrupting my Convo staff member serving me. How was I to know she was underage, just the lovely young lady who took our order with a bottle of Champagne. If underage and don't want her interacting with customers why employ her to take orders of alcohol etc. I was tearful. Then cake cutting the Supervisor brought over the wrong cake! To be honest I was expecting a menu replete of very spiced ( which is always good), rich and heavy food but I was quite surprised that they have really healthy and light options as well. Obviously, some singular taste of caribbean such as Curried goat can also be found in their menu, but I really think it would be not a good idea before a night out! As this place is open almost ( if not) 24 hours on weekends, it's really is a good option at the city centre. I just tried one of their wraps to go, but I have to confess that their fish, rice and peas with beans sounds delicious. My best guess it that it's Dixy Fried Chicken, which seems to be a popular name for similar establishments, although I'm not entirely sure; for all I know, it could be Digbeth Fried Chicken (mmm, doesn't that sound appetising?). DFC functions as both a standard takeaway and, thanks to the ample seating inside, a sit in restaurant. I've tried out plenty of takeaways in Birmingham, but I've seen few shops as cheap as DFC, which has an extensive £1 menu, serving nuggets, donner burgers, chicken wings, and a number of other takeaway favourites, with chips, for just one quid. As you may very well expect, the food isn't exactly haute cuisine, but at that price, it's great value for money.

The food is tapas style but the portions are generous, so if you're hungry 2 plates will probably be enough (or go with a group like me and try a bit of everything!) Now I remember this place when it was The Bulls head and have many a good/boozy night in the upstairs room watching bands/djs over the years....I am happy to see they have kept that part of the venue as a live entertainment space and regularly have salsa/cuban bands playing on weekends. The downstairs of the venue has not changed too much either in fairness but now has a cuban theme with flags and a bit of paint job. Its pretty simple on design but it works. For the event hosting by Dine Birmingham we were given a background into the production of rum and its origins while tasting five different rums. There was also a live band playing in the downstairs area of the venue which was a nice touch. To soak up some of the rum we were give half time snacks of patatas bravas and a bean stew, both were really tasty and have probably helped me not feel terrible today! Great event, great venue and lovely to meet lots of new people. Ill be back.
