The Seaway Fish Bar took away my chippy cherry!
I grew up with chippy, aged with the kind couple behind the counter and I desperately miss being a regular. At the age of 6 my cheekiness with the smiling lady started. My opening line was "Hi I'm Servette, can I have 37p's worth of chips please?" She'd chuckle to herself, take my coppers and hand me a cone of chips.
Since moving out I only visit here once a year, when some friends and I go to a fireworks display. It's become a ritual of ours to start at the Seaway - to line our stomachs - get pie and chips all round, eat out of the chippy paper on the way to the pub and prepare for the night ahead. I'm always excited when November 5th comes round - it's Seaway time! Lovely food at really good prices!
The menu is still traditional with jars of cockles and bottles of vinegar on sale and over the years they have incorporated lunchtime offers.
The smiling lady - whose name I've never known - and I, always ask after each other but I recognise the sadness in her eyes as I feel it in my own, that somehow 20 years has flown by.
How can the food still be so good after such a long time?
