History
Established in 1972.
The New Jersey Workshop for the Arts began in 1972 as "The Westfield Band-Orchestra-Chorus Summer Workshop." The summer cultural program was initiated by Dr. Ted Schlosberg, a music teacher with the Westfield Board of Education. Located at Westfield High School, the five week program began with instrumental and vocal music education with a student body of 100 and a faculty of 20. Designated a non-profit 501 (c) 3 corporation status in 1977, The Westfield Summer Workshop was a creative endeavor that eventually developed into the New Jersey Workshop for the Arts.
Throughout the years, NJWA has created various programs to enrich the lives of the community, such as The Music Connection, for special needs families; the Westfield Art Gallery, to display local artists' work; the Westfield Fencing Club, and more. In addition to music lessons, the Music Studio also offers opportunities for area musicians to play in its many bands, orchestras and ensembles.
